Not yet. If CR failed to get it, it would be the first time (to my best recollection) that they failed to get a sequel to a series they had before.

Given that apparently it didn't perform so well here on CR, but did well enough for a second series in Japan, it is probably being stalled by protracted contract negotiations, with CR pushing for a lower minimum guarantee.

Keep in mind that although there is current only one more "?" box, CR has both this season and in previous seasons, sometimes added a box when announcing a series. Until they make an announcement and add no boxes, and have no "1/10 - ??" (or other date) at the top of the lists of announcements, don't think they are done.

Other than the fact that more streaming services and distributors are licensing shows in the US now, I cannot see why it has gotten harder to license the shows for other countries than it was two seasons ago. If I remember correctly, two seasons ago most shows where available internationally (or at least in a great number of regions), then from one season to the next, apparently Sentai Filmworks got a lot of the shows licensed and for some ridiculous reason those shows couldn't be licensed in those regions anymore.

That is probably partially because of Kadokawa, NicoNico and Funimation. Kadokawa shows used to always be on Crunchyroll and be available to a large number of countries. There would normally be 2-4 Kadokawa shows each season. But then Kadokawa back-stabbed Crunchyroll for Funimation. The Funico (Funimation + Niconico) deal means that Kadokawa shows now go to them instead. This means Crunchyroll now has to go for shows from a larger range of companies or via US companies, some of which Crunchyroll has issues with getting international rights.

Also because of the Funico deal it seems Crunchyroll has made more agreements with Funimation's competitors, such as Sentai. Agreements with US companies will always benefit US customers but not be so good for international customers.

Also the UK has been having issues with the availability of shows on Crunchyroll since 3 seasons ago because of Kadokawa back-stabbing Crunchyroll for the UK streaming service AnimeOnDemand. Out of the 15 shows AoD have done in the last 9 months, 10 were on Crunchyroll but blocked in the UK because of AoD. AoD are essentially trying to bully UK anime fans to use them instead of Crunchyroll by making the Crunchyroll simulcast lineup worse for UK customers.

Then Kadokawa backstabbed Funico for CR because Funico's performance is shit? Oh my god!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but i remember that, there were few cases where rights for streaming where obtained after 1st episode and simulcast started with episode 2. So you can still have hope.

Streaming rights are obtained from both the production company and the broadcaster. A lot of animes air on one channel and then a few days later air on another channel. That's why there is delays sometimes. For instance lets say Milky airs on Tokyo MX, but CR licenses the steaming rights from AT-X, they can't stream it until it airs on AT-X.

I looked at the Tantei Opera Milky Holmes 2 page on ANN and Nico Nico Douga is distributing it in Japan... not sure how (or if) this factors into things though. Your reasoning sounds solid though. All we can really do is wait and see.

Well, niconico.jp is streaming a number of other series CR does have (7, if my quick count is correct), so that really isn't much of a factor. A title being on niconico.jp is useful for two things: Indicating willingness to stream (assuming international rights are handled by the same party as domestically), and indicating who the international distributor might be (click through on a title and scroll to the bottom of the page to see who provided it in Japan).

You can also presume that any series that is listed as streaming at niconico.jp that CR didn't get is likely to be elsewhere (i.e., Funico). Last season, ultimately only one title that was listed at niconico.jp was not simulcast in the United States, although. That one series was Ben-to (although gdgd Fairies came so late it only makes the grade on a technicality).

Familiar of Zero F got licensed by Sentai. I'm betting that they at least got the second and third seasons too.
