I wanted to share my fan art that I did today! I modeled and rendered the blade and mask used by Hei: The Black Reaper in the anime series "Darker Than Black" I would love some feedback from fans of the anime! Modeled in Maya 2012, rendered in Keyshot 3. Please reply with your thoughts and constructive criticism!

Thanks a Million!

Wow, it looks really good. And I really liked Darker than Black, but Season 2 just didn't cut it for me. Btw, i've never heard of Keyshot, what is that software? Plus, are both pictures as in the mask and knife 3D? How about the ground, is that a regular pic that you just included?

Thank you! I actually just started season 2. Keyshot is a rendering program, it uses hundreds of different shaders that can be manipulated to fit the needs of the project, and it renders so much faster than Maya. The mask and knife are fully 3d, but the ground is an environment, as in the program extrapolates lighting as it is in the picture (i used that for a more realistic result) Thanks for the input!

Wow really nice job - I was looking all over the place previously to see if someone had already done a CAD for this place so I wouldn't have to make one myself but I never found yours until just now.

Here's the one I did: http://yzrandome.blogspot.com/2012/06/darker-than-black-heis-dagger-replica.html

Amazing job! The blade looks great. The mask seems a little flat though. The highlights on the blade really make it seem real and in the shot. Nice reflection on the eyes. Would be nice to see the mask appear more dimensional. It's great work, please don't take offense.

The render is great and it looks like you put a lot of time into the lighting and framing of the blade.
However, I am not sure what the blade is like in the anime but there does not seem to be much material definition; it looks like it is all metal and brand new in the second render, but in the first render it has a strong variation between handle and blade which makes it appear more realistic.

If the blade in the anime is actually all metal then the materials are fine, but I would still put a little weathering & some more texture variation in the handle just to make it a little more interesting.

Overall, great job!

Just out of curiosity would you be willing to post a picture the wireframes?
Also, did you use texture maps (diffuse, spec, normal, ext.) for this or was this done using maya/keyshot material attributes?

edit: did I just necro a post? :oo sorry. ://
