(please excuse me if the explanation leaves more to be desired i tried my best to leave spoilers out )
For those who don't know a visual novel by the name of Katawa Shojo came out a few days ago. Its about a boy named Hisao who attends a school for the disabled after having a heart attack and finding out he has a congenital heart defect. While attending the school he meets several girls one whose deaf and mute , one whose burnt, one whose blind, one who has no arms , and one who has prosthetic legs. Now this starts to sound like a dating sim but with disabled girls. however its far far far more then that.

In all honesty i cannot word better what this game is about and its true meaning then from a quote thats been going around

" So it's actually not about seducing and nailing disabled girls. The girls happen to have disabilites, but the more you get to know them, the more you come to realize that they are girls like any other. They are humans with hopes and dreams and messy, F****d up insecurities about being alive and happy. They are not strange people - they are regular ordinary human beings who feel the way they feel not because they are disabled , but because they are ordinary. They are the universal allegory for humanity; the archetypal human; the mess you become when you feel sad and alone and unworthy. They are the girl next door, the prom queen, the bookworm, the tomboy , and all the baggage that comes with that - nothing more or less" (full quote : http://i.imgur.com/MCl7y.jpg)

This game/visual novel is something thats hard to explain, like the quote said its not about seducing and nailing the disabled girls. its much much more then that.

With that explanation out , i felt an discussion thread for this was needed.
For those who haven't played it yet : what is your view on this , how do you feel. Do you find this disgusting, interesting , weird?

For those who have played : did you enjoy it ? did you not. what were some of yoru favorite moments

NOTE if you are going to be discussing story content PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE use the spoiler tag. There is alot to this game , and there will be plenty of people who have not gotten to every inch of this game/visual novel yet

I'm very, very early into the game--I just got to the school a bit ago, in fact--but I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

I'm glad to hear that they handled the theme of handicapped girls very maturely, as opposed to what was probably expected to happen.

Very good music in the game, and the art is good too, if not a little mis-matched in places!

Written in Python, so of course!

IIRC, the shell script is broken, though, so you need to download a replacement. *hardly a big deal*

Known this game a long time ago though I pay no interest in it but recently heard about it fakku when the product itself was finished and legit free.I got interested in it though still waiting for the direct download link to become available.

So it's not a dating sim... But it is? I get the whole, "They are normal people despite what's happened to them."
So I guess that first question is more of a statement of the odd wording. I have to say you've gotten me pretty interested in this now. If I want to play it can I just google it and then download? Also is it in English or Japanese?

Dating sims and visual novels that involve sex scenes are very different. Apparently sex scenes provide help for the development of relationships, as the development of relationships are occasionally the central point of visual novels. Visual novels provide developed stories with interactive choices, while dating sims offer the chance for you to get on with some girl after getting all your stats up. You wouldn't call Fate Stay/Night or Kanon a dating sim just because it has sex in it.

Finished the route for Rin, then ended up on the route where you get drunk and pass out on the school roof. Bad end.

I'd classify Katawa Shoujo as both a visual novel and a romance game. Since it's a story told through an electronic game format, it's a visual novel. Since it's a video game about relationships between fictional characters, it's a romance game.

I would not use the term dating sim, because it does not contain simulation gameplay. (Some examples in English which are complex simulations: Shira Oka Second Chances, Magical Diary, Heartache 101, RE: Alistair, Pia Carrot for PC-FX.)

Presumably, the Katawa Shoujo developers will release a direct-download version soon. Be sure to ask politely on their forums.

Carbokill mentioned that this is "incredibly strange." Just remember, there are not many English speaking individuals who admit they watch any form of animation. There are still a lot of people who look down on video games as a whole. And at least a few continue to believe that the only people who use the internet are lunatics. In other words, the same things which some people consider mainstream are considered fringe by other people.

Well that's a good way to explain the difference

I've only just started playing, but so far so good. I can tell they put a lot of effort into the game.

Interesting topic for a game such as this, impressed they didn't go the predictable 4chan way when making this.
