PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING Thanks In Advance!
Most of you are probably wondering what exactly this thread is about, so let me clear a few things up for you. The goal here is to highlight "underground" or under appreciated productions and animations that stem from normal storyline types and therefore tend to be avoided and not given a chance (i.e. The Kaleido Star Series). Let me know if you have any suggestions. If you think you know of a series or title that has been overlooked and under appreciated by the general anime-viewing population and you know it is amazing , suggest it here for everyone's benefit. You may also want to include why you believe what you believe about said title. No, Bleach and Naruto are not underground productions.

Here are mine, bias as they may be.
Aria the Animation, Natural, Origination, & Arietta Series'
Kaleido Star Series'
5 Centimeters per Second
La corda d' oro Series'
Angel Heart*

I love things that maintain a strong and unique visual and auditory aesthetic. If you think you appreciate either or both, I'd check out some of the titles listed above. Many, but not all, of these titles have unique storylines that have not been repeated often within the entirety of the anime industry. If you take the time to watch and appreciate them, I'm sure you will be able to comprehend just how much heart was put into each and every one of these.

Then Again, Maybe it's just me who appreciates these. I sure hope not :)

Killerofninja, you said you like shows with quality audio and video. So I'm trying to make sure I understand why you like the shows which you like...

* The Aria franchise is meant to be a relaxing, slice of life series. What I read on Wikipedia indicates it's a show with a quality aesthetic.
* Kaleido Star is a slice of life / sports story about a circus. Most of what I know about it is from the now-inactive Anime Roundtable and Review podcast.
* 5 Centimeters is one of Makoto Shinkai's videos. I know his works get a lot of good press for their animation, and their melancholy stories.
* La Corda is a reverse harem story about music.
* ...I can't find a series called Glass Heart. Perhaps you meant Glass Mask? Or perhaps Angel Heart, based on Hojo Tsukasa's comics?

Anyway, it also sounds like you're looking for hidden gem shows. Especially stuff that falls outside the "it prints money" categories like fighting, harem, and mecha. Here's a couple guides that may prove useful:

* Veteran fan Mike Toole's column at http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/the-mike-toole-show . This person puts on panels at conventions near Boston, and writes extensively about old shows, creators, categories, etc.

* Justin Sevakis' former column Buried Treasure at http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/buried-treasure . Still a good resource for unsuccessful and forgotten series, movies, and OAVs.

I think you got the gist of what I was saying. Also the final title was Angel Heart, the one featuring City Hunter in it. I'll have to take a look at those links, as well. Thanks.

"Edit"
I looked at those links and that's not exactly what I'm looking for. Specifically, I would like to know fan suggestions in terms of titles that they believe are under appreciated "gems." Then again, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

If you believe you know of titles that are under appreciated "gems" Share them here :)
