It is difficult to make a statement like that when almost all of us are firmly entrenched in a society of some sort. My immediate thought upon reading the question, however, was that we should be wary of statements that imply absolute laws. What does "by nature" mean? Everyone, or most people? To say everyone would be foolish; there are always exceptions. But if it means most people, what about the exceptions? Are they not to be included in this conception of natural?

Group models often disregard individual differences for the sake of the "best understanding" of the subject, but it is very important to keep the exceptions in mind. Reality is so much more complex than the either/or systems we set up to organize it.

Besides, who decides what is natural and what isn't?

Well if you were asking men in general, I'd have to say yes considering the high divorce rate, but there are those out there that are well intentioned and DO only settle down with ONE woman.

well, based on logic, it would be our nature to spread our seed as much as possible. fortunately for our societal values, many of our instincts are pretty dull. Fore example, i dont think its very instinctive for a person to just sit somewhere pressing an array of buttons for hours on end, travelling a short distance of a few feet for food, with little to no effort (physically). This is, of course, a result of our intelligence.

Being born and raised in, and interacting in such a society as a fully-developed adult makes (almost) all of us willing to go for monogamy eventually. instincts aside, though, many men simply want sex, and some will never commit; whereas many, as it has been stated, have no problem with one woman ever. most men obviously fall in the middle area, which would make me ultimately say that men are not polygamous.

Yes, men are polygamous by nature. It's an instinct tats been around since the beginning of man. The reason: life was much more dangerous back then(cavemen: dinosaurs, animals; beginning of civilisation: disease, war, poverty, famines, etc) so the instinct to preserve the species was strong. Nowadays, tat danger has been reduced drastically so this is not so common anymore.

Nowadays, men still hav polygamous thoughts but are able to suppress them due to the safety of the present as explained above and also the fact tat the price to maintain the polygamy is extremely high(financially, emotionally and physically; yes, physically. Some women in polygamous marriages are brutal, to say the least.). Thus, tis polygamous nature is suppressed quite well.

i would argue that both men and women are polygamous (or rather, sexually promiscuous). if you think about it, if every man slept with every woman they can lay their penis in, then technically, the women is also polygamous (or sexually promiscuous) by nature as well. the gradual shift towards the view that men are polygamous and women are monogamous was due to the rise of private property, and the men controlling property (b/c they were hunters, and the first private property was food sources). this led to the decline of the value of women's gathering skill. as private property expanded into more than food, it gave the power to men (put men in the public sphere, and women in the domestic sphere). It also emphasized on women being monogamous b/c the men needed a male heir to their private property. so this differentiation of monogamy and polygamy is due to the rise of private property, and due to the man's need to control the woman's sexuality in order to ensure an heir to his property (need to control their sexuality and ensure their monogamous intentions b/c need to make sure the son is biologically his). so this monogamy/polygamy is not really innate, but rather a socially produced phenomenon.
hope that made sense, i didn't do too great of a job explaining it.

maybe, but that though have never came across my mind. o_o;

from what i see *note: I have never though of this till now nor have i studied this* the natural body of a men, allows the men to have more than one wife at a time and be able to coop with it. So in a sense, men are naturally made that way.

but mentally, I do not see why would a men need more than one wife; because there's really no good reason to get married other than for Love. and/or out of love. but yes, they're probably Polygamous by nature, but that nature have changed over the course of life. Now its against the law to have more than one wife in most parts of the world.

i think it has to do with our concience(not morality type). As we grew more developed we gained reason n logic at the cost of instinct. one example is fear of death(almost all people whether conciencly or not), being young forever, ...things like that. Another thing to what cb4sn13 said is that it is only half true. let me explain- In ancient Greece Spartan people had a customs unlike all other people did then that made them who they where what i call "self natural selection"-
1. KILL any weak babys right then and there(this is still goin on) 2. Boys that survived this where made to grown, able, strong and powerful men through years of brutal life of they survived that is. NO ONE WAS SPARED just like lions
now here is part of the interesting part- the women
The women had their own life like the men like lioness in a pride.
1. Womenly duties-u kno wat i mean like cooking, cleaning,.....
2. training-no kiddin. spartan women where known for the prowess in strength and skill in sports and combat(though not like the men) with strong bodies and will to match
3. Making stong children(in sparta this not wonderland as that may die first or die later in training-only hope for the best)
4. They did not have babies until their twenties almost unheard of in the ancient world(they usually marry in their early teens to an way older guy n have babies sooner than later). The spartans realized giving birth at an early age destorys the girls body and make her prone illness and death while making her give weak babies that die before reaching old age or 5, 10 for thast matter.
Now as from the third and fourth part comes the real intersting part- Women who married to older men or the gets older while the woman can make babiesd where not allowed but ENCOURAGED if they want to go look for young man(obviously survived training) and have sex with him(just sex) to have a healthy child that her husband would adopt as his own as long as the husband agrees and the younger man is in good condition, stature, relation.
So now comes the real thing- do you really think a woman would not go for a good mate to have a healthy strong child like the lioness that only allow other males in their pride if he strong be able to give good children? Do you really think that mankind has still the instinct that other animals have when it comes to mating? Or is it really in the times deem it necessary that comes like ancient times as now our standarrd has of living has increased? Are men and women polygomious or is just instinct trying to prevail over conciousness that gain at the expence of it so that we may survive better as species?
