Ok FF7 wasn't the wet dream of the century, I don't understand why everyone is so obsessed with it. Anyway Final Fantasy Tactics was my personal favoriate in terms of pure enjoyment.

C'mon, everyone has different tastes, Most people in this site started playing from 7 onwards, so they prefer those, old school gamers prefer harder games.

I can't tell what FF is "the best" (best in what? popularity? sales? on metacritic? a vague overall?), if I had to choose, I would say IV, the story, the music, the world and many things were improved, also 5 characters on your team!

But my favorite FF and the one I played first is FF VI, so much memories (the train, the opera, the floating Island, Celes in the little Island and many more), also most of the cast has a unique ability (some of them are useless but most of them were "cool" in its time), I loved the music (Forever Rachel, The Unforgiven, Dancing Mad, etc.) the length of the game and many many things.

@dunno01: I know FF Tactics is a different genre but is a masterpiece on its own, so there you have another spinoff worth mentioning.

My favorites are:

- FF Tactics: Confusing story and I had to play it through a few times just to understand some of the story (still don't really get it), but l have heard that the story goes really in depth with corrupt government and politics or whatever. Whatever. The gameplay system they made in this game is really good, but I wished they made a sequel rather than two okay decent spin-offs. I love this game so much.

- FF Tactics A2: A spin-off sequel to the Gameboy Advance version, with great graphics and great BGM, but boring story.
I mean, some of the sidequests have stories as series, and those are pretty good, but the main storyline didn't catch my interest. This game is only lucky I like it is because of the gameplay and great variety of classes/races/weapons/everything! Sometimes the extra monster encounter battles get repetitive (cause its the exact same each time you fight them), but it's a fun game to play when you're on the subway or something, still enjoyable!

- FF X-2: Sorry, FF X is not my favorite. The gameplay was great, and the story was amazing, but something about the random encounters really really pissed me off (random encounters are pretty much the same, and you can almost breeze through EVERY SINGLE ENEMY with a common strategy while switching to every other person in your party so that everyone gains AP.) FF X-2 broke out of that darned Sphere Grid system (I loved it, but not the AP gaining part...) and brought back levelling up with experience with three great characters.
It's a little obvious that Square-Enix is trying to appeal and sell the game off of boys that wanna see those pretty girls, but the real-time gameplay they added back in the game made it so much more enjoyable. The random encounters were actually challenging, and you could try out different styles of play with multiple dress-spheres. I really like this game!

- FF XIII: I don't like this game like many other people. They are absolutely right when they say that the story and game relies on the player advancing on a linear style gameplay, and it sucks! No exploring until the end of the game, and the beginning of the game is filled with tutorials and long cutscenes. It was a boring beginning. The one thing that makes me love this game so so so so much is the unbelievable artwork in this game. The artwork really is fantastic in this game and the game designers had some really good concepts for this game. And whoever designed the characters did a really great job with the character rendering too, because the graphics are great! I love Lightning, so so much. The scenery, the backgrounds, and pretty much everything really captures the environment it is supposed to, and I just love it. Gameplay is very repetitive however. I could say that a good portion of "random" encounters can be won by simply spamming the A / X button while having the game Auto-Battle for you. Could of been more variety in battle strategies rather than Paradigms.
And here's a cute little chocobo!

Maybe it was one of those things you had to be there for, but I just didn't enjoy Final Fantasy VII. I didn't play it until years after release, but it appears to have aged poorly.

For me my favorites would be FFX and Final Fantasy Tactics. Yes FFX has some annoying characters (I hate Yuna soooooo much) and the story gets a little odd at times (are you ready for another Seymour battle? no, well screw you then here he is again!) but overall I enjoyed the hell out of it, and I still maintain that Blitz Ball deserves it's own spin off game. As for Tactics, once I got over the fact that it's got the learning curve of a shear cliff (seriously, great forced tutorial ya got there) I loved it. The story was interesting and well paced (although it suffered from too many characters at times) and the gameplay was excellent.

Final Fantasy V, dunno why I just love it. It doesn't take itself to seriously and customization is fun. And the many, many way to break the game. Also Galuf is the man.

well, if you're asking the question of "which one was the best" obviously you're gonna get mixed biased results lol

for me personally XIII-2 is my current favorite
why? they fixed a lot of the problems they had in XIII, it was still kind of a slow game and for ppl who liked the turn-based better this must've been pretty bad lol
I always liked the idea of being able to have monsters as your allies
the one thing I didn't like is the fact that u never really got the ending until u beat the game 100%, but I also like it because beating the game 100% is actually rewarding now instead of it just being like a self-satisfaction thing
another is the graphics, how can u forget that
I don't judge if a game is good or not through the graphics, but it's like an additional + if it has good graphics

my other favorites are 6, 7, 8, X, Crisis Core, DISSIDIA, and FFT

6 was cool, it's like everyone's the main character in that game lol
the story was pretty cool, Kefka was probably one of the best villains in the FF series lol
there were a lot of unique things in that game, like an uncontrollable character, a character that requires commands to use moves and all that

7 was just fun for me. it was the first FF game I played
the graphics were pretty good at the time, but it was still pretty laughable lol
I liked each and every character in that game
the motorcycle mini game was fun lol
the systems were really simple in that game, but it was still enjoyable

8 was amazingly fun
the story didn't make any sense, but it was still cool
Rinoa was annoying but the lovestory was nice
I thought it was funny how u can kinda beat the game while only being level 1 basically lol (unless of course you are attempting the no junction clear)
that game was amazingly easy and had the weird draw system, but it was still a lot of fun trying to beat the omega weapon and such lol

X was the best in terms of gameplay IMO
not the best in story, although it was still pretty good
the battle system was my favorite out of all FF games
this game had awesome boss musics, the boss battles were so hype
there wasn't really a dungeon, but I don't really mind that

Crisis Core was just fun to play
action RPG games are one of my favorites
the thing is though that game had almost no replay value, but I feel that way for a lot of final fantasy games so I guess that's just me

DISSIDIA was good, the first one...
I personally just hate the second one
the additional characters are awesome, cool
I loved the coliseum in the first one
but they took that away
and just a bunch of other things I don't like about it but I won't go into detail lol
I think it's just that I put too many hours in the first one so adjusting to the drastic change of the second one is just rough for me lol

I've only played FF XIII-2 and so its kind of biased to say that its my favourite Final fantasy game. I just really like the characters like Lightning cause shes so bad ass. Also, since the game is kind of like pokemon and had so many different endings, I really enjoyed it.

Btw is anyone interested in the next addition to FFXIII, Lightning Returns, I'm really excited about it =)

FF 7 just sux seriously (I'm taking about the main game... not its spin off....)
...Why the fuck would the game let you choose between Tifa and Aerith... if they're going to kill off one....!!

Personally I like FF9 because it is the first one I've ever played...

It was probably to get you emotionally connected with the characters to make Aerith's death feel like you really lost someone important. I wouldn't call FF7 the best one myself. I'd go with FFIV or FFXII.
