I read the first two chapters online to see if i like the backstory/characters; if so then i buy it, including the ones that I have already read. I find it important to fund the publishers that you like rather than stealing their work.

I read ahead if the licensed ones take forever to come out, then purchase them anyway in book form so I can re-read later on. I understand how publishers have to be picky and choose mainstream manga that will sell. So for those that will never see the light of English licensing, I thank the scanlators for making it possible for me to read niche manga or one-shots from some of my favourite manga-ka.

I read manga for free. On the internet. I know it's shameful, but man!! There's not a bookstore here in sight!! And what's worse-- The nearest bookstore is located at the provincial capital. THE CRAPPY CAPITOL!! I'm from the province man, & the bus fare to the capitol costs... I can't really spare that much money. And the bookstores at the Capitol don't actually sell manga. If you're lucky you might find what you're looking for, but usually you don't. I dream of a day when a bookstore that sells manga opens right here at my hometown. But until then... I'll be reading illegally, thank you.

In general, no. I might sample something to see what the story is like, the art style, etc, but once I've decided I like the story then I buy it. It's the only way to encourage that 1) the manga gets completed, and 2) more of that type of manga is produced. In other words, I vote with my wallet.

Almost all the manga I'm in to isn't translated into English, probably because the shoujo market in the USA is small now but if the series gets licensed in English I will buy it, I fully want to support manga so that more comes to the USA.

Read online but buy when (or rather if) licensed. 99% of what I read is bl so it's not not like there is tons of it out there and none at any bookstores (library is a joke!) so I order it all online. I highly support buying but I know what it's like to be broke. It's so thrilling getting a manga that's been preordered for months and just savoring it!
