Well if you ain't ever going to marry and have a family, at least enjoy the wonders of sexual intercourse. For the moment I too don't plan on marrying, that's probably due to not having found that significant other half yet ...

The lips of a 3D mollusk shalt not touch my snake. Why have sexual intercourse when the right hand is just as good?!

Anyways... regarding the harem topic. I love 'em polygamists. O wait, wrong topic. I personally watch harems for the girls* and because I want to delude myself further.

Good stuff, but I guess there isn't too much of that. Being *forced* to watch all the other crap just for those few good moments, just isn't my thing.

Well, I watch them because they're amusing and on the off-chance there will actually be some type of romantic resolution and a choice made by the MC. My favorites are the type that mix harem with the action genre though, such as Sekirei or Negima.

A lot of harem animes tend to have comedy in their genres too. So that also appeals to fans.

Sometimes I feel like I have to force myself to watching the first half of the series to actually get to the real plot. In most harems I've watched, the beginning of the anime is usually pointless.

Well I like a few harems. Love Hina especially, but the manga is 100 times better than the anime. It's also same series that I discovered who my dream girl would be...Mutsumi!

While harems are overrated and sexist, how is it that several titles throughout the past few years (Rosario, Sora no Oto, etc.) still get a lot of fan appeal? I can see the comedy aspects/story/fan service certainly do add to the mix but what else?

Most harem shows, standard or reverse, are comedies at their very heart. That is their primary appeal. Even Shakespeare used themes common to harem shows: lovers who are perfect for one another but don't realize it, unrequited love, and even tsunderes. (Any anime fan that has seen or read The Taming of the Shrew should recognize Catherine as a classic tsundere!) Not to mention the classic mistaken identity romantic comedy, which Shakespeare was oh so fond of using! He even used women pretending to be men in some of his stories.

I personally like a good harem anime, as long as it has plot progression. They can be fun for a few episodes without it, but there needs to be an overarching plot that leads to romance, not just a bunch of girls and one guy, or vice versa. I have yet to see Love Hina, but from what I understand it is a classic of the genre. Many people consider my favorite anime of all time, Ah My Goddess, to be harem, though it is more of a straight romance, since there is never any doubt that Belldandy and Keiichi are "the couple". There are many other goddesses, and they frequently end up having a fondness for Keiichi, but there is never any doubt about who is in love with him.

I have to ask why you included Sora no Oto, presuming that you mean Sora no Woto (so ra no wo to, Sound of the Sky)? That is not harem in the least! There is no guy! It is a slice of life, distopian future, SF story. No harem qualities at all... Moe? Yes. Harem? No!

Because people love shitty anime shows. The weak male represents the anime viewers and the girls are their distant dreams. Since the lead is a weakling with no spine at all, many find it easy to see themselves within the lead. Seeing as they feel similar to the lead, they can pretend that they are super popular with all the anime girls.

A different example could be tsundere. Why on earth would you find a tsundere attractive because of her personality? Calling a tsundere's behaviour "moe" is just silly. Imagine trying to be together with a person who constantly denies everything she likes about you, because it is "embarrassing" or something equally silly.

I can understand being embarrassed, but to the extend that you say you hate the person you actually love - or punching/kicking them? Get out of here. Fans of this anime stereotype probably can't see beyond the "moe" part, and just look at the shallow parts of it.

I think the first sentence I made bold pretty much says it all.

I don't know... not all harem is shitty. Some definitely is, but that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy how silly it is. Something similar would be girls going crazy over the Twilight book and movies, they are written poorly and the movies are bad, but girls still go gaga over it.

Some decent harems in my opinion would definitely Clannad, and Tenchi Muyo (awesome).

I personally like most Harem anime but I think it is very important to distinguish the different types. In my mind there are 2 main types of Harem anime, Ones designed to be comedies such as Sora no Otoshimono, Seitokai no Ichizon, and Kore wa Zombie desu ka, and ones that are designed to be romances like Clannad, Myself Yourslef, and Hoshizora E Kakaru Hashi.
To me these 2 types are so different that I don't even compare them to each other because they are both trying to do very different things.

I watch the comedy ones with no expectation of lasting romance at all because I know that in the end the MC will get close to the Main Girl but then something will happen at the very end to put him back at square one. I will only ever watch them if I want to watch a simple comedy that is good for a few short laughs but won't leave any lasting impression.

When I watch the ones that are designed as romances however I have a totally different mindset. I have watched enough romantic harems that I pretty much always know what will next because almost all of them do the same thing. The MC will meet all the girls and usually the Main Girl will be the first and even if she isn't you will know how she is just from the OP. They will start off well then either something will happen to put them apart (Sola) or the MC will go and deal with all the other girls problems (Kanon). Then the MC and MG will get back together again and every one will be happy. I personally like to watch these ones because I know how it will go and it will at least have a solid conclusion, however I will never watch 2 back to back because then it's just to much so I try to stagger them around.

The only true Harem anime that I have watched or can think of off the top of my head where you don't know who the Main Girl is and the MC does pick one at the end would be Shuffle! and it remains as one of my favorites because of that

Harems don't bother me. It's fantasy. If you don't like that particular fantasy, then don't watch it. I saw where Rosario + Vamp was mentioned. I watched the first one. Though well enough of it to begin the 2nd. I forgot I was watching it and have never finished. I don't think the male is a weakling. I agree with Cecilthedarkknight. The male is usually a nice average guy. He's not particularly strong or handsome and that's the draw. There are psychological techniques used in advertising and persuasion that are used in entertainment. For most guys they want to be that "nice guy". They want to be the guy who gets to chose between all those women. For women the draw might be they want the chance at a good guy or they like the hope that one is out there. Personally, I don't give a damn. If it's funny and/or actiony and I like watching it, I'm gonna watch it. However I will admit that I wouldn't mind being Angelique in Neo-Angelique for a little while. Or are reverse harems not part of the discussion? (rhetorical)
