I only read manga that I buy online in book form, it's very important to support the industry. people don't seem to realise the more you pirate manga and anime the less money the companies have and the less they release stuff over here.

I really want to support the official release, but I don't have the money really. (aside from the CR membership). I dislike e-readers and I'd rather have the actual volume manga that I can flip though. If I had the money I would buy all of the manga and anime (along with merchandise) I could.

Plus, a lot of the manga that I tend to read end up getting dropped or never licensed by a company. (for example, Gintama was dropped after volume 23 and is ongoing and Reborn! was dropped too)

I do support the industry whenever I can. But if I can't, I'm pretty much forced to read it online.

Most probably dropped due to lack of sales, we only have ourselves to blame for that.

Also too much hassle of trying to translate the jokes that wouldn't carry well to the average consumer.

we buy fiscal copies because we want to, not because we get a false sense of pride .

when you buy a normal dvd/book are you going "i'm so glad that the publisher are making money"

plus i would think that a lot of manga artist/writers are paid by commission. (only get paid once)

*The more popular they are, the more they get paid for future projects/chapters.*

That may not what be what everyone thinks, but there are people out there that are proud to support. It would be quite arrogant to assume that cannot be true.

They get royalties from volume sales. One thing I came across

Using Shonen Jump as an example, not sure how it works, but it would seem that the artists makes some royalties from Shonen Jump. It would be less than in Japan, but it's something.
Can't really find any articles of percentages and the like of how much would go back to Japan and the artists. There are a few talking about the "anime economy" though.

Shonen Jump will be taking a lot of their money because technically they marketing them. (Contracts vary)

Your best chance at actually making money is by mass-producing your product. (Even then the big companies will still be taking some of your money)
*it’s not a well paid job*

"anime economy" more blue-rays are sold then normal DVD's.
(you mean anime profits/stocks right. )

PAID BY COMMISSION!

You get royalty's when your books name/art is being used. *you want your book to be printed *
(it's dictated by your Contract)

if your manga is printed you have a little income.

but if your in a magazine you only get paid once for the book. (then they own your soul)

I read it for free, actually mostly from my local library (I just finished Hikaru no Go and started Hellsing). If you have one near you and you haven't checked for Manga/Graphic Novels, you probably should. Hell, if they don't have any, ask if they would get some in.

I generally only pirate when im behind on WSJ or if there is no english release, or just to try something out quickly. I tend to avoid scans more for the translation quality than the piracy part a lot of the time actually.

You appreciate the manga more when you get it less, reading it over again and admiring the art
