I'm trying to decide which device to buy so I can watch CR on my TV. I had all but decided on the Roku when i learned that CR doesn't actually stream HD to the roku. So all you get is the low res SD version.

So my question is this: Which platforms or devices actually stream HD content?

Thanks!

Akamai HD Network is a platform that does. However I haven't tested it so I cannot guarantee it's quality.

Akamai is a content delivery network. Companies like Netflix and CR use CDNs to speed up delivery of their content by placing it closer to you. I'm talking about hardware devices or applications that CR has written. E.g. Roku, Boxee, iOS, Android, WD Live, & Visio.

I just want to know which of the supported CR apps/devices/platforms can i watch CR in HD. So far Roku is on the not yet list. I'd rather not have to go out and buy the other devices only to find it only supports the crappy SD version.

Thanks!

To the best of my knowledge, if it requires an app (with one possible exception), CR doesn't support 720p on it it yet. If you want to watch 720p, you have to resort to the browser.

The exception may be the Boxee Box, as I think it uses the standard Flash video instead of its own encode, but you would probably want a current Boxee owner to verify that.

I would like to see this either with android or Google tv. I have purchased the Logitech Revue which is an Android based appliance with Google tv and would love see that supported. As well, until it is delivered I use an android tablet for my regular viewing pleasure.

So android would work both ways...

Currently we do not provide HD video through any of our supported apps but we are working to start providing HD video through some devices this year. For reference, we will only provide HD video on devices that we are able to set up secure streaming (DRM). This is necessary to prevent people from downloading the videos for viewing offline since we do not have the right to allow that.

Our iOS app and Roku app streams videos up to 480P quality which is not HD but still very good quality that most people are happy with.

Right now Android has the lowest video quality of our supported apps due to the lack of DRM tools in versions of Android that came before Android 3.2(?) and variety of devices we have to support. So we are likely to support HD playback in devices with Android 3.2 and higher this year while earlier versions will only have access to our lower quality videos, 360P at most. Since versions before Android 3 were mostly on small screen phones, 360P videos look fine on them. Most Tablets are on Android 3 which would be the devices that really need higher quality video so this solution should make most people happy.

I signed up for Premium partly because it said on the sign up page that the Roku would get HD now. According to the dot system it isn't however. Any word on when that will actually come through?

I'd like to see HD on the GTV also but to be frank the picture looks good now so I'm not certain that it's a huge issue?

The Boxee Box does support Crunchyroll's 720p HD videos.

Yeah, the CR Roku Channel shows look good and don't eat up a bunch of bandwidth. I'm pretty content with that.
