I tried asking about this in the "recommend me an anime" thread, but I never seem to get a response, so I'll just make a thread about it.

So...

Being curious and nerdy at the same time, I've taken an interest in religious satanism and occultism lately, and I wonder if there are any animes that deal with this subject.
More specificly, with things like devil worshipping, satanic rituals, summoning of demons, occultic altars, sacrifces or just use of occultic/religious symbolism in general.

I've searched a bit, and while I have found some cases of this, it always turns out to be hentai.
Bible Black is without a doubt the most famous case of this, and the anime itself is, as far as subject matter goes, pretty close to what I'm looking for. I just don't want the hentai parts.

Either that, or an anime that deals with the struggle between Christianity and practitioners of the dark arts.
Kind of like what I've gotten an impression of, watching the little I have of series like Chrono Crusade and Hellsing.

If you know anything, or have something else to add, please do.
Feel free to discuss as well.

Some of Go Nagai's manga/anime depict Satanists and occults. Demon Lord Dante sort of has what you're looking for,but
it depicts

Evangelion has a lot of Christian and some occult symbolism.
Blue Exorcist.

Thanks, I'll check them out. :)
I already know NGE, but I hate that anime, so I'm not watching it again.

Isn't that the series where the main character gains power by sucking a girl's tits?
Man, that is SO stupid! >_<

But hey, if you think it'll fit, I'll give it a shot, despite that.
I'll also check the other ones out. Thanks.

yes it has it there.. the religious symbolism of a child/mother with breast feeding, the holy virgin mary etc is there. I would recommend vampire series such a trinity blood, Full Metal Alchemist BH etc.

The image below is from umineko and what it means from the bible again read the visual novel just to give you heads up.

The Seventh and last Pentacle of the Sun.--If any be by chance imprisoned or detained in fetters of iron, at the presence of this Pentacle, which should be engraved in Gold on the day and hour of the Sun, he will be immediately delivered and set at liberty.

Note.--On the Arms of the Cross are written the Names of Chasan, Angel of Air; Arel, Angel of Fire; Phorlakh, Angel of Earth; and Taliahad, Angel of Water. Between the four Arms of the Cross are written the names of the four Rulers of the Elements: Ariel, Seraph, Tharshis, and Cherub. The versicle is from Psalm cxvi. 16, 17:--'Thou hast broken my bonds in sunder. I will offer unto thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the Name of IHVH.'

The only thing religious about Seikon no Qwaser is that they are searching for some vague power that would give the use the power of "god"

. Theres also the symbolism of Mary and the Baby Jesus, but thats really about it. Other than that, its just a goofy hentai anime.

All that said, I found SNQ to be really funny and entertaining... all the huge boobs were a bit over the top, but it was silly how all the girls ended up being sucked on at least once.

SNQ is so bad...

I'd recommend Blue Exorcist, Hellsing Ultimate, Chrono Crusade

I find that entire series to be entertaining where boobs actually play a role in the storyline. In other words, they have to show it (except on censored networks) because it's part of the story.

O, Toaru Majutsu no Index also has alot of religion theme in it with the angels, churches, and stuff. Blue Exorcist also plays a role in that category.

As in it's the main theme. I'll put this in spoiler tags just in case, but it's hardly a spoiler since it's the main theme of the show...

You'll be hard pressed to find a show that seriously deals with Occult material as it's sole topic. There are certainly exceptions but more often than not in anime, things like Occultism, science fiction or any number of themes are used as McGuffins.

In other words, the material of Occultism itself isn't so important as much as is it's use to drive the plot.

agian umineko does this wonderfully or the visual novel does. Any series that goes/makes you research to understand what's going makes a decent occult series with mystery/horror etc...Sorry I am just a huge fan-boy lol. Here is another occult sign from umineko that is used to ward of evil spirits/evil magic

Like I said, there are plenty of series as exceptions. Shows that are solemn, serious and dark in subject matter and atmosphere. As Cecil will attest Higurashi and Umineko are good places to start. I personally like Requiem from the Darkness, Mushishi, Samurai Horror Tales, Shigofumi, and Aoi Bungaku. Japan obviously has a completely different perspective on Satanism and I think that it's probably not something appeals to Japanese audiences very often.

The shows I listed are more ponderous on the overall human condition and may involve occult mysticism in general than actually dealing with Satanic practices or symbolism.

What I'm trying to get at is that when you hear the phrase Satanic anime, not much comes to mind. A CR user by the name of superrick, who I'm in a group with, professed he was a Satanist, so maybe he can further your search.

Ye, Higurashi and Umineko are good places to start if u are looking for a serious dark anime with twisted storylines. I've never seen Mushishi before so not sure on that but will probably invest my time into the series in the future. Phantom: Requiem from the Darkness is also one of my favorites too which got really interesting by mid season (dat Cal Devens)
