I think if I were to show someone who hardly watches anime to show them how good it could be without being too much, would have to be Eden of the East. At least if I was thinking about recent series. It has a lot of elements that could attract those who aren't used to anime in general. There's enough material to keep the viewer intrigued, but also it has good enough production values and treatment that it doesn't feel like a cheap product.

If it was a girl I'd tell her about Lucky Star or Sailor Moon. And if it's a dude I'd tell him about DBZ or Cowboy Bebop. Full Metal Alchemist too.

Hayao Miyazaki's movies, Ghost in the shell(both movie and tv series), and Cowboy bebop. I guess it would really depend on the person though...

It really deppends on the persons taste.
When I got a friend into anime I showed him Slayers, but that only worked well since he likes fantasy and humor... and of course since Slayers is awesome.

Hmm, I have seen Cowboy Bebop to be the best representation to new comers of anime. Action, Drama, Comedy, and great music and something different. This anime is what really got me started.

I think it's best to choose something easy to understand or something that doesn't have too many Japanese elements that can throw someone off or confuse them. I showed my uncle the movie Summer wars and he loved it. Then we started watching a bunch of other anime together. I got my friend into anime by telling him to start with FMA, Death Note, And Soul Eater.

It really depends on the person and what he/she is interested in.
I personally suggested anime such as Serial Experiments Lain, Elfen Lied, Neon Genesis Evangelion , TTGL etc to my friends when I was trying to hook them up into the whole anime business thinggie just to prove that anime is not necessarily only for kids, it really depends on the type etc, the baka-heads wouldn't believe it before they watched those ^^..
But maybe it'd be good to start with someone more easy going like an interesting and not typical shounen or a shoujo / josei if the person is interested in romance x]

Eureka Seven is what did it for me.

A lot of animes are too weird for the average person who's not already an anime fan to get in to. But Eureka Seven is an interesting story with awesome visuals that's delivered in a fairly mature fashion. It's easy to get into whether you've seen a lot of anime or not. For exactly this reason, in it's review of the series, Crunchyroll called Eureka Seven the "gateway anime", and that's a pretty good term for it.

If ever there was a series to convert people to anime fandom, it's Eureka Seven.

I got absorbed into anime via Highschool of the Dead. I think the actiony ones like DBZ, Gurren Lagann and etc are the ones that can hook line and sink.
