Most of those things sound pretty weird, I wouldn't like that. But theres MUCH worse things that people do, and it's not even cultural. Like...worse...anyway, no more of that.

That Japanese hotel thing is true. I think it's one of those Capsule hotel thingies that has been introduced. For people who can't be bothered looking it up, it's basically what you see, a coffin looking thing, and inside theres a TV and some other things you may need, and that's your room. It's obviously not made for comfort or anything, but I hear the purpose of it is for business men and such.
As my Japanese teacher told us, a situation would be when a business man goes and gets drunk with his mates, and they're too drunk to get home, so they rent a "room" (capsule lol) and sleep in there for the night. These places also sell ties and stuff as well, AND they have shoe cleaners and whatevers so you can go straight to work and look like you didn't stay the night inside a capsule.

Doesn't actually look that bad ahaha

Stop quoting the first post, I don't want to look at it either.

i agree theres nothing wrong about thinging something is strange and I am sure we have practices that other cultures find strange. its not like you were being racist you were simply pointing out a practice found in another culture that you found strange. There is nothing wrong with finding something strange wether its in your culture or anothers as long as you arent hating or discriminating agianst a particular group of people because of it. Anyways sry about the long lecure crap lol i guess im just getting so sick of whiny people freaking out over every little thing like omg u have feelings noooooo shame on you lol.

I have never heard of the others but i have heard of the feet thing and oi it seems so painful lol

this isnt a custom i find strange but In my art history class we were talking about color and she mentioned that in India (i think africa too but im not sure) white is a funeral color which i thought was rather funny seeing as white is the wedding color in america .. pretty ironic lol

After a wedding when the husband and wife returned home, the woman would throw warm penny coins from the bedroom window on a shovel, the local children gathered below, would scramble to collect the coins.

This was practiced in York in the (20s/30s), does anyone know if this still happens anywhere today and where the tradition may have come from?

Cheers

yes. Women wrapped their feet to make them smaller because it was a believe that if your feet are too big and not nicely shaped, you can't marry to a good family. So basically, if your feet are like 3 inches long and have a nice triangle shape, no matter how ugly you are, you can marry to a rich man

No. You fucking retard. Women broke their toes, wrapped them UNDER their feet, and walked on them like that so they would have smaller feet, because it was considered an attraction in China well over a few hundred years ago.

Though of course a few of those dumbass Chink's do that shit still in some areas of China.

Why? Because Asians are fucked up like that.

well. who the fuck you think you are to judge Asians like that?

Don't hold such assumptions to be true. The customs of Asia have no more mystique, lengendary or unknown myths than Europeans like it to be. The practice of foot binding was done in China.

This does not refer to the entire Asian contingent. The term 'Asia' serves in people's imagination to package a nice idea in mind that it encompasses only chinese, indians, thai, etc. That's Southeast Asia. Generalizations often overlook the fact that there are more sub-islands and areas, states, provinces within the entire Asian boundary, and these places have their own tradition, beliefs, practices and ideas.

China has since developed, in terms of technology, economy and science. Even though their area is large, and not all of them have been fully urbanized,( a large percentage of rural areas still, actually) some of China's advances can be compared to and in other cases exceed the standards that of any other modern society. One can also take a look at the history from the past leading to the present to understand more about the so called 'weird customs'. This factor alone would dispell any notion that the entire country lives in their deluded sense of mystery and 'strange' practices, rather feet binding serves as a historical reminder of the Chinese imperial tradition, and it's now more of a scary idea even to the Chinese than it sounds to the outsiders.

Agreed. Orientalism serves to place the West and the East at odds, highlighting difference rather than similarity for the sake of, as you said, packaging. Organization. A system. Unfortunately, it's not as harmless as just a way to see the world, since governments and other powerful institutions have taken advantage of it (not to mention produced it) for their own ends.

That being said, it is by no means unusual for one to view the unknown as strange. Since "normal" is defined by experience, the unknown represents an aspect of reality that does not fit neatly into the perceiver's organization. We can think what we want, but the true test is whether we learn and grow from our meetings with difference.

I think bound feet started with the favourite concubine of a prince who had small feet. I remember my friend's grandmother telling me about it.

Yeah, white is the color of mourning for chinese too. I always wondered why the bride wore white.
