Okay to begin with I am assuming you mean "third world" as in under-developed or developing country. If that case, it'll take a lot more then a prolonged recession or even a depression to bust the US down from a developed country to one of the latter. In fact, I question if it is even possible since the economy is already "developed". Losing super power status does not equal losing "developed" status. Case in point, the United Kingdom. The UK lost the status of "superpower" to the US about a 120 years ago. But it is still a developed country.

Secondly, the concept of a "third world" country is actually a throw-back from the cold war era. Where US and its allies were considered the first world. The USSR and its allies the second world. Countries that were not allies of US or the USSR were considered the "third world". By that definition, it is still impossible for the US to be a third world country because the "first world" pretty much includes the US in its definition.

Also, if you think of the United States of America as an empire - then the first sign of its true decline/death would actually be states seceding and the federal government being unable to do anything to prevent states from seceding. When the US devolves into a bunch of independent nations (think the British empire starting to break-up), then you have something to worry about as the disparate between your states are great. So it would be inevitable that some states/newly independent nations, will find themselves being classed as "under developed" or "developing" while others will be fine and be classified as "developed". Somehow I don't see that happening.

Those who say America is a third world country fail to understand the reasons that "third world countries" are less wealthy.

America will not become a third world country. It is a strong possibility that America will eventually be surpassed as the world's richest country. However, as long as America's companies, universities, and government continue to offer things that cannot be found anywhere else, America is a long way from the "third world."

Our companies may no longer dominate the world economy, but we still have by far the greatest share per capita of the international economy. Our elementary, middle and high schools are not competitive, but our universities continue to be world-renowned. Our government guarantees the security of half the world and the other half is typically on good terms even when they are rivals. (E.g., China, which keeps trying to make nice with the USA even when they provoke Japan or South Korea, as has happened repeatedly in the past year.)

If there is another "superpower," that replaces the US as the strongest country it will most likely be China. However, they have major problems with demographics. Because of their one-child policy, in a few decades they will have a disproportionately older population. Then it will start shrinking. Not the firmest of foundations for a would-be superpower.

I am hoping that we do not see a repeat of the cycle of "superpowers." A future is possible, maybe even likely, where no single country is able to tilt the system so strongly in its favor.

America is already in a crisis. (correct me if wrong?)

Japan's economy has been stagnant for the last 20 years. They're more likely to go down rather than up over the next half century.

*is hoping the last 2012 post is ironic*

Guys, don't be like this. Well I guess I'll say I view this more optimistically, or at least less cynically then most previous posts I read.

But I like the question of when it will happen. I don't like the "super power" idea much at all. I guess I first took notice of it reading the kodocha manga when I was younger. There's a scene where a character asks another for an English dictionary because they have that class next. I was puzzled so I asked my dad and found out most countries learn English in school. I could fill in on my own that the US is a super power and countries had to rely on it for business. It made me sad.

But now I'm seeing the US current situation, not as in "we're in deep shit" but like "we're on a level playing field"

After all with the help of death note and engrish.com I learned English was the most popular language in the world. I follow a lot of Japanese indie punk bands too. Some like ELLEGARDEN and Radwimps have spent time in America. Others like GLORY HILL and SpecialThanks have hysterical engrish. But it's like wow there's this huge scene of bands singing in English cuz it's cool. And I really felt like I owed something to Takeshi Hosomi, so I wanted to sing in Japanese. But learning is hard.

But I dunno language is more united too. Now it's that if you live in America you'll probably be able to hold very simple conversations in Spanish (French for Canadians) and if you watch anime ,which westerners are more exposed to, you'll probably pick up the same amount of scattered words that Americans that didn't take high school Spanish do. We've got the internet so we can be everywhere instantly, and enough people knowing enough to associate things with culture to say like "oh that sounds German" and enough people interested in history and wanting to see the world. Someday I even promise we'll have an accepting media so bands that write songs in other languages get on the radio, like most of the world ...already has....grr. But yeah politics and world affairs can even things out behind the scenes for me.

Go level playing field!!

Japan as a superpower um they're not doing so hot either, they basically rely on trade, so if the world collapses so do they. China is probably most likely to get out alive in this situation, and in turn be on the same footing as the US in the end.

What are you talking about? Language has nothing to do with being a superpower. All you're pointing out is the spread of English throughout the world. If you're saying that because English is a predominant language, that in turn America is powerful, following that logic, wouldn't Great Britain be the most powerful country?

Do you know where the term Third World country came from?

Back during the cold war, the countries that were going through the decolonisation process (such as indonesia), decided they did not want to be part of capitalism or communism. which is why they called themself 3rd world countries.
It's just that most of these 3rd world countries aren't the richest countries at the moment. :x

Anyway, I think Asia will become the new superpower.

Alot of people think America is a superpower and take it as an example, while actually it's not the best example, give the state it's in.
Sure it might be fun to go there.
But nah, we give America too much credit..

This guy is informative. I support his resolve.
