Hello all you fine otaku,

I've been hearing about this place for years and finally decided to take the plunge and get me a membership. I gotta say, pretty damn cool and 1080p streams are awesome.

Today I was looking through the nice selection of titles and stared to notice that almost all the ratings are 4-5/5, has everyone just settled with the generally contrived and stereotyped nature of anime or are you all just extremely bias?

Not that any of the anime is particularly "bad", I just thought the rating system is kinda redundant by the looks of things. If I'm out of my cotton picking mind, please let me know.

Why was my post reported? Did I post in the wrong section or something?

It was reported as a personal thread.
I don't think it is so carry on.

*btw* my opinion on ratings is most of the time they are done by fanboys/fangirls that would never admit their fav anime is anything less than perfect. So all the high ratings need to be taken with grain of salt.

Anything less than a 4 means its pretty mediocre, 4-4.8 means its decent, and the the remaining ranks means the anime might be fairly good.

Your typical give-every-anime-a-5-star-rating fanboy/girl -> "OMG I'M WATCHING THIS SHOW FOR MY 16TH TIME, MOST PERFECT ANIME EVAAAAA!!!!1"

I watch things I like, ergo, I will rate them on the higher end of the scale. I would imagine that's how most people operate.

I'm not a paid critic, as such I won't do deep analysis or go out of my way to watch series I don't like for the purposes of rating them. That would be work, and I refuse to work for free.

Same here. When it's porn or anime, I never care for the ratings.

you learn after a while everyone who rates anime are retarded and shouldn't be trusted upon

honestly reading reviews of the anime is far more: 1) intelligent 2) better than a number scale 3) you get a sense of what you might expect

there are a few animes that actually deserve what they get rated and whole LOT more that do not get what they get rated

Yeah, I think the tendency toward very high ratings is largely due to fangirl/fanboy effect. But sometimes I think something else is going on. I'd say most of the time when I read the reviews that aren't all "yay, yay, omg, so awesome!!!" the person writing a review still assigns a star rating that is much higher than I would have guessed based on the review.

But also it's maybe that if you've watched enough of something to justify rating it, you're going to naturally rate highish. For example, I don't like to rate something based on seeing just one or two episodes, so if I don't like those one or two episodes I'm less likely to watch more episodes, and thus a potentially low rating never gets registered, because I mostly only rate stuff I've liked enough to watch a lot of.

I think most people who would give a low rating just move on to other anime instead. Although this may be overestimating peoples' good intentions, it's kind of a "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" sort of thing. In this case I think it's just that people don't care to leave a rating if they don't like it, and if they do like it many people (especially the younger viewers) are quick to give it a max rating just because it gives them some fleeting joy. I wouldn't be surprised if half the people who gave it 5 stars would give it 3 stars in a couple years, or maybe even months.

Anime News Network has the same problem. I have very rarely seen a show rated outside of the 7-8.5 range on that site. It pretty much makes the whole system worthless.

Even reviews only go so far. In the end you just have to watch it and decide for yourself.

I think that my own personal ratings would reflect this for two reasons. I don't watch anything and everything simply because it's anime. I usually put a fair amount of research into what I want to watch before I begin and accordingly haven't watched a vast amount of series because of that very process. I mean, I've checked out other people's anime lists for people who might have started watching at roughly the same time as myself and they amazingly have watched 4-5 times as much. Secondly, the selection I watch hardly produces low results because, as mentioned, you follow through with the quality shows and dump the poor ones.

OTOH, it means if you saw a show with a rating of a 6 or 5, it must stink like the dung of the dead.

Which leads to the question on whether someone would deliberately continue watching a bad show or drop it right away. I would think that if someone does the former that it would lead to more ratings in the middle of the scale while the latter would produce lower scores for a show.

When i rate an episode i rate it on how i really feel, if its a boring ep i give it a 1 star and if i loved it alot i give it 5. Even if its my fave series a bad ep should be put down as a bad ep.
