Need option for 1080p as Default Video Quality
|
I see crunchyroll silently added 1080p streaming as a option for the new shows this season which is awesome but I have to manually switch for each video I watch. In the account settings>video preferences the default video quality drop down box only give me the option to select 720p as the highest being able to default videos to 1080p on videos that have it would be great. Also would like to know a few other things such as the bitrate of the 1080p stream and if this is just an upscale or its really a native 1080p/i encode?

I've just passed your suggestion along to Product Development. Hopefully we'll be able to turn around pretty quick and have that implemented. As far as 1080p goes the bitrate is about 2 times that of 720p & we only offer 1080p if we truly have the appropriate source. No upscaling! Please let me know if you have any other questions. |

Catching up. Please be patient.

So basically, since nothing actually airs in 1080p on Japanese TV, you won't offer 1080p for any of your anime? |

Quality varies on what the publishers supply If you haven't looked, several of our new shows are showing at 1080p (Newest episodes of Bleach as well as Naruto, Ano Natsu de Matteru) |

Are videos going to the boxee box defaulting at 1080p now if available? I know the Boxee supports up to 1080p/24 Roku and Boxee will stream at 360 for those who are Free Members. The devices will stream 480p for those who are Premium Members. We're currently working to change this so that Premium Members will be able to access 720 & 1080. |

Boxee already supports and streams at 720p, or at least thats what its detecting it at. Some are at 480p, but most the new stuff seems to be streaming at 720p. Key word there is "seems to be" |

Key word there is "seems to be" You know... That makes sense. I was playing around with the Boxee the other day (when we were exchanging emails) and the picture looked a heck of a lot better than just 480p. Anywho!!! (New kid on the blocks! Still learning all of this!) |

So basically, since nothing actually airs in 1080p on Japanese TV, you won't offer 1080p for any of your anime? It means they won't upscale from the format that is delivered to Crunchyroll. Also, just because the Japanese TV stations broadcast no better than 1080i, does not mean the studio won't have 1080p masters (after all, both 1080i or 1080p are the same 1920 x 1080, only how it is presented to the display differs). Keep in mind that for most series in Japan, Blu-ray disc sales now exceed DVD sales, so there is an incentive to draw or render at a higher resolution. Personally, I will be sticking with 720p, since the 1366 x 768 display of my HDTV would benefit little from 1080p. |

Yes, that's my real age.
