I think it's different for each age range and personality type. If you're trying to get a friend into anime, you should try to pick an anime based on the non-anime things they like.

It's always a tricky business trying to suck someone into your hobbies. As much as you love something many people will just give you a weird look when you try and drop it on them.

For anime it's best to keep the other person's viewing habits in mind. For whatever kind of shows and movies he likes there is an anime to match it. So if you know the other person well enough you should be able to find something.

always best to start with something that has a Good English Dub though.

nothing spoils a show more than really bland voice acting and people who are new to anime generally don't like subtitles at first.

That'd be just the native English speakers. I would rather not watch a series than watch a dub (like Gundam 00 here on Crunchyroll). I find them offensively pointless and stupid.

@OP
The correct answer is Death Note. No, seriously, your friend likes "dark", twisted and mature stuff and then it turns out he found DN boring while really liking Hellsing? Nah. What he likes is cool violence. So, Samurai Champloo in addition to what you've already listed.

Full metal alchemist or code geass because they both are a full package, action, drama, fighting, life lessons. comedy, and they're dubbed and they get to the point without to many fillers

I think ouran or fullmetal alchemist might work. Fullmetal has some sci-fi that might makes sense to those the down-play anime.

I would say it all depends on what your friend or person likes when it comes to entertaiment. What genre movie or TV series they like.So you cant pick just one title.

to be continued

I vote for Code Geass as well. It's a combination of Death Note and Gundam. who'd pass that up. although the second season was subpar, the first season is definitely one that will mesmerize viewers.

Anything that we might think is good that is less than 6 episodes long . . . (90 minutes or less)

Unfortunately that isn't much.

Gunsmith Cats
Denpa TekiNa Kanojo . . . . are the only two I can think of right now.

Showing people "good" or "great" anime isn't going to really do it.
For most people you are stuck with the way that anime stories are usually told, it takes too long, they loose interest.

If you could get people interested in a show and play it to them like any other series over a few weeks or something you might be able to change a few people's minds. Most people aren't interested in sitting around watching the same show all day.

Another thing is to play anime like music, sort of background noise at a party.

The other thing is that a lot of us fans are rather arrogant about anime . . . this is counterproductive.

Hmm, alot of nice tips.. He likes "dark", twisted and mature stuff, so gonna go on the seinen stuff ^^ Since he liked Hellsing, im gonna continue on the "bloody path" like Elfen Lied, Claymore and Berserk.

My first anime was Hunter x Hunter and I was in my early teenages so I loved it. But then my brother showed me Naruto which made me hooked but have since I grew up a little, taken a liking to more mature stuff :)

Hmm If that's his style let me suggest Death Note and Claymore
