Bandai Entertainment, the subsidiary of Namco Bandai Holdings (USA) that handles anime and manga in North America, will stop offering new DVD, Blu-ray Disc, and manga releases next month. It will continue to distribute in its existing catalog lineup, but it will no longer produce and distribute new releases as of this February.

Instead, Bandai Entertainment will focus on licensing rights to other companies, particularly in digital distribution, broadcast, and merchandising. The company will be restructured as a result, and most of its contractors and three of its five fulltime staff members will be laid off. ANN will publish an interview with Bandai Entertainment President and CEO Ken Iyadomi on Tuesday.

The following releases have been cancelled:
Anime DVD/Blu-ray Disc

Gosick
Nichijō
Turn A Gundam
Manga

Code Geass: Renya (Code Geass: Shikkoku no Renya)
Gurren Lagann volume 7
Kannagi volumes 4-6
Lucky Star Boo Boo Kagaboo (spinoff by Eretto)
Mobile Suit Gundam 00I
Tales of the Abyss: Jade's Secret Memories volumes 1 and 2

Releases in Bandai Entertainment's current catalog will still be available after February, and Bandai Entertainment plans to produce new stock on these existing releases, if needed, until their respective licenses expire.

Bandai Entertainment closed its own online store in December, but other retailers can still order and carry Bandai Entertainment's current releases as before.

that leaves Funi as the sole "big" anime provider

We all knew it was coming. Hopefully someone picks up Gosick soon. I'm looking forward to buying that series.

What company is left Viz ? Funimation and the other?

You know the sales of DVD have been declining in the advent of the digital internet era plus their competiting piracy industry . If these companies don't modify their business model , they will go out of business.

The same thing with the MUsic industry . CD sales has declined so much in the past decade that distributors and retailer like Virgin record and Tower Records are dying . Apple turned in around with iTunes because they recognize this method of distribution will be the trend .

More and more are buying on line too.

Some of the companies will probably take over like what happened with Geneon America.

I would say this kind of thing only encourages people to illegally find said anime rather than supporting it. -sigh-

Funimation already has a pretty good business model, it releases things in DVD format and online at varying prices. Also with Funimation now partners with niconico it basically has simulcasted shows, not to mention all the series they release online free. I think it's safe to say Funimation will be around for a long time.

Viz on the other hand if they lose Bleach or Naruto then we can count them out for good.

Viz has tons of manga licenses -- in fact, with TokyoPop gone they're pretty much the biggest company in the industry, even with Kodansha taking a more direct hand in the market.

On the book side of things, Bandai kinda sucked. Their manga titles never got that much exposure, and I'd bet most people don't even realize they translated the Code Geass and Eureka 7 light novels into English.

I hope so other wise fewer shows and movies will be released in America. I use the internet as a way to view these shows before I buy, and I do buy but damn how can I spend money if they don't offer the product.

OH CRAP! I hope Gundam gets picked up by Funimation! Turn A and Gundam Unicorn need to come out, among the other Gundams that have never been released.

On another note I do think Funimation has the right business plan they are the only ones that seem to be consistently great. Bandai started releasing less and less.

Well, Bandai Entertainment are still going to be licensing anime so there's still a little hope there.

On the topic of Funimation's partnership with Nico Nico Douga collectively known as Funico, I'm going to assume that they will be one of the largest if not largest company that distributes anime for many years to come.

I remember when Bandai released DVDs for several shows here in North America at Japanese DVD prices.
It went over like a turd on a stove.
They never seemed to think too deeply about things over here.
I was wondering if they'd ever figure it out.

There's much more profit in character goods than DVD or Blu Ray anyway.
