So do you consider this stuff overpriced here?

Personally I don't think it's overpriced here whatsoever. I think this stuff is priced very reasonably, especially compared to years ago when you had to pay $30-$40 for 3-4 episodes (87 Dragon Ball Z singles anyone?), and compared to Japan's prices. It takes a lot of time and money to make, license, sub, dub these shows, along with other things. These companies wouldn't make enough money if it was retailed at $20 for 13 episodes. Justin and Zac on ANNCast even said as much about when it's $20. (Listen from 15:00-18:00)

Also for people who don't know Japanese prices, here's some examples.

My response was "no." As Meidou said, prices have been decreasing over the years. I definitely remember paying $25-30 for VHS tapes with just two episodes each... and learning that dubbing was an expensive process, tapes with English dubs sold more and generally cost less.

It's now pretty rare to see single discs of anything. Okay, there are anime theatrical films and compilations of OAVs/ONAs. But I think that companies are finding it tough to sell most series with only three or four episodes per package.

Prices of videos definitely differ per nation. I'm sure someone has a good, current reference for what people can expect to pay, depending on where you live.

Of course not, but nothing is ever cheap enough for us, usually.

To me, a fifteen year old girl, yes its overpriced. I don't have 40 dollars to spend on 10 episodes of anime! I could buy other tv series for way less.

I voted yes on overpriced, but I will say DVD/Blu-ray, Crunchyroll/Netflix, and even iTunes downloads are fairly affordable. The reason I voted yes is because we don't get the cool "toys", sound track, and video games Japan gets. We get cheaper versions in the US, but to get the real thing we must visit local anime shops or even order from Japan.

I don't believe so. I'm working poor, yet I've been able to buy some of the series/movies I love.

Cheap? No.
But is it unreasonable considering how much licensers have to invest into the product, and compared to other movies/series? Generally not.

Most licensing companies in America have perfectly fair prices these days and you can buy full seasons or at least 13 or so episodes in each case. Except for Aniplex. There's no other company I can think of that would still release a 12-episode series in 3 releases with the DVDs only being $30 per case. The BDs are $40 per case and the limited edition DVD+BD combo packs are $75 each, and that's at their "sale" price. If I could get the DVD+BD combo pack for $75 for the whole series I'd pay it, though still complain at the price, but I am certainly not paying $90 for the DVDs alone. Especially compared to the prices I've paid for other series when buying from the distributors.

I bought Clannad and Clannad ~AfterStory~ (24 and 25 episodes respectively) at about $40 each
Air (12 episodes + 2 OVAs) for $15 and Kanon 2006 (24 episodes) for about $25 (those were from funimations S.A.V.E. deal though, so they were cheap)
Gurren Lagann (27 episodes) for about $30, Code Geass season 1 (25 episodes) for $30 from Best Buy
Angel Beats! (13 episodes + 1 ova) for about $50 as soon as it was released
And The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya season 1 (14 episodes) season 2 (14 episodes) and the movie (DVD+BD) was about $75 total for all of them.

I had no problem with any of those prices, but Aniplex even now won't release things in one set at decent prices even though every other major company will. Seriously, Durarara!! (24 episodes) is still in 3 parts at $40 each for the DVDs and the new series Fate/Zero comes in a box set of all 13 episodes (the rest don't air til spring) at a ridiculous price of...

Retail Price: $369.98
