I appreciate anime mostly for the visual style, but moreso for the story telling. There's a lot of dark, edgey stuff out there that most traditional 'american' cartoons wouldn't ever dare touch. only within the last few years are we starting to see shows adopt the more serious story telling and have ACTUAL character developement. although western shows have been stealing the visual aspect and animation tricks for quite a while (not to say they are bad, I personally feel its for the better)

One of my cousins looks down upon me for watching anime but he is a cultural chauvinist and religious fanatic i.e. a crazy person... My little sister doesn't like to watch anime but she doesn't hate it... She has watched InuYasha and Rurouni Kenshin and liked them both...
