Not yet ~ none of the devices support over 480p, but that may change as part of the changes they'll be rolling out this year.

Really? Certain model Roku's can handle 1080p since at least 3rd quarter 2010. I'm sure Boxee can handle 720p and more as well. 720p was planned since this time last year for Roku, see BasouKazuma post at http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-682693/roku-and-via?pg=3 I don't use a Roku but had been planning on getting one for CR--did CR not make available 720p on Roku then?

I can see a differerence from 720p. Watching Naruto Shippuden, the backgrounds look sharper though the animated characters aren't as sharp, which is probably a limitation of the artwork. The Japanese credits are at full 1080. Of course, subtitles are added electronically, probably through the client player and they look very crisp (although this has nothing to do with the quality of the source video).

Seems a little choppy to me.

On my my gaming rig and my 2011 Air.

I've got fiber optic too...

I guess I'll continue to use 720p for now.

I have similar findings with the same connection. Good laptop capable of good Blu-Ray playing and the trusted iMac both had hiccups every few minutes. I paid for membership knowing 720p was what was offered and I suppose it is enough for me. Thanks for 1080p, will probably keep using it to test more as I only watched a few things on both so far.

Ah, you know what I mean, Crunchyroll doesn't support HD on any of its device apps or channels other than the web site, so far, but this year they'll be rolling out support on devices that allow it. Of course Roku can support Netflix in HD, that's their bread and butter.

I honestly don't see the difference...and why premium members only? CR FAILS.

I find it amusing that you state you don't see any difference, and then complain that it is for premium members only. To put is another way, it is as if you are saying, "This is useless! Give it to me!".

As to them not giving it to free members, perhaps you don't understand the concept of "premium". Those ads you watch on 360p streams help pay for those and the licensing cost of the anime. They don't pay for 480p, 720p, and certainly not 1080p streaming, all of which involve extra bandwidth. Bandwidth isn't all that expensive, but those ads don't pay much, either. Would you still want free 1080p is it meant twice as many ads?

The only legal site I know of that does 720p anime for free is NicoNico.com, and that is because they are trying to build an audience, and are willing to take a loss to do it.

Want 720p anime at Hulu? Gotta pay for Hulu Plus. Want 720p anime at Funimation? Gotta pay for an Elite Membership. Want 720p anime at The Anime Network? Gotta pay for a subscription.

I'm not sure if this is a good idea. With good reason: some of the biggest broadcasters in Japan that use the ISDB-T standard for digital broadcasting only broadcast in 720p (I know TV Asahi uses 720p), so going to 1080p is not that useful. As such, the original "source" anime may only be available in 720p, so going to 1080p is kind of overkill.

Thank you crunchy for increasing the quality yet again. I can speak for myself and say I stream your site from my entertainment pc to my 55 inch and my 60 inch respectively. The quality always makes more of a difference when you get a bigger screen value involved. Streaming in full up-scaled HD is a very nice feature to attract new premium members and keep your current subscribers. I also have noticed that your seasonal anime selection has grow by one or two shows per season, more content and better base quality is always a winning formula for success. Thanks Crunchy for a job well done.

Doubt anyone will listen but I'd like to make this note for people who are saying, "Oh, well, my computer can play 1080P BluRays but it won't play the 1080P streams" and whatnot.

Flash video is much tougher on CPU/GPGPU than H264, even 10bit. Really.
