Personally, music tends to be something that helps me regulate my moods, for lack of a better way of describing it. When I'm in a bad mood, it acts as a catharsis. When I'm in a good mood, it helps keep me there. Different music for different moods, of course, but I love it all equally.
(Not that that's the only reason why I listen to music, but yeah, I'd say it's definitely a big part of why I do.)

You're close. We don't like to hear other people's opinions of life, we want to hear what we think. Which can probably explain all the diverging genres. And in very few cases do we listen to people we disagree with. Me it's more of a change to an attitude I didn't have but respected kind of thing.
...but yeah I agree with what some other people said let's get some less emo answers. not that I ever want to hear "the beat" again
