Really a good thing.

Unfortunately I don't have a monitor with the correct resolution and an internet speed that is at his limit to support 1080p resolution. However this is a really good improvement for Cruncyroll.

For me, for now, 720p is ok and enough

Crunchyroll streams episodes after buying a license to stream it, because of that there getting direct anime content from anime companies the legal way versus fan sites. They offer these high quality videos after 1 hour after being air in Japan per episode. Now you can't download episodes though to the fact that's not what the license gives them the right to do and does hurt the animator badly due to fact that there not getting the proper pay per download which is why fansites are a huge issue. By buying a Crunchyroll premium membership ur able to watch anime in HD and support the anime industry as some of the money from ur membership going to the animators themselves.

So... everyone knows that the highest resolution for TV anime is 720p, right? The only full way it could be full 1080 is if it was ripped from the Blu-ray.

If we talk about quality, i would like same not web-based video player. Flash player is not the most efficient, and I'm nearly sure that stand-alone player could use better decoding, filters etc so quality would greatly improve with the same resolution. You could also watch higher resolutions on older computer because it'll use less computing power. For example my laptop easy play downloaded 480p or even 720p(with good encoding) but have problem when playing 420p video on crunchy. I know that direct download is impossible so i think same downloadable player would be great.

Awesome!

Now all we need is something like Sky TV's service where you can download anime DRM managed for time limited periods to avoid buffering issues, which let's be honest, pop-up even on a good day and can ruin a good anime half-way.

Crunchyroll does not work from RAWs captured from broadcast, they work from material sent to them from Japan. Most of it is HDCAM format, so its either 1080p or 1080i.

In other words, they are working from the same source material that the Blu Ray maker would be using. They don't have to "rip" the material from anyone, since they get the actual raw material straight from the source.

That means that whether its upscaled to 1080p, frame animation upscaled to 1080 backgrounds, or all source material is created in 1080p ... any upscaling is done in Japan when the material is placed onto HDCAM to send to Crunchyroll.

I bet when they roll out their HTML5 site, people with well-written HTML5 browsers will see an upgrade in video performance. I don't know when that will be ~ but I expect that their first priority is to get apps or channels for more devices and to allow devices that can play HD access to HD streams.
