If thats true, then I'm all for this. Any idea what the bit rate is like now?

That link says twice the bitrate, and its only going to be available when they are given 1080 resolution materials.

What's the advantage, if any, of 1080p, at least for anime, if the source material is less than 720p anyways? Usually the end user's device (receiver, computer) handles the scaling properly anyways. Is there some advantage to CR doing the upscaling for the end user? Or have things changed on the production/broadcast/source side over in Japan? Thanks

The materials delivered to Crunchyroll are, of course, 1080p, since Japanese digital HD television broadcasts in 1080i. The whole issue involves whether the 1080i are upscales from lower resolution sources: Crunchyroll has said they are only going to be streaming in 1080p if they get 1080p material. So if there is upscaling going on, its the Japanese animation producer doing the upscaling.

The industry in Japan has become increasingly dependent on Blu-Ray in the past two years, and of course at the same time processing power has dropped. Two years ago, the word I had heard was that 540p was common for animation, which is the cheapest in terms of computer processing power and storage capacity that still shows an appreciable upgrade from DVD SD to Blu-Ray HD, over and above getting rid of the DVD compression artefacts. Given the commercial importance of BD (more than half the physical media market from the last ANN report I saw), I'd not be surprised if 720p is getting more common.

Its cheaper to scan the backgrounds at high enough resolution so that even with background pan and scan, it resolves to 1080p. Since the series go to broadcast in 1080i, it'd be surprising if they did the backgrounds in 540p for series going to air in 2012.

As far as the whole upscaling issue, if there's a choice between using the upscaling done by the Japanese animation producers compared to the upscaling done by an automatic system built into the TV, I'd guess the Japanese animation producers know what they are doing, and are doing it for anime in particular and not all video content in general. But I don't have the bandwidth, so its not an issue for me.

If Crunchyroll was doing the upscaling (as some commentators seem to suggest, but which is a silly assumption to make since the series air in 1080i), I'd not favor it: just as Crunchyroll does not stream in 720p when the materials they have are in 480p. But Crunchyroll has said they are not going to do that, so the whole "Crunchyroll upscaling" talk seems to be based on a misconception.

Get a better player, the 1080p is almost nothing in improvement.

The quality is only VERY minor in terms of improvement for those streaming to a HD TV or viewing on a 1920x1080 native resolution monitor, if not streaming on either of those devices then the perceived quality increase can be attributed to the psychology of "bigger numbers are better".

It would be a different story if there was some content produced in 1080p and streamed here, but there isn't so it really is just marketing fluff.

This will make the husband happy, since he loves his 52" HD flatscreen and would rather watch his anime on a screen larger than what's in the office.

I for one would prefer 480p video at a higher bitrate, which would mean fewer compression artifacts and less color banding. Resolution is a bit overrated when it comes to streaming IMO; the lossiness of the compression is a much bigger factor for visual quality. A regular dvd generally looks better than a 1080p youtube video just because the higher bitrate does wonders for the subtle details that more rigorous compression algorithms wipe clean.

In all seriousness, the main reason why I don't opt to pay for premium membership at sites like crunchyroll is because the compression is too obtrusive for me to consider paying that much for it.

Does that mean that Free Members can get 480p? Nope, we're stuck with crap quality! Thanks a ton for just shoving your junk right in our faces!

Awesome; HD anime was the reason I became a premium member here, and now it's even better!

Bandwidth costs money, and you're not providing any by being a free member (other than clicking on the ads). Want a higher quality image? Upgrade to premium!

I could do that. Or I could just download what I want from another site in higher quality for no charge.

Besides, it seems they have enough money to provide enough bandwidth to premium members to stream 1080p. Why wouldn't they have enough to provide 480p to free members?
