This reminds me of an Onion headline about facebook being down and throwing the nation into hours of productivity.

Just thinking about one facet of this -- if I understand things correctly, some talk of this legislation is that it may offer the opportunity for corporations to suppress websites because of even indirect copyright issues (such as fans discussing a show on an open forum), up to and including opening the chance for sites to be shut down without due process.

This could, in theory, affect Crunchyroll -- not from the anime/drama content per se, which is all officially licensed, but because people regularly and freely discuss all aspects of anime, including posting unlicensed photos/graphics shots and screen captures. Yeah, it's on the fringe of the legislation's interest, but this type of thing is being discussed on NPR and other news sources. Specifically, there have been efforts to completely suppress information that was seen as critical to a company's interests, all on the basis of alleged copyright infringements. Even when the claims were not valid is still affected the exchange of information.

So...it would be cool if Crunchyroll did something as part of the overall protest. Not restrict access to licensed content, but at least made some sort of nod to the issue.

Not suggesting they should, that's none of my business, but simply suggesting that it may be relevant.

I wonder, will this affect manga hosting sites as well? I'm still attempting to understand the SOPA and all this jazz.

Sopa won't pass, there is too much resistance against it. How could they go against Microsoft and Google, who oppose it. They will have paramilitary forces down their throats the day after. When google and Microsoft decide its time to take over the world.
