yea. Those are the Dubai Towers by Foster. Haven't finished yet. It may take some time.

Foster is currently owning on global projects, methinks.

Thats cool. I dont like both. Bauhaus was bordering a little on Rationalism, but still I dont like the works that much. Among the two, I like the Post-modernists less though. The movement's supposed to be a criticism of Modernism, but the movement itself was mainly regarded as a failure.

^^

Modernism is a movement that started around early 1900's after Art & Crafts and Art Nouveau. Its a pretty huge movement worldwide and had many many sub movements like Bauhaus, Italian Rationalism, Organism, Internationalism and alot more. The movement lasted until around 1960's (Modern and modern refer to different things; Modern refers to the specific movement while "modern" means contemporary)

The Post-Modern movement came after. It wasn't really a proper movement as a whole; just a group of smaller movements. It's supposedly a criticism of Modernism but it isn't very successful as well. Some of these sub movements are Brutalism, Constructivism and early Deconstructivism. We see a lot of, like, fragments of these styles (as well as Modernistic principles) in the works of our contemporary architects like Gehry and Foster, but the sub movements themselves are either dead or no longer domineering.

You probably mean skyscrapers. I'd take Petronas and Taipei 101. Cant really separate the parts from the whole design.

Is it really limited to Gothic style architecture? Or did you mean Classical architecture in general? Gothic is a subset of Classical architecture. Others would be Baroque, Rennaisance... there are some pretty good cathedrals there too, yknow.

nope.. jst gothic.. we're actually trying to make a manga here on crunchyrolls.. and the setting of the story is suppose to be on a modern metropolis city with elements of magic in it.. we thought gothic is a pretty spiritual style as a building.. so we're trying to fuse modern look with gothic to the buildings that's on the world of our story... trouble is we can't find a good examples from both style on the net yet.

Since you people here on this thread seems to know lots abt architecture.. i thought i'd discuss it while trying to draw idea from unsuspecting people at the same time : P

There are so many good Gothic buildings: Sainte Chappele, the Cathedral in Cologne, Notre Dame in Paris...

..although I must say, it would be really hard to understand so if you're trying to revive Gothic architecture most probably you won't be able to get the essence and the architecture fails. But since its a manga and nobody would probably know or care anyway, its worth a try, but you will still probably have a hard time even just copying the elements blindly and not understanding the architecture.

do you think it would look weird though? say like.. a art deco style with flying butresses and pointed windows and gargoyles? : S
i get your point.. but as long as it doesn't look funny/erroneous/unpleasing.. it would be good enough i guess..
And does it achieve what we were trying to say? A modern city that was based on magics instead of science..

Hmm.. i guess it will be ok since you're not really sending it to an architectural competition. At this point of the process, your design team should already stop worrying whether it would look weird/erroneous. It has already been weird/erroneous the moment you decided to incorporate Gothic style with "art deco".

In architecture, thats just wrong. Gothic is gothic, you cant revive it. At most you can take the underlying principles and apply it to your own contemporary style. But that will take longer and much more effort cuz then you have to study all of architecture and the classical and stuffs. And even if you do that, you will probably just end up with a modern -looking building and not the ambience that you want to achieve for your manga.

On the other hand, if you go the other way, go superficial and just blindly copy the elements (the butresses, arches, gargoyles, whatever..), chances are it would be totally wrong as a Gothic architecture but will look more like what you want to achieve in the manga. So just go with it and design a totally wrong Gothic-looking pseudo-Gothic architecture .

I'm not completely sure if you can can catch my drift but its kinda hard to explain further.
