Generally speaking, jutsu are divided into three categories: genjutsu, ninjutsu, and taijutsu. Ninjutsu also has two sub-categories: sealing jutsu and cursed seal jutsu, which are jutsu used to create seals for various purposes. There are also kekkei genkai abilities. These are not actually jutsu, but genetically-inherited abilities that are only possessed by specific clans.
Depending on the difficulty or skill necessary to perform a jutsu, they will be ranked differently. There are a total of six ranks, plus two informal ranks for special circumstances. The rank of a jutsu doesn't necessarily mean it will be more effective than a lower-ranked jutsu, just more difficult to perform properly. The overall effectiveness of any given jutsu is largely based on individual skill. The two informal ranks are Hiden (秘伝, Hiden? "Secret") jutsu and kinjutsu (禁術, kinjutsu? "forbidden technique"). Hiden jutsu are jutsu passed down from generation to generation within a clan. These jutsu are not ranked since no one outside the clan knows how to perform them.Kekkei genkai-based jutsu also fall under this rank since it is impossible for anyone else to perform them. Kinjutsu, on the other hand, often do fall into one of the six main ranks, but are an exception because they are forbidden (or, at the very least, frowned upon) to learn or perform. A technique can be categorized as forbidden if it either causes great harm to the user, such as opening the Eight Gates, or if the techniques are dark or sinister in nature, such as those used by Orochimaru. The six main jutsu ranks are as follows:
E-rank: Academy student level
D-rank: Genin level
C-rank: Chunin level
B-rank: Jonin level
A-rank: Kinjutsu, Ultra-high class ninjutsu level
S-rank: Ōgi (Secret techniques), highest level
Cursed Seal jutsu
Cursed Seal jutsu (呪印術, juin jutsu?, lit. "cursed seal techniques" or "Technique of the Accursed Mark") are jutsu that use a special 'cursed seal' to put someone under the control of the user or elicit an unnatural effect in the one they are placed on. They can be used to cause either pain (including death if the pain is large enough) or invoking various mutations in the recipient.
Genjutsu (幻術, Genjutsu? "Illusion Techniques") are techniques that use the chakra in the victim's nervous system to create illusions; basically an advanced intellectual ninjutsu. Those with special abilities like the Uchiha clan's Sharingan or those with high intelligence have an easier time executing and countering genjutsu, as attention to detail is key. The most commonly seen genjutsu is the simple creation of phantasms – causing the targeted person(s) to hear, see, smell, taste and/or feel sensations that are not actually there in order to manipulate them. In other words, genjutsu affects the five senses, though other applications of genjutsu exist. Those under the influence of genjutsu either freeze in place or lose consciousness, depending on how capable they are in recognizing and defending against it.
There are several ways to counter genjutsu. Because it uses the victim's own chakra against them, the target can cancel the genjutsu by disrupting their own chakra flow. This is called Genjutsu Cancel (幻術解, Genjutsu Kai). Alternatively, should they fail to cancel the genjutsu, intense pain (though not that caused by the genjutsu) can snap them out of it. Finally, someone else can disrupt their chakra flow for them through physical contact.
Although humans and dogs are affected by genjutsu, insects do not even notice it. This is because genjutsu attack the brain of the victim, which insects do not rely on much. As Shino puts it, insects are ruled almost solely by five powerful senses, which makes them immune to genjutsu and gives the Aburame clan an ability to detect it when nobody else can.
Kekkei Genkai (血継限界, Kekkei Genkai? "Bloodline Limit") are abilities passed down genetically in specific clans. Most clans have developed special jutsu related to their kekkei genkai and their related jutsu cannot be taught or copied by others, as they require the specific genetic trait to work. Kekkei genkai abilities that work via the user's eye are called "pupil techniques" (瞳術, dōjutsu?), such as the Byakugan, Sharingan, and Rinnegan.
Ninjutsu (忍術, Ninjutsu? "Ninja Techniques") is a vague term referring to almost any technique that uses chakra and allows the user to do something that they otherwise would be incapable of doing. The earliest forms of ninjutsu are said to have been created by the first owner of the Rinnegan. Unlike genjutsu, which makes the opponent see illusions, the effects of ninjutsu are quite real. Ninjutsu relies on chakra and, most of the time, hand seals (each hand seal showing a different animal in the Chinese zodiac) to be effective. The hands are put in sequential positions that mold chakra in the necessary manner to perform a jutsu. This is not always consistent, however, and some of the simpler jutsu seem to become second nature to experienced ninja, after which they can perform them at will. Additionally, some ninjutsu can be classified as an elemental jutsu, in those cases where a specific element (earth, fire, lightning, water, wind) is used. The phrase "Ninja Art" (Ninpō) is occasionally added to the beginning of the jutsu.
Sealing jutsu (封印術, Fūin jutsu?) are jutsu that 'seal' something inside objects or living beings. The most common application of this is sealing weapons or other objects within scrolls to efficiently carry a large number of items. Sealing jutsu are also utilized to restrict access to things, such as chakra or entry to a building.
Taijutsu (体術, Taijutsu? "Body Techniques" or "hand-to-hand combat") refers to any techniques involving the martial arts or the optimization of natural human abilities in general. In other words, taijutsu is executed by accessing the user's stamina directly, rather than converting the user's stamina to chakra in order to execute a ninjutsu or genjutsu technique, meaning that taijutsu is much quicker to execute than (though not always as powerful as) ninjutsu or genjutsu. In some cases, chakra is used to enhance the techniques, particularly in the Hyuga clan's Gentle Fist style, and in the case of Tsunade and Sakura, who combine chakra into their attacks to cause great damage. Generally speaking, however, most taijutsu users rarely use chakra in their attacks, such as Rock Lee and Might Guy.
Those aspiring to become a ninja must first enter the Ninja Academy, where they are required to learn a number of basic jutsu before they can go on to becoming full-fledged ninja. The most basic of these jutsu is the Cloak of Invisibility Technique (隠れ蓑の術, Kakuremino no Jutsu?, English TV: "Disguise Jutsu"), which utilizes a cloak or a piece of cloth and help a ninja blend into an object, making them invisible. The Rope Escape Technique (縄抜けの術, Nawanuke no Jutsu?, English TV: "Escape Jutsu") is equally basic, as it simply allows the user to escape from their confinements. As the student progresses they move onto jutsu that require chakra, such as the Exploding Tag: Activate (自爆札・活, Jibaku Fuda: Kassei?), to remotely detonate an explosive, an advanced version of this is Barrier Encampment Method (結界法陣, Kekkai Hōjin?) where an array of explosive markers are jointly placed around the boundary of an area. If any opponent walks through the boundary, the seals will activate and explode. The Transformation Technique (変化の術, Henge no Jutsu?, English TV: "Transformation Jutsu") also requires chakra, though once properly learned the user can assume the appearance of any person, animal, or object.
As students near the time of graduation they learn more complicated techniques that have the added advantage of being more useful in battle. The Body Replacement Technique (変わり身の術, Kawarimi no Jutsu?, English TV: "Substitution Jutsu") allows the user to quickly switch places with a nearby object to either escape or distract opponents. While logs are typically used for this jutsu, anything can act as the replacement, people included. The most complex of the Academy jutsu is the Clone Technique (分身の術, Bunshin no Jutsu?, UK DVD "Art of Body Splitting" "USA DVD" "Clone Jutsu"), which creates illusionary copies of the user that dissipate when they come into contact with something. The clones have no impact on their surroundings (they won't kick up dust, crush grass, etc.), making them easily distinguishable. More experienced ninja typically abandon the use of this jutsu in favor of clone techniques with more substance, such as the Shadow Clone Technique or any number of elemental variants. After graduating and advancing to the rank of Genin, ninja typically learn the Body Flicker Technique (瞬身の術, Shunshin no Jutsu?) to momentarily boost the user's reflexes. With it they can move short distances at an almost untraceable speed, appearing to onlookers as though they teleport in a puff of smoke. The range of the technique is dependent on the user's chakra supplies, and as such the ability is rarely used to cover long distances due to the amount of energy it would require.
The Byakugan (白眼, Byakugan? literally "White Eye," English manga "Evil Eye") is an eye technique (瞳術, dōjutsu?) that naturally occurs in members of the Hyuga clan. Byakugan possessors are characterized by their lavender, pupil-less eyes. When the Byakugan is activated, their pupils somewhat appear and the veins near their temples bulge. Possessors of the Byakugan are also capable of using the Gentle Fist style of combat.
A person with the Byakugan has a nearly 360 degree field of vision, except for a small blind spot at the back of the neck above the third thoracic vertebra.Byakugan users can detect anything around them within a small radius, the greater the users skill with the Byakugan, the larger the radius is, which makes them close-range combat experts. Neji Hyuga manages to increase the radius from 50 meters to over 800 meters during the timeskip. The Byakugan also gives the user the ability to see through basically any matter over extremely long distances. A small degree of telescopic vision is also present, as a Byakugan user can focus on a single object at any point within their range of vision. The degree of focus seems to be dependent on the skill of the user. The Byakugan's insight capacity makes it useful for searching, tracking, and identifying targets.
Protection of the Byakugan ability is very important to the Hyuga clan, and has led to the development of an elaborate family hierarchy. Members of the lesser branch house are branded with a cursed seal on their forehead at a young age. Whenever a branch house member dies, the cursed seal will seal the Byakugan ability so that enemies will not be able to discover its secrets. Its secondary purpose is to control the branch house, since it can be activated at will by a main house member with a special hand seal, destroying the wearer's brain cells.
Sasuke using Chidori (千鳥, literally "One Thousand Birds") is an example of nature manipulation created by Kakashi Hatake after he failed to infuse his own nature manipulation with the Rasengan. The Chidori requires the user to channel a great deal of lightning-based chakra to their hand, so much so that the ordinarily invisible chakra becomes visible to the naked eye. Due to the high concentration of electricity the attack creates, it emits a sound that is reminiscent of chirping birds (hence the name). Once the attack is formed the user rushes at their opponent and thrusts their arm into a certain part of the body, such as the heart. While the technique is usually fatal to its target, the speed at which the user moves causes them to experience tunnel vision, leaving them open for attack. If the user possesses a Sharingan, however, they are able to take in more detail while moving, allowing them to avoid counterattacks.
The Chidori requires a great deal of control in order to be properly utilized; Kakashi, being the creator of the technique, has reached the peak of control over the ability. Because of this, Kakashi's version is referred to as the Lightning Blade (雷切, Raikiri?), a higher ranked form of the ability with which he once split a bolt of lightning, according to Might Guy (hence the name). Due to the high levels of chakra required to form the technique, those able to perform it are limited to very few usages a day. Kakashi is only able to use his Lighting Blade four times a day in Part I. In Part II, while there is no indication his capacity has increased, he is seen collecting lightning-chakra to his hands multiple times, though they are never named as Chidori or the Lightning Blade. In Part II Kakashi has demonstrated the ability to deflect a high level lightning attack by generating a Lightning Blade in each hand. Kakashi teaches the Chidori to Sasuke Uchiha in Part I, who is only able to perform it twice a day under his own power. While his maximum number of usages in Part II has yet to be seen, he has used the fundamental behind the Chidori to create a number of lightning-based attacks.
In Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2 and 3 the Lightning Blade of the character ANBU Kakashi is named Young Lightning (若き雷, Wakaki Ikazuchi?). However, its difference with the basic version is unknown. Kakashi also employs another variations of the Lightning Blade in the game.
The Combination Transformation (コンビ変化, Konbi Henge?, English TV: "Transformation Combo") is an advanced transformation technique that transforms two users into one being; one user usually provides the chakra while the other performs the necessary hand seals. Naruto Uzumaki uses this ability with Gamabunta so that they can take on the form of a giant fox. The members of the Sound Four use it to assume the identities of the Fourth Kazekage's two bodyguards. Kiba Inuzuka and Akamaru perform a variant of the ability to take the form of a giant double-headed wolf, through which they can perform a number of other jutsu.
Dead Demon Consuming Seal
The Dead Demon Consuming Seal (屍鬼封尽, Shiki Fūjin?, English TV: "Sealing Jutsu: Reaper Death Seal") is a seal created by the Fourth Hokage that invokes the powers of the death god (shinigami, simply dubbed the "reaper" in the English version). Once called upon, the death god hovers behind the user and remains invisible to the opponent until it has grasped their soul. Once summoned, the death god reaches its arm into the summoner, signifying the hold it has upon their soul. After the sealing is completed the death god consumes the user's soul soon afterwards, killing them. Once a soul has been eaten by the death god it resides within the god's stomach, destined to do battle with its fellow souls for all eternity.
Unlike many of the other seals used throughout the series, the Dead Demon Consuming Seal has served different purposes for each of its uses. When first used by the Fourth, it sealed the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox within Naruto Uzumaki. Once the fox was sealed within Naruto, the Fourth used a Four Symbols Seal (四象封印, Shishō Fūin?, English TV "Double Tetragram Seal") and the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style (八卦の封印式, Hakke no Fūin Shiki?, English TV "Eight Signed Seal") so that the demon fox's chakra could mix with Naruto's. When later used by the Third Hokage's shadow clones, the Dead Demon Consuming Seal sealed the souls of the First and Second Hokage within the clones' bodies. In this instance, the death god consumed the Hokage's souls in addition to the souls of the clones, suggesting that it consumes whatever souls are present within the user's body. When the actual Third Hokage uses the seal, it sealed Orochimaru's arms, preventing their use.
Destruction Bug Host Technique
The bugs residing within Shino's bodyThe Destruction Bug Host Technique (寄壊蟲の術, Kikaichū no Jutsu?, English TV "Parasitic Insects Jutsu") is a symbol of membership to the Aburame clan. When a child is born into the Aburame family, their body is offered to insects, called destruction bugs, as a nest. The bugs feed and live off the chakra that the body stores and in return the ninja gets to control and command the bugs, using them as their primary fighting technique. These bugs have the ability to drain chakra through physical contact with the enemy.
Shino Aburame, the most commonly seen member of the clan, has found a number of uses for these bugs, and as such has devised a number of jutsu that utilize them for varying purposes. The first of these jutsu that is seen is his Bug Clone Technique (蟲分身の術, Mushi Bunshin no Jutsu?), which uses the bugs to create a copy of himself that is able to reform once struck. In terms of defensive abilities Shino can use Bug Wall Technique (蟲壁の術, Mushi Kabe no Jutsu?) to create a protective wall of insects to shield himself or his allies. Should he run short on insects, Shino can use Bug Gathering Technique (蟲寄せの術, Mushi Yose no Jutsu?) to create a web-like array of chakra that lures nearby bugs to himself.
Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique
The Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique (火遁・豪火球の術, Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu?, Viz "Fire Style: Blaze Of Glory", English TV "Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu") is the most basic method of fire manipulation in Naruto. The technique requires a large amount of chakra to perform. The user fills their chest with air, infuses it with fire chakra and blows out, creating an enormous external ignition, similar to firebreathing. This technique, as are the more complicated fire-based abilities, are common amongst Konohagakure ninja at or above Chunin-level. The Uchiha clan considers a child from the clan who masters this technique a man. They are also allowed to learn some of the clan's more complicated techniques.
Other variations using the base of this technique are Fire Release: Phoenix Immortal Fire Technique (火遁・鳳仙火の術, Katon: Hōsenka no Jutsu?, English TV: "Fire Style: Phoenix Flower Jutsu") to shoot balls of fire in quick succession, sometimes with shuriken hidden inside as added effect and Fire Release: Dragon Fire Technique (火遁・龍火の術, Katon: Ryūka no Jutsu"?, English TV: "Fire Style: Dragon Flame Jutsu") to blow a large torrential burst of fire along a length of cord that are attached to a shuriken.
In the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja series, Sasuke Uchiha and Itachi Uchiha employ enhanced versions of these techniques.
The Gentle Fist stanceThe Gentle Fist (柔拳, Jūken?) style of combat aims to damage the body's chakra circulatory system, thus inhibiting an opponent's use of chakra. To do this, the user will forcefully insert a small amount of their own chakra into an opponent's chakra circulatory system, causing the targeted area to rupture or divert flow. Alternatively, or as an additional effect, the same method can be used to damage the opponent's internal organs, to which the chakra circulatory system is closely tied. Even the slightest tap from this style can cause major damage, hence the name. Because the chakra circulatory system is invisible, the Byakugan is required for this style to be used effectively and thus it is exclusive to the Hyuga clan. As there is no way to train the internal organs to become stronger, this technique is capable of causing damage no matter how physically powerful the opponent is.
To quickly seal off an opponent's access to chakra, Gentle Fist style users can perform the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms (八卦六十四掌, Hakke Rokujūyon Shō?, English TV: "Gentle Fist Style: Eight Trigrams 64 Palms") to strike each of an opponent's chakra points in progressively heavier and faster volleys. Once completed the technique effectively eliminates an opponent's ability to use chakra and makes it difficult for them to move. The same process that seals off one's access to chakra can also be used as a shield. With Eight Trigrams Palms Heavenly Spin (八卦掌回天, Hakkeshō Kaiten?, English TV "Eight Trigrams Palms Rotation"), the user releases a huge amount of chakra from their chakra points when in danger of being attacked. The released chakra blocks any possible attack, and the user need only spin themselves rapidly to parry the attack, both creating a shield of chakra around themselves and tossing away any would-be attackers.Due to the effectiveness and power of these jutsu, teaching of the ability is restricted to only members of the main branch of the Hyuga clan, though prodigious Gentle Fist style users can replicate the same effects without being taught. Both Neji Hyuga and Hinata Hyuga use the fundamentals of these attacks to create their own unique jutsu.
Mind Body Switch Technique
The Mind Body Switch Technique (心転身の術, Shintenshin no Jutsu?, Viz "Art of the Valentine", English TV "Mind Transfer Jutsu") is the signature ability of the Yamanaka clan. With it, the user sends their mind into a target's body (human or animal), supplanting the target's mind with their own. Though normally used as a spying jutsu, it can also be used in battle with several major drawbacks. First, the user's spirit travels slowly, making it easy to dodge. If the user misses their target, they are left helpless until their spirit returns to their body, which takes several minutes. Second, even if the technique does work, the user's ability to stay in an enemy's body is determined by how fatigued they are. The user can be forced out if facing a strong enough will, are too tired, or if the target is in incredible pain. Finally, any damage the user suffers while possessing another is transferred to their original body. Therefore, if the target dies, so does the user.
Once the Mind Body Switch Technique has been mastered, a Yamanaka is entitled to learn the Mind Body Disturbance Technique (心乱身の術, Shinranshin no Jutsu?). Rather than transfer the user's consciousness to another's body, this jutsu sends a spirit of confusion into a target, causing them to attack their allies. Although the target is aware of what they are doing, they are unable to stop themselves. For this particular jutsu, the user is able to stay in their own body, unlike its predecessor; however, the user must maintain the hand seal used to activate it.
IGN, a popular multimedia and reviews website, ranks Mind Body Switch Technique in the 5th spot of the Top Ten Naruto Techniques mentioning that the jutsu comes with a long list of disclaimers and hazards though. Still, they say it's definitely worth the risk.
The Mokuton (木遁, Mokuton? literally "Wood Release" English "Wood Style") jutsu are techniques that combine earth and water-based chakra to create plants, specifically trees of varying size and shape. Mokuton techniques can be produced from anywhere, including the user's body, as the user's chakra is literally converted into a source of life. The First Hokage was the originator of this ability, evidenced by the fact that none of his relatives have been shown capable of using Mokuton. The First's ability to use Mokuton was the reason for his being given the title of Hokage, and with his abilities he was able to grow the trees that served as the foundation of Konohagakure. After the First's death, Yamato is injected with the First's DNA in an attempt to replicate the ability. Yamato survives the experiment and is the only known living user of Mokuton.
Because Yamato is the only current owner of the Mokuton ability, many of its associated jutsu have been exclusively used by him. With the Wood Clone Technique (木分身の術, Moku Bunshin no Jutsu?), Yamato can create a copy of himself made of wood to carry out tasks he is unable to do at the moment. He can also perform Wood Locking Wall (木錠壁, Moku Jōheki?) to create a half-dome used either to block attacks or capture others. Other uses for Mokuton include creating wooden cages, making houses and tracking purposes using a seed that is tuned to Yamato's chakra. A possibly unrelated technique, but unique to the First and Yamato, is the ability to suppress a tailed beast's influence over its host. This is done by producing wooden dragons from the ground that attach to the host and force the tailed beast's chakra to recede. The First Hokage's crystal necklace aids in this technique's execution, but its exact role is unclear.
In Accel 2, Yamato employs other Mokuton techniques for offensive purposes.
Mystical Palm Technique
The most basic of medical jutsu is the Mystical Palm Technique (掌仙術, Shōsen Jutsu?), a multipurpose technique that can heal wounds and perform surgery. To heal with the ability, users collect chakra to their hand to speed up cell regeneration wherever it is applied.For the latter, the user focuses their chakra into a blade to make cuts where necessary, though because the blade is made of chakra the flesh is never cut. This aspect of the ability can be used in combat, though it requires great precision to be effective.
The Multi-Size Technique (倍化の術, Baika no Jutsu?, Viz "The Art of Expansion", English TV: "Expansion Jutsu") is the signature ability of the Akimichi clan. The ability increases the user's body size (as well as their clothing) by using up their stored food energy, converting calories into chakra. Akimichi clan members tend to eat fattening foods and have large physiques in order to support this technique. The proportions that the user's body increases to seems to depend on the level of expertise; when Choji Akimichi performs this technique in Part I it causes him to take on a round appearance, yet his Part II counterpart as well as his father are able to use the technique to make themselves the size of buildings. Older Akimichi use further variants of this ability such as the Partial Multi-Size Technique (部分倍化の術, Bubun Baika no Jutsu?, English TV: "Partial Expansion Jutsu"), which allows them to increase the size of only parts of their body. Once an Akimichi has large enough chakra reserves they can also perform the Super Multi-Size Technique (超倍化の術, Chō Baika no Jutsu?, English TV: "Super Expansion Jutsu") to increase their body's size to gigantic proportions. Akimichi often used their increased size to perform other jutsu, taking advantage of their bigger mass to make their attacks more potent.
Orochimaru's cursed seals
A large array of cursed seal level 2 transformationsOrochimaru's cursed seals were first developed through his experimentations on Jugo. Jugo's body naturally produces an enzyme that transforms the user into any number of different forms, drastically increasing their chakra supply in the process. By extracting this enzyme from Jugo's body and refining it, Orochimaru is able to apply it to whichever of his followers he wishes.
Once the cursed seal is applied, the applicant stands a 10% chance of survival and they lose consciousness as their body accepts or rejects the seal. Should they survive, receivers of the cursed seal are given access to the seal's first level. When activated the seal's unique pattern spreads across their body from the point of application; the more body coverage there is, the more the user is drawing upon the seal's effects. The seal forcibly draws chakra from the user's body and grants them with increased physical abilities, though consequently leaving them exhausted once the seal is deactivated. Their mind slowly corrodes while the seal is active, opening up to Orochimaru's influence and simultaneously advancing the seal to its second state.
Advancement to the level two of the cursed seal is a long process, so long in fact that Orochimaru developed a special drug to speed up the process. Once level two is achieved, the user can enter the state by fully covering their body with the cursed seal. This is followed by an unnatural alteration of the user's body, with the only common features being yellow eyes with a black sclera. Aside from the first and second levels of the seal, skilled users of the seal are able to perform partial transformations in which the aforementioned mutation caused to the users body in the level two state can be used without completely altering the entire body. The power of the cursed seal can even synchronize with the user's regular body with extended use, increasing the power of his/her natural state.
The Puppet Technique (傀儡の術, Kugutsu no Jutsu?, Viz "Art of the Puppet Master", English TV "Puppet Master Jutsu") was created in order to convert a form of entertainment into a style of combat. The technique utilizes strings of chakra extending from the user's fingers to control a puppet's movements. Those who can effectively use this ability are rare, but once mastered the user can hide in a safe location while his puppet does the work for him. Skilled puppeteers are able to manipulate multiple puppets simultaneously, with Chiyo being able to use each of her ten fingers to control a different puppet. These chakra strings also allow puppeteers to manipulate other people or objects, controlling their movements to help or hinder their progress in battle.
The art of puppetry varies in usage from person to person, as puppets can be equipped with an array of different weapons and tools to make a battle easier. Puppeteers can also combine the abilities of their puppets to increase their effectiveness; Kankuro, for example, can use one of his puppets to capture an enemy while a second bombards them with weapons, killing them. Standard puppets, however, are limited to attacks not dependent on chakra, as soulless beings cannot utilize it. Sasori has created a workaround for this shortcoming by converting the body of a still-living person into a puppet. Because they were once human, these puppets are able to perform jutsu, giving them a drastic advantage over other puppets.
Naruto using the RasenganThe Rasengan (螺旋丸, literally "Spiraling Sphere", Viz "Spiral Chakra Sphere") is a technique invented by the Fourth Hokage after three years of development. It requires no hand signs to perform, instead relying entirely on the chakra control of the user. The Rasengan grinds into whatever it touches, causing major damage as well as significant internal injury. If need be the potency of the attack can be lessened to keep from harming the target.
The level of chakra control required is very high, and because of this the teaching of this jutsu is split into three steps. The first, emphasizing rotation, has the user learn to pop a water balloon by spinning the water inside in multiple directions with their chakra. The second step, emphasizing power, requires the same be done with a solid rubber ball, forcing the user to rely on denser amounts of chakra to permeate the air within and break it. The final step, emphasizing control, has the user form a complete Rasengan by combining what they learned in the previous two steps and making a ball shape shell around the spinning chakra to hold it in regular shape. A regular balloon is often used to train making the shell. Minato taught the Rasengan to his student Kakashi Hatake, and his former teacher Jiraiya who in turn teaches it to Naruto Uzumaki.
While most users of this jutsu are skilled enough to perform it with one hand, Naruto uses three or more hands with the aid of a shadow clone – one hand to supply chakra and the others to spin and shape it. The use of shadow clones was originally a workaround that allowed him to master this high-level technique successfully and in a very short amount of time. He continues to use them ever since, since shadow clones are almost effortless for him to create and allow him to lessen the concentration required.
The Rasengan was created as the ultimate example of chakra form manipulation. However, Minato had intended to combine it with nature manipulation, which proved to be as impossible as "looking left and right at the same time". Minato and Kakashi have both been unsuccessful in the attempt. In Part II, Naruto finally accomplishes the feat by using two shadow clones – one to manipulate form, one to manipulate nature to infuse the Rasengan with his own wind-based chakra, and even goes on to create variants of the jutsu.
During each of the Naruto movies, Naruto mixes his Rasengan with a form of energy unique to the movie, creating a new, stronger variant of the jutsu. In the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja series, Jiraiya and Naruto can create many variations of the Rasengan.
IGN, a popular multimedia and reviews website, calls mentions the Rasengan as the best jutsu in the series mentioning it is it worth the effort to perform it focusing on its spinning effect. The Rasengan has ranked 1st in every official Shonen Jump popularity jutsu polls.
The Sexy Technique (おいろけの術, Oiroke no Jutsu?, Viz "Ninja Centerfold", UK DVD "Art of Eros", English TV "Sexy Jutsu"), created by Naruto Uzumaki, transforms the user into a beautiful, nude woman. Naruto uses it to distract or persuade whoever may be bothering him, sometimes leading to an exaggerated nosebleed by the victim. Naruto and his brief disciple, Konohamaru, create variants of the technique that include utilizing shadow clones to increase the number of nude individuals with which to distract others.
In some video games the effect of this technique depends on the opponent Naruto is fighting. Kakashi Hatake and Sasuke Uchiha employ their versions of this technique by copying it with their Sharingan in the first game of the Ultimate Ninja series.
Shadow Clone Technique
Naruto using the Shadow Clone TechniqueThe Shadow Clone Technique (影分身の術, Kage Bunshin no Jutsu?, Viz "Art of the Shadow Doppelganger", UK DVD "Art of Shadow Body Splitting", English TV "Shadow Clone Jutsu") creates actual copies, not illusions, of the user with whatever damage and weapons the original may have. The user's chakra can be evenly distributed among every clone, giving each clone a fraction of the user's overall power. Because of this, the technique itself is considered dangerous; when creating multiple copies of one's self it is possible to use up all of one's chakra fairly quickly. This is considerably more dangerous with the jutsu's forbidden form, the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique (多重影分身の術, Tajū Kage Bunshin no Jutsu?, English TV "Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu"). While the standard Shadow Clone Technique typically creates no more than five clones, the Multiple version allows the creation of a limitless number of clones so long as the user has enough chakra. Due to the danger of the ability it is typically used by only the most advanced ninja, often at or above Jonin rank, such as Kakashi Hatake. Naruto Uzumaki, however, learned the technique prior to even becoming a ninja, and thanks to the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox he can use it to create thousands of clones and never worry about running out of chakra.
Any experience the shadow clones gain during their existence is transferred to the user once they are dispersed (occurs at the clones discretion or after it receives a fatal or solid blow). This makes the technique ideal for spying, since the user can simply send a clone to spy on a target and then have the clone disperse itself to quickly pass the information back to the user. It's also useful for training purposes, since the total amount of experience the user gains is multiplied by the total number of clones being used to train. Using it in this manner is far more difficult, however, since a large number of clones are needed to make a significant difference in the training time. Likewise, depending on how many clones are used for this purpose, the user can be overcome by the amount of information communicated to them with the clones' dispersion. Although Naruto has found a number of different uses for clones, he does not become aware of this added effect until he is actually told of it. Itachi Uchiha is able to create clones that explode on command.
IGN, a popular multimedia and reviews website, although ranking this jutsu at 9th in the Top Ten Naruto Techniques, they talk about it as a very useful jutsu.
In an interview, Maile Flanagan, the voice actress for Naruto in the English anime, states that the cloning scenes are her favorite scenes to make dialogues.
Shadow Imitation Technique
Shadow Imitation Technique against multiple victimsThe Shadow Imitation Technique (影真似の術, Kagemane no Jutsu?, English "Shadow Possession Jutsu") is the signature technique of the Nara clan. This jutsu allows the user to control their own shadow and merge it with their opponent's shadow, combining them. This links the movements of the user with the target (both conscious and unconscious); the target is subsequently forced to make any movement the user makes. On the other hand, the user also mimics any movements that the target is forced to make, such as recoil from being punched. It is an extremely versatile technique as the user can contract and change the shape of their shadow, potentially grabbing multiple targets at once. The degree to which the user's shadow can be stretched is limited by its total surface area; by using the shadows of other objects, the user can extend their shadow beyond its normal range. The amount of time for which an opponent can be held is limited by the user's chakra, since the user must constantly maintain the jutsu. The jutsu is also more difficult to maintain at greater ranges or for multiple opponents, since the user's shadow must be stretched constantly. The target can force their way free with enough effort, though the amount of effort required to do so is considerable.
The Shadow Imitation Technique used to be called the Shadow Bind Technique (影縛りの術, Kage Shibari no Jutsu?, English TV "Shadow Paralysis Jutsu"), suggesting that the imitation aspect was devised later on and that the original technique could only hold targets in place. Older members of the Nara clan use the former name of the technique when performing it.
Those who have mastered the Shadow Imitation Technique are then allowed to learn the Shadow Neck Bind Technique (影首縛りの術, Kage Kubi Shibari no Jutsu?, English TV "Shadow Strangle Jutsu"). After capturing an opponent with their shadow, the user can then further extend their shadow up to the target's throat in the shape of a hand, which chokes them to death. Additionally, it can be used to bind the limbs of exceptionally strong targets who can move, even while bound by the Shadow Imitation. The technique has been described as the feeling of an actual arm binding them in place and while under attack from the Shadow Neck Bind, the effects of Shadow Imitation are nullified. It has been noted to have a stronger hold on a target when they are nearer to the user. Shikamaru Nara, after being taught the Shadow Neck Bind Technique, develops his own ways of manipulating his shadow, even going so far as to be able to separate it from surfaces and directly interact with others.
In Naruto: Ultimate Ninja series, Shikamaru Nara performs another variations of these techniques that create shadows solid-forms for directly offensive purposes.
IGN, a popular multimedia and reviews website, ranks Shadow Imitation Technique in the 6th spot of the Top Ten Naruto Techniques mentioning it is useful because you can make others do your bidding, but it's not quite effective.
The Sharingan (写輪眼, Sharingan? literally "Copy Wheel Eye," English manga "Mirror Wheel Eye") is an eye technique ( 瞳術, dōjutsu?) that naturally occurs in a select few members of the Uchiha clan. The Sharingan is thought to be descended from the Byakugan, but grants the user different abilities and a different insight. The Sharingan does not automatically appear from birth in a user; instead, it will usually appear when the user is in a life-threatening situation, where the power of the Sharingan could save them. After this first appearance, the user can then call up the Sharingan any time they wish. The power of the Sharingan is judged through the number of tomoe in the eye, with a maximum of three in each. The characters who currently possess the Sharingan include Sasuke Uchiha, Itachi Uchiha, Kakashi Hatake, and Tobi.
The Sharingan's first and most well known ability is to memorize any technique that it witnesses. It can memorize any standard form of jutsu with perfect accuracy, allowing the user to use the techniques as his own. In order to reproduce copied jutsu, however, one must have the necessary skill or ability to perform them. A prime example is Rock Lee's Strong Fist taijutsu. While Sasuke was able to copy some of Lee's moves, they put a much more significant strain on him since he hasn't had the same training as Lee has.
The Sharingan second ability is granting the user incredible clarity of perception, allowing them to track fast-moving objects with ease and even predict the subsequent movements of those objects. The ability to track and predict movement is largely based on individual skill, as unskilled users have much more trouble tracking fast-moving objects. A fully-evolved Sharingan eye can track even the quickest opponents, even if the user can't move at the same speed. This perception is also great enough to see through genjutsu and to observe the movement and flow of chakra, but not to the same extent or clarity as the Byakugan. Additionally, the Sharingan grants the user exceptional analytical powers, allowing them to instinctively pick up on various visual clues with little difficulty. For example, Sasuke was able to reproduce answers on another person's test by watching their pencil movements during the Chunin Exam.
The Sharingan's third capability is a unique brand of hypnosis that involves suggesting actions and thoughts to the opponent. When used in conjunction with the aforementioned aspects of the Sharingan, this allows the user to perfectly mimic every move their opponent makes, even before they do, making it appear as if the user can see the future. It also allows for other forms of hypnotism, such as putting an opponent to sleep, relaying memories to someone else, or creating various illusions to fool an opponent.
It is possible to transplant Sharingan eyes from one person to another, as occurred with Kakashi and his deceased comrade Obito Uchiha. However, transplanted eyes do not work as well in a non-Uchiha body; Kakashi's eye is always active, causing him great strain when he uses it and forcing him to recuperate for extended periods of time after a battle. Kakashi keeps it covered when not using it to avoid this side effect in his everyday activities. Uchiha clan members are not burdened with this weakness; while activation of the Sharingan does consume chakra, the drain is so small as to be almost insignificant. Itachi in particular seems to have no trouble keeping his Sharingan activated near-constantly.
IGN, a popular multimedia and reviews website, calls the Sharingan as one of the best abilities that a ninja could have, but isn't very original due to its main power being imitation.
The Mangekyo Sharingan (万華鏡写輪眼, Mangekyō Sharingan?, literally "Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye") is a heightened form of Sharingan. It was first awakened by Madara Uchiha, who was able to use it to gain control over the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox. Itachi Uchiha and Kakashi Hatake have since awakened their own Mangekyo Sharingan. Unlike the standard Sharingan, the Mangekyo Sharingan differs between users, changing the form of the Sharingan's tomoe seal when activated. Those who possess a Mangekyo Sharingan suffer from ever-deteriorating eyesight, a process that becomes faster through repeated usage, eventually leading to blindness.
Itachi tells his brother, Sasuke Uchiha, that the Mangekyo Sharingan can be gained by killing one's closest friend.Though Itachi does this to obtain his version, Kakashi is unlikely to have done the same; Kakashi states at the start of the series that all of his friends are dead, and it is not until the gap in time between Part I and II that he develops his own. What Kakashi did to obtain his own Mangekyo Sharingan remains unknown.
The Strong Fist (剛拳, Gōken?, Viz "Ferocious Fist", English TV "Ferocious Fist Taijutsu Style") style is Might Guy and Rock Lee's characteristic fighting style, the purpose of which is to cause external damage and break bones.Additionally, they have learned to open the eight chakra gates, allowing them to briefly increase their physical limits in exchange for severe physical damage after the effects have worn off. Sasuke Uchiha and Kakashi Hatake have copied this style with their Sharingan to limited degrees, and each uses a few of the style's attacks as part of other taijutsu.
The attacks that fall under the Strong Fist style almost exclusively deal with different methods of kicking the opponent. Leaf Whirlwind (木ノ葉旋風, Konoha Senpū?, Viz "Konoha Hurricane", English TV "Leaf Hurricane"), one of the most basic, used to perform a spinning kick. This technique has some variations like Leaf Great Whirlwind (木ノ葉大旋風, Konoha Daisenpū?, English TV "Leaf Hurricane") and the more powerful Leaf Strong Whirlwind (木ノ葉剛力旋風, Konoha Gōriki Senpū?, English TV "Severe Leaf Hurricane", Ultimate Ninja 2: "Devastating Leaf Hurricane") that are double spinning kicks, the second being meant to worsen the damage of the first. Dynamic Entry (ダイナミック・エントリー, Dainamikku-Entorī?) and Dynamic Action (ダイナミック・アクション, Dainamikku-Akushyon?) are a flying kick and punch, respectively, meant to be used on distracted opponents. The Leaf Gale (木ノ葉烈風, Konoha Reppū?, English TV "Leaf Whirlwind") is a spinning kick to sweep opponents off their feet, while Leaf Rising Wind (木ノ葉昇風, Konoha Shōfū?) is a simple upper kick that can be used to disarm opponents. With Shadow of the Dancing Leaf (影舞葉, Kage Buyō?, English TV "Dancing Leaf Shadow") the user kicks the opponent into the air, allowing the user to trap the airborne opponent for further damage.
Summons are typically called forth in a puff of smoke with the Summoning Technique (口寄せの術, Kuchiyose no Jutsu?, Viz "Shinobi Conjuration", English TV: "Summoning Jutsu"), or any number of variations thereof. Before a summoning can be performed, the user sometimes signs a contract with their own blood, each contract differing depending on what creature is to be summoned or if they need it at all. The summoner performs the proper hand seals and with additional blood on either the summoning scroll or symbols etched into the ground, walls, trees etc. to then perform the summoning jutsu. The amount of chakra offered at this time is directly proportionate to the size of the summoned creature, making summons such as Gamabunta a Kage-level feat. Summons have their own abilities that they can use by themselves or in conjunction with the summoner. Some summons are so powerful or they may simply not respect the summoner so that they may even challenge the summoner, or will demand something in order to contribute to the reason for their summon.
Weapons can be called forth in a similar fashion with Projectile Weapons (飛道具, Tobidōgu?). Unlike the summoning of creatures, which are brought from their place of residence to serve the summoner, weapons are generally contained within the summoning scroll. Summoning scrolls often contain weapons that would be cumbersome to carry for their owner, either due to the weapon's size or the sheer volume of different weapons. Like almost all Summoning Techniques, a donation of blood is required to summon said items.
Water-based techniques are commonly used by ninja from Kirigakure such as Zabuza Momochi; Kakashi Hatake, having fought a number of Kirigakure ninja before, is also able to use a few water techniques. Most abilities that utilize water require a preexisting source in order to be performed, such as a lake or a puddle. Kisame Hoshigaki and the Second Hokage, however, are able to create their own bodies of water with which to perform jutsu. One of the few exceptions to this rule is the Water Release: Water Encampment Wall (水遁・水陣壁, Suiton: Suijinheki?, English TV "Water Style: Water Wall"), which allows users to spit protective walls of water from their mouth to block attacks, though they can use other water sources if available.
The more common of water-abilities is the Water Clone Technique (水分身の術, Mizu Bunshin no Jutsu?), which creates copies of the user that can join them in battle. The clones must stay in range of the user in order to remain active, allowing opponents to easily escape them by running a short distance away. The Water Prison Technique (水牢の術, Suirō no Jutsu?) is equally common amongst Kirigakure ninja; with it they can trap opponents inside a virtually inescapable sphere of water. Because users must keep an arm inside the sphere in order for the opponent to remain imprisoned, water clones are often created for the sole purpose of performing and maintaining the jutsu. When Tenten is contained within one of these prisons she claims she cannot breathe, but other characters have displayed the ability to remain within it for long periods of time and are even capable of speaking, although Kakashi is said to be slowly drowning while imprisoned.
Offensive water jutsu predominately deal with sending large amounts of water at opponents. These bodies of water are often shaped into different forms to allow more control or precision. The earliest example of such an ability is the Water Release: Water Dragon Blast Technique (水遁・水龍弾の術, Suiton: Suiryūdan no Jutsu?, Viz "Water Release: Water Dragon Missile", English TV "Water Style: Water Dragon Jutsu"), which forms water into the shape of a dragon to attack others
~~~~~Land of Wind Info
The Land of Wind (風の国, Kaze no Kuni?), one of the Five Great Shinobi Nations, is a large, dry, and desolate country whose cities are typically found near water sources. While much of the country is inhospitable, the population is large and prosperous due to its frequent trading with the Land of Fire. While not seen as often as the Land of Fire, the Land of Wind receives a great deal of attention in the series, and has a great many powerful ninja to call its own. Its hidden village is Sunagakure, Village Hidden in the Sand. The Land of Wind has been relatively uninvolved with politics until recent times, and even had a peace treaty signed with the Land of Fire. The lord ruling it, however, had been systematically cutting down his military force and transferring missions he would normally address to his own country's hidden village to Konohagakure, prompting desperate measures on the part of the Kazekage at the time.
SunagakureSunagakure (砂隠れの里, Sunagakure no Sato?, literally "Village Hidden Among Sand" or "Village Hidden in the Sand") is one of the five great ninja villages, and as such has a Kage, known as the Kazekage, as its leader. The symbol on their headband is of an hourglass. The one-tailed Shukaku was said to originate here, having been created from the spirit of a dead monk who was trapped in a teakettle. With its military forces being scaled down by the Land of Wind's feudal lord, the Fourth Kazekage realized that they had to increase the quality of each ninja to maintain a military force. Gaara is just one result of that.
As more time passed, the lord started commissioning Konoha with requests he should have been making to Sunagakure. On top of that, he began cutting back on Sunagakure's budget. The Fourth Kazekage realized that if he didn't act quickly, Sunagakure would be in danger of disappearing, so he joined forces with Otogakure in an attempt to destroy Konoha and force the lord to re-establish Sunagakure's military force if he wished for his country to continue existing. With the failure of the attack and the death of the Fourth Kazekage caused by the betrayal of Otogakure, Sunagakure re-allied with Konoha, and Gaara, Temari and Kankuro assisted Konoha during the mission to retrieve Sasuke. Gaara eventually became the Fifth Kazekage.
The tailed beasts (尾獣, bijū?) are giant demons that serve to drive the plot of the Naruto series. Each revealed tailed beast is around the size of Gamabunta, who is over 100 meters tall. They are differentiated by the number of tails they have, with each possessing an amount from one to nine. The tailed beasts are also known for possessing the "ultimate chakra", as they have chakra levels far beyond what most of the human characters possess. However, this immense strength is tempered due to their bestial nature, which restricts some of them from being smart enough to use it effectively. For example, the three-tailed beast was unsealed when it first appears in the manga, and is thus easily defeated by Deidara and Tobi. Beasts sealed within another person are able to benefit from the knowledge of their hosts, giving them the ability to speak and better utilize their powers.
Akatsuki is currently collecting the tailed beasts. They capture the hosts and take them to a secret location where a three day long jutsu is performed to draw out the tailed beast from the host. They possess seven of the nine tailed beasts: Shukaku, the one-tailed beast; the two-tailed demon cat; the three-tailed beast; the four-tailed beast; and three other unknown beasts. All seven of these tailed beasts have been extracted and sealed. Pain claims that when all nine beasts are sealed, he will be able to create a jutsu powerful enough to instantly wipe out a country.
Those within whom a tailed beast has been sealed are called Jinchūriki (人柱力, lit. Power of Human Sacrifice, English "Spiritualist Medium"), or simply hosts. In most instances, they are actually stronger than the tailed beast they contain, as they have the knowledge to effectively control the tailed beast's strength. Each of the hosts that have appeared so far within the series also possesses a physical characteristic that resembles their beast — Naruto has fox-like whisker-marks, and Gaara has tanuki-like rings around his eyes. According to Akatsuki members, those who host such creatures are typically lonely people who loathe humanity, and so far this has initially been the case. When Akatsuki captured their first two jinchūriki, no one from their villages cared, and in fact were thankful to be rid of them. It is also known that the death of a host will result in the death of the tailed beast within, and the hosts seen thus far sometimes exhibit involuntary defensive powers, such as Gaara's sand shield. Likewise, the removal of the tailed beast results in the death of its host. Naruto takes the word jinchūriki offensively, regarding it as a dehumanizing term. During the Great Shinobi Wars, each country's Hidden Village tried to make use of the tailed beasts for military purposes, and competed for them. However, no one was ever able to truly bring the tailed beasts under control, with the jinchūriki being only a marginal success.
Akatsuki, at any given point in time, is composed of no more than ten primary members. All known members have betrayed their village they grew up in and are the most wanted and dangerous individuals in the series.
Members of Akatsuki usually work in teams of two. Teams are built to complement each other's abilities and talents to create a formidable duo. Members whose partners have died also operate by themselves until a replacement can be found. At the very least, members maintain a functioning working relationship with their partner, with some form of loyalty to one another being present in most cases. In other instances a member will only work with their teammate so long as it furthers Akatsuki's goals, with all other matters being a source of dispute between the two. In general, Akatsuki members are unconcerned with the fate of their other comrades, their only point of interest concerning someone's death being who was strong enough to kill them.
Akatsuki is a widespread organization, with its members constantly traveling between countries and its agents operating out of various villages throughout the world.Because the various members are often so far apart, making a meeting in person impractical, they can communicate through a form of telepathy. If there is a need for the group to have more of an interaction with each other, members can use a form of astral projection to meet at one of Akatsuki's many secret lairs. Their meetings are much more frequent in the second part of the series due to their increased activity.
Akatsuki members dress in similar clothing: a long, dark cloak bearing red clouds and a red interior with a chin-high collar. All members also wear nail polish of varying colors on their fingernails and toenails. When starting a mission they wear large conical straw hats with small spike-like bells hanging from them to block their faces, but the hats are discarded once they have been discovered. In addition to this more standard wardrobe, some members continue to wear forehead protectors from their former home villages, but scratch a line across their village's symbol. This is done to indicate that their ties to the village have been severed and they no longer give allegiance to their former homes. Each Akatsuki member also wears a single, unique ring, and no two members wear a ring on the same finger. In total, there are ten rings, and each seems to have some special significance. Each ring bears a unique symbol, the first kanji of its name.
The various rings are:
Right thumb: 零 rei, "zero"; worn by Pain.
Right index finger: 青龍 Seiryū, the Azure Dragon; worn by Deidara.
Right middle finger: 白虎 Byakko, the White Tiger; worn by Konan.
Right ring finger: 朱雀 Suzaku, the Vermilion Bird; worn by Itachi Uchiha.
Right little finger: 玄武 Genbu, the Black Tortoise; worn by Zetsu.
Left little finger: 空陳 Kūchin, the Void; formerly worn by Orochimaru.
Left ring finger: 南斗 Nanju, Sagittarius (lit. Southern Star); worn by Kisame Hoshigaki.
Left middle finger: 北斗 Hokuto, the Big Dipper (lit. Northern Star); worn by Kakuzu.
Left index finger: 三台 santai, "three levels"; worn by Hidan.
Left thumb: 玉女 gyokunyo, the Virgin; currently worn by Tobi, formerly worn by Sasori.
Akatsuki initially operate in the shadows, carrying out assassinations and espionage that draw little attention. Some members use their time with Akatsuki to further their own goals; Kakuzu, for example, joined because it makes it easier for him to collect bounties. Soon after the start of the series, however, Akatsuki becomes increasingly more active as its members start to carry out the tasks needed to achieve their ultimate goal: domination over the Naruto world. The leader, Pain, has created a three-step process to work their way towards this goal. First, they plan to obtain a large amount of money to support their organization. Second, they plan to set up a mercenary group loyal only to Akatsuki. To build their reputation, they plan to accept any mission below the usual cost and operate off of the excess funds earned in the first part of their plan. Because there haven't been any wars in some time, the established shinobi villages can't afford to charge such low prices, leading the smaller countries to hire Akatsuki over the more expensive shinobi villages. By using the tailed beasts, Akatsuki can start wars and then immediately quell them, solidifying their reputation and convincing every country to depend on them. Without any business, the other shinobi villages would collapse due to a lack of funds. Finally, after Akatsuki is the only major shinobi force in existence, they could easily conquer the other countries. Despite the severity of this plan, members do not automatically learn of it upon joining; Hidan did not find out about it until asking.
The tailed beasts, nine gigantic demons of immense power, are the focus of much of Akatsuki's effort and screen time within the series. Each Akatsuki member is assigned to capture alive one of the nine beasts or, in most cases, the person that beast has been sealed into. Akatsuki has so far obtained seven of the nine: the One-Tailed Shukaku, the Two-Tailed Demon Cat, the three-tailed beast, the four-tailed beast, and three others.
The Akatsuki members in their respective positions on the sealing statueOnce one of the demons has been captured it is taken to the nearest Akatsuki lair where the remaining members then assemble through astral projection. Pain summons a giant statue of a humanoid monster while the beast or its host is placed before it. The members then take their place on the finger of the statue that corresponds to their respective ring, and the group prepares to seal the beast into the statue. For the sealing, nine dragon-like effigies pour from the statue's mouth to surround the captured host, forcefully remove the tailed beast from them, and seal it into the statue. In the case of an unsealed tailed beast, the same thing happens to the beast itself. The sealing process takes three days to complete. Kisame Hoshigaki notes that the demons must be sealed in a specific order, as he states that sealing the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox before the other eight beasts would destroy the statue. Tobi, the character shown giving Pain orders, hints that the tailed beasts have a purpose beyond global conquest, implying that acquiring all nine would allow his Sharingan to return to full power. Pain, however, has different plans on using the tailed beasts, wishing to use them to create a weapon of mass destruction that will force the world to learn the pointlessness of fighting and try to achieve a sense of world peace.
Age: 17-18 in Part I
Partner: Kisame Hoshigaki
Seiyu: Hideo Ishikawa
Voice actor: Skip Stellrecht (Episodes 29-30), Crispin Freeman (Episodes 80+)
Itachi Uchiha (うちは イタチ, Uchiha Itachi?) is a missing-nin from Konohagakure and is partnered with Kisame Hoshigaki. During his time in Konoha, Itachi's prodigious talents and rapid development into a skilled ninja earned great attention from his family, the Uchiha clan. He eventually began to train under Madara Uchiha and in time killed his best friend, Shisui Uchiha, to gain the Mangekyo Sharingan. He soon joined forces with Madara in killing all living Uchiha except for his younger brother, Sasuke Uchiha. Believing Sasuke to be capable of someday surpassing him, Itachi spared him, encouraging his younger brother to get strong enough to avenge the clan. At some point in time Itachi joined Akatsuki. While it stands to reason that he joined after massacring the Uchiha, the timeline that has been given throughout the series coupled with his age suggests that he joined the organization prior to killing his clan.
Despite his status as a wanted criminal and murderer, Itachi does not display any open enjoyment in violence or combat. Itachi instead prefers to avoid battle or, if that is not possible, end it quickly while exerting as little effort as he can. When he does fight Itachi remains stationary, attacking only in defense and to otherwise avoid damage. He also studies an opponent's movements with his Sharingan eyes, using them to properly assess an opponent's actions and respond accordingly. With his Mangekyo Sharingan, Itachi can utilize attacks such as Tsukuyomi (月読, literally "Moon Reader"?), a genjutsu that can torture an opponent for what seems like days in a matter of moments. Although these abilities are capable of defeating even the strongest opponents, he suffers a worsening blindness as a result of repeated use. Itachi is also very adept with standard genjutsu, and can trap others within an illusion by merely pointing or looking at them, as well as turning their own genjutsu against them. He is also noted to be extremely fast with his techniques and movements, extending to his hand signs and weaponry as well.
Itachi is a popular character in the series, normally ranking in the Top Ten of the Shonen Jump popularity polls. However, in the latest poll he ranked 11th.
Age: 29 in Part I
Kisame Hoshigaki (干柿 鬼鮫, Hoshigaki Kisame?) is a missing-nin from Kirigakure and is partnere
partnered with Itachi Uchiha. He gets along considerably better with Itachi than most Akatsuki members do with their own partners, immediately doing as Itachi asks of him and always looking out for Itachi's well-being. His former country, the Land of Water, now seeks him out for plotting to overthrow its government and being involved in numerous assassinations. When he was still loyal to Kirigakure, he was one of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist, a group of ninja that wield particularly large weapons in battle. Kisame's weapon is called Samehada (鮫肌, "shark skin"), a scale-covered sword that shaves off skin instead of cutting and is capable of absorbing untold amounts of chakra. Samehada only allows Kisame to wield it; if anyone else tries to pick it up, spikes protrude from its handle and it returns to Kisame's side. Like other characters who have trained to be one of the Seven Swordsmen, Kisame enjoys mutilating his opponents, as seen when he suggests cutting off Naruto Uzumaki's legs to make him easier to carry.
Kisame has a distinctive shark-like appearance, complete with pale blue skin, small white eyes, gill-like facial structures, and sharp triangular teeth. Even his name, Kisame (鬼鮫), means "demon shark". His shark-like qualities carry over to the type of techniques he uses in battle, as he often shapes bodies of water into the forms of sharks that proceed to attack opponents. If there is no water source where he happens to be fighting, Kisame can use Water Release: Exploding Water Shockwave (水遁・爆水衝波, Suiton: Bakusui Shōha?) to create a lake's worth of water to be used for attacks. Kisame is also noted to have a particularly large reserve of chakra; even when he fights at 30% power in one instance his chakra supply is compared to that of a Nine-Tailed Demon Fox-enhanced Naruto Uzumaki.
Konan (小南, Konan?) is the only female ninja in Akatsuki. She is also the only member to call her partner and the Akatsuki leader, Pain, by his name. When she was younger, Konan, Nagato, and Yahiko were left orphaned by one of Amegakure's many wars, forcing them to fend for themselves. The three eventually encountered Jiraiya, who looked after them and taught them basic ninjutsu. Jiraiya had believed Konan to have died with Nagato and Yahiko some time later.
Konan has a natural talent for origami, as seen with the paper flower she keeps in her hair. This talent extends to her type of jutsu, as she can divide her body into countless numbers of paper sheets. These sheets can be controlled individually and formed into various shapes for a number of purposes, such as butterflies for scouting or generic weapons for attack. Konan can even form wings that mirror her title as "God's Angel" amongst the villagers of Amegakure, as she often carries out Pain's will. Her abilities are constrained while wet, as paper clings to itself and loses its stiffness.
The Six Paths of Pain
Pain (ペイン, Pein?) is the leader of Akatsuki. He exists as six different bodies which share the same mind, known collectively as The Six Paths of Pain (ペイン六道, Pein Rikudō?). The only common physical characteristics amongst them are their orange hair color, a number of piercings that differ between bodies, and the Rinnegan ( 輪廻眼, Rinnegan? literally "Samsara Eye"). The Rinnegan, first possessed by the founder of the ninja world and characterized by a number of concentric circles around the pupil, allows the wielder to perform any jutsu and manipulate all six types of chakra-nature manipulation. It also allows the six bodies to share visual information seamlessly, giving him the ability to coordinate offense and defense of all six as if they were a single entity. Each of the six entities that are Pain were ninja that Jiraiya encountered as he wandered the world. The first body that is seen (third from the right) is that of Yahiko, and is able to control rain and can detect the movements and chakra levels of people traveling within it. The body with a large ponytail (pictured on the far left) can summon a wide array of creatures as well as the other five Pains. The fat body (far right) is able to absorb ninjutsu as a form of defense. The bald body (third from the left) has displayed the ability to fire his left arm like a missile.
The first possessor of the Rinnegan that Jiraiya met was Nagato (長門) who, like Yahiko and Konan, was left orphaned by one of Amegakure's many wars. Once meeting the three, Jiraiya looked after them and taught them basic jutsu before leaving to continue his exploration of the world. Sometime after this, Nagato began to believe that his childhood sufferings had enlightened him, and started to view himself as a god destined to teach the world the meaninglessness of fighting. It is unknown what happened after this, but the Pain entity soon appeared in Amegakure and began a civil war with the government of the time. Pain subsequently ended the war by singlehandedly killing the village's leader, Hanzo. To make sure there were no sympathizers of Hanzo remaining in the village, Pain killed all of Hanzo's family, friends, and affiliates, elevating himself to god-like status amongst the townspeople in the process. Pain now uses the village as his base of operations for Akatsuki, where he is partnered with Konan. Although he directs the actions of the other members and maintains authority over them, Pain takes orders from Tobi.
Partner: None, formerly Deidara
Seiyu: Wataru Takagi
Tobi (トビ, Tobi?) is a former subordinate of Zetsu. After Sasori's death, Tobi takes his ring, position, and partner (Deidara) in Akatsuki, thereby becoming a full member. Tobi's personality is at odds with the standard amongst Akatsuki members; while most are dedicated and serious, Tobi is more carefree and goofy. These personality traits tend to irritate Deidara, who often attacks Tobi in a comical fashion whenever Tobi unintentionally annoys him. Kisame Hoshigaki, on the other hand, appreciates Tobi's ability to brighten up their "gloomy organization".
After Deidara's suicidal final attack against Sasuke, which Zetsu speculates might have also killed his partner, Tobi is shown to be alive and giving orders to Pain, until then the ostensible leader of Akatsuki. During their conversation, he refers to himself as Madara Uchiha. As Madara, Tobi's personality and speech become completely different, with much less formal diction and a more typically 'villainous' arrogance. It seems, however, that he still has some vested interest in maintaining the illusion of himself as the carefree Tobi, as he reverts to this personality upon encountering a group of Konoha ninja.
Tobi's actual appearance remains a complete mystery, except for a wild shock of black hair. He wears an odd mask that covers his entire face save for his right eye, which like other Uchiha has a Sharingan. He also has several bolts or pins present on the arms of his uniform, now obscured by his Akatsuki cloak. Furthermore, Tobi does not wear a visible headband, though Madara Uchiha is known to originate from Konohagakure. His fighting style is equally shrouded in mystery, as his only notable trait is the ability to let attacks pass through him and to withstand normally fatal blows.
Seiyu: Nobuo Tobita
Zetsu (ゼツ, Zetsu?) functions as a spy for Akatsuki, a role made easier by his ability to merge with anything and instantly travel to a new location. He has been shown able to move his body and take part in the tailed beast sealing ritual simultaneously which, in addition to being unique to him, allows him to act as a lookout while the sealing takes place. Because of the role he plays, Zetsu is the only member of Akatsuki to act without a partner on a regular basis. Despite this, Zetsu serves as a sort of superior to other members, as they often report directly to him instead of the actual leader, Pain.
Zetsu's head appears to be enveloped in a large venus flytrap, which can also envelop the rest of his body. Zetsu is cannibalistic, sent to devour the bodies Akatsuki does not want found. This, in addition to his other roles, gives him the function as Akatsuki's hunter-nin, something that is further exercised when he is sent to retrieve the rings of dead Akatsuki members. The right side of Zetsu's body and face is black in color while his left side is white. To go with this, Zetsu seems to have a split personality, as the black half of his face speaks only in Katakana while the white side uses Kanji and Kana. The two halves also seem to converse with each other, and occasionally differ in opinion.
Deidara (デイダラ, Deidara?) is a missing-nin from Iwagakure. Before joining Akatsuki, Deidara was as a terrorist bomber for hire, where his work attracted the attention of Pain. Pain sent other Akatsuki members to recruit Deidara, though he refused. After being defeated by Itachi Uchiha, however, Deidara was forced to join the organization. Deidara maintained a deep loathing for Itachi from that point further and became determined to defeat him, even training one of his eyes to overcome Itachi's signature ability: genjutsu. Deidara was partnered with Sasori upon joining the organization, whose artistic ability and insight Deidara admired. After Sasori's death Deidara is paired with Tobi whom he treats as a disciple. Despite Tobi's habit of accidentally angering Deidara, Deidara takes great care to keep Tobi out of harm's way and even dedicates his final moments to apologizing to him.
In battle, Deidara uses special mouths in the palm of each hand to create Exploding Clay (起爆粘土, Kibaku Nendo?), chakra-infused clay that explodes on command. He commonly uses the command "Katsu" (喝, "scold"?) to trigger it. The blast strength of his creations is determined by how much chakra he adds to them. His clay can take on any size or form, ranging from microscopic in size to copies of himself as tall as a skyscraper. Deidara refers to his creations as art, believing the most beautiful thing about them to be their detonation. His admiration for his art is such that he believes it can't be defeated, leading to overconfidence in battle. Depending on the complexity or potency of one of his works, Deidara applies it a designation from anywhere between "C1" to "C4", the former being the most basic and the latter being his strongest and most complex attack. For his final act, Deidara also has a mouth on his chest that, once provided with clay, turns him into a living bomb that destroys everything in a 10 kilometer radius. Deidara uses this as a last resort during his battle with Sasuke Uchiha, Itachi's younger brother, in an effort to prove his art is supreme.
Deidara is the most popular character of Akatsuki. In the sixth poll of the Shonen Jump he has ranked 3rd, even above Naruto Uzumaki.
Partner: Formerly Kakuzu
Hidan (飛段, Hidan?) is the foul-mouthed partner of Kakuzu and is the second newest member of Akatsuki at the time of his expulsion. Hidan belongs to the Jashin ("evil god") religion, a religion that worships a deity of the same name and where anything less than utter destruction is considered a sin. Before battles start, Hidan prays to Jashin and asks for nothing short of a kill or, when he is not allowed to kill his opponents, for forgiveness. After battles, should he have time, Hidan performs a thirty-minute ritual in accordance with his religion that culminates by stabbing himself in the chest while lying upon the ground. In addition to his religion Hidan has been gifted with immortality, and as such he is able to survive fatal injuries, such as decapitation. Despite this, Hidan needs to be connected to his body in order to control it. Kakuzu assists him in these instances by reattaching his limbs, allowing the wounds to heal with time. Hidan's inability to die is also used to Kakuzu's advantage, as he can attack Hidan all he wants without worrying about finding a new partner afterwards. Although the two dislike working together, this advantage makes them the ideal team.
During battle Hidan makes every attempt to acquire an opponent's blood where, upon consuming it, he draws a symbol on the ground that "links" him with his opponent. Once this link is created Hidan takes on a grim reaper-like appearance and becomes what is essentially a voodoo doll for his opponent; any damage that is done to Hidan is also done to them. Hidan first uses this ability to give himself nonfatal injuries that bring him pleasure due to the pain it causes to him and the opponent. Once he is done toying with opponents in this way he stabs himself in the heart, killing them. Links can be broken prematurely if Hidan is removed from the safety of his symbol, though it can easily be reestablished by simply reentering its borders. After Hidan uses this ability to kill Asuma Sarutobi, Shikamaru Nara faces him in an attempt to gain revenge. Hidan is unable to form a link with Shikamaru and eventually falls into one of Shikamaru's traps. With Hidan captured, Shikamaru blows him up and buries the still-speaking remains under a pile of rubble. While his actual status is currently unknown, Akatsuki no longer considers him a member.
Partner: Formerly Hidan
Kakuzu (角都, Kakuzu?) is a missing-nin from Takigakure and Hidan's partner. He is a greedy individual, prioritizing things in terms of how much they are worth and finding money to be the only thing that he can depend on. Kakuzu's favorite source of income is collecting bounties, and he has even memorized the worth and information on some of the more dangerous targets. Due to this view of money, Kakuzu refers to himself as the "Treasurer of Akatsuki", though it is unknown if this is an actual position. Despite finding Akatsuki to be a good source of income, Kakuzu greatly dislikes the fact that he needs a teammate, due in part to his habit of killing anyone near him (partners included) when enraged. Having killed all of his previous partners as a result of this, Kakuzu was partnered with Hidan. Although neither enjoys being paired together, Hidan's immortality makes him the ideal teammate for Kakuzu.
Kakuzu's body is composed of a great deal of thick black threads that he can use to detach his limbs for long-range assaults. The threads themselves are also capable of piercing flesh, which Kakuzu uses to remove the still-beating hearts from his enemies. By integrating these younger, healthier hearts into his body (being able to have a maximum of four spares at any given time), Kakuzu can theoretically extend his life indefinitely. He keeps these spare hearts stored within animal masks sewn to his back, and each of the masks can separate from his body and attack independently. Once removed from his body, the masks can shoot powerful elemental blasts at opponents. If the heart in Kakuzu's body is destroyed, one of the masks can remerge with him so that he can take use of its heart, causing the mask to crumble away. Kakuzu also has an earth-based defensive technique that makes him virtually immune to physical attacks. Kakuzu's masks are slowly destroyed at the hands of a group of Konohagakure ninja; Naruto Uzumaki is able to destroy two of his hearts simultaneously and bring a third to the brink of failure. Although Kakuzu survives Naruto's attack, he is left unable to move, allowing him to easily be finished off by Kakashi Hatake.
Main article: Orochimaru
Partner: Formerly Sasori
Orochimaru is a missing-nin from Konohagakure. After he defects from Konoha he joins Akatsuki and is paired with Sasori. Once Itachi Uchiha does the same, Orochimaru attempts to use one of his abilities to forcefully take control of Itachi's body. Itachi repels his effort and severs his hand as punishment, forcing Orochimaru to flee the organization in defeat. Upon leaving he takes his severed hand and the ring he wore on it with him. Because of this, as well as the fact that he had intimate knowledge of Akatsuki's secrets and plans, the members of Akatsuki began making every effort possible to find and eliminate him.
Partner: Formerly Deidara, Orochimaru before that
Seiyu: Takahiro Sakurai, Yutaka Aoyama (Hiruko), Akiko Yajima (as a child)
Sasori (サソリ, Sasori?) is a missing-nin from Sunagakure. After the death of his parents, Sasori was left in the care of his grandmother, Chiyo, who taught him all she knew about using puppets in battle. With his newfound knowledge he created puppets in his parents' likeness so that he could feel their love. Since they were only emotionless puppets, his attempt failed, and he left them behind upon leaving the village. Once joining Akatsuki he was paired with Orochimaru, and after Orochimaru's betrayal Sasori took it upon himself to track his movements and plot his destruction. Sasori would come to form a better working relationship with Deidara, as seen by Deidara's admiration of Sasori's abilities. Although the two have exact opposite views of art (Deidara preferring works that depart quickly and Sasori favoring long-lasting pieces), Deidara considers Sasori to be his master until the very end, even though Sasori never appreciated his ideals.
Sasori specializes in creating puppets out of the dead bodies of humans, which is done by removing its entrails and preserving it to prevent decomposition. Sasori is commonly seen with Hiruko (ヒルコ), a large puppet he wears like a suit so often that many characters can only recognize him while he is wearing it. For battle purposes he favors the puppet of the Third Kazekage, the leader of Sunagakure whom he killed prior to his defection. Because the Third was once a living person, the Third's unique abilities remain intact and Sasori can utilize them at his leisure. His most versatile human puppet, however, is himself, as he has long since converted his body into one. In addition to giving him an unnaturally young appearance, Sasori's puppet body allows him to control hundreds of puppets at once. Since he needs part of his original body to control puppets Sasori has preserved his heart in a cylinder-shaped device that he wears upon his chest. Sasori is able to survive any kind of attack so long as his heart remains undamaged, and he can even use it to switch to new bodies by simply placing the cylinder onto a new puppet. Every weapon that his puppets wield is also laced with a poison of Sasori's own design; the poison instantly numbs the body and kills the target after three days. Despite his large arsenal of weapons, Sasori is defeated after a prolonged battle with his grandmother and Sakura Haruno.
Although only appearing for a short time in the series, Sasori ranked 5th in the last Shonen Jump popularity poll.
Main article: Kabuto Yakushi
Kabuto Yakushi is a former spy for Sasori, forced into the position through a form of mind control. Kabuto was sent to gain Orochimaru's confidence and relay information back to Sasori, though Orochimaru was able to remove Sasori's mind control soon after they met. Kabuto is left with the option to swear allegiance to whomever he likes, and Kabuto picks Orochimaru over Akatsuki. Despite this, Kabuto continues to pretend to be Sasori's spy so as to gain information on Orochimaru's behalf.
Seiyu: Hideo Watanabe
Yura (由良, Yūra?) is a spy for Sasori who acts as a sleeper agent within Sunagakure. Before his assignment Yura's memories of being an Akatsuki member were wiped to prevent him revealing himself by accident. He is able to work his way into the Kazekage's advisory council, where he serves as a trusted member for four years. Once Sasori finds need of him his role as a subordinate of Akatsuki returns to him; he kills the Sunagakure ninja guarding the village's borders so that Sasori's partner, Deidara, can have safe passage into the village. He is later used as a sacrifice by Pain, the Akatsuki's leader, and becomes a copy of Itachi Uchiha, which is ultimately killed by Naruto Uzumaki.
The academy is where would-be ninja start; they are not actually considered ninja until they graduate. Academy students take formal and practical tests of all sorts and are taught basic ninja skills, such as martial arts, techniques, physical fitness and the way of the ninja. Basic weapon usage, such as kunai and shuriken, is commonly taught. Elementary ninja techniques, though they vary from village to village, are also taught. Some villages also have an additional test given by the Jounin sensei of each three-man squad to see if they are truly ready to graduate, which determines whether the squad can work as a team. To ensure that only truly qualified ninja are promoted, only three Genin teams are allowed to pass. The test for determining which three teams may become Genin are administered by each team's respective Jounin commander, and vary depending on the Jounin. What is required for graduation varies from academy to academy. In Konoha, the graduation exam is composed of some sort of written test, as well as demonstration of basic techniques, though Rock Lee is an exception.
Genin (下忍, Genin? literally "Low Ninja", Viz "Junior Ninja") are the lowest level of ninja. Because of this, skill levels vary drastically between Genin. Genin are put in four-man cells, consisting of three Genin and a Jonin sensei, in order to learn teamwork and experience true ninja life under the supervision and protection of an elite shinobi. The make-up of these teams is based on the individual skills of the Genin, so that there will remain a balance between the teams. When they become Genin, ninja start to do their bit for their village's economy, for which they are given a small payment. They are typically sent either on D-rank missions, which are the lowest rank and are almost entirely risk-free jobs of manual labor, or experienced genin are sent on C-rank missions, which are a cut above that and begin to verge on real "ninja" work, though they generally have a very low possibility of risk to the ninja involved.
Chunin (中忍, Chūnin?, literally "Middle Ninja", Viz "Chūnin" and "Journeyman Ninja") are ninja who are qualified to watch over and guide other ninja. Chunin have reached a level of maturity that primarily consists of leadership skills and tactical prowess. Some of them, like Iruka Umino, function as teachers and others, like Shikamaru Nara, serve as team leaders in charge of small teams who need to make decisions and utilize the skills of the shinobi under their command to the maximum effect. Upon reaching Chunin level, ninja can wear an identifying tactical vest that holds ninjutsu scrolls. This vest is not required; instead, some look for more elaborate clothing like capes or robes. Chunin are typically sent on C or B-rank missions.
To become a Chunin, a Genin participates, with his or her team, in a large examination, known as the "Chunin Exams," hosted twice a year due to the growing number of ninjas. In the past, each village held their own Chunin exam. After the 3rd Ninja World War, allied ninja villages agreed to hold the exams together at the selected village that would host the exam, so villages could improve and strengthen their relationships. Another advantage is that ninja that took the exam might attract clients who are interested in hiring them. The exam is a test not only of strength, but information gathering abilities, survival skills, and adhering to guidelines. Those who have all of these qualities are grouped together into predetermined fights, watched by a council that decides who becomes a Chunin and who does not. While the winners are able to proceed to fight the next opponent, aptitude, rather than winning, is evaluated to determine whether a candidate is promoted, so this way even one who loses his or her first match can become a Chunin.
Jonin (上忍, Jōnin?, literally "High Ninja", Viz "Elite Ninja") are generally highly-experienced ninja with great individual skill who serve as military captains. They are often sent on A-rank missions, and experienced Jonin may even be sent on S-rank missions (which are considered to be the most difficult), and may carry out missions alone. They are sometimes assigned as sensei for three-person teams of Genin. Though it is as of yet unknown what one has to undergo to become a Jonin, it is mentioned in the Naruto Anime Profiles that Jonin are appointed.[page # needed] Most Jonin are able to use at least two types of elemental jutsu, have some skills with genjutsu, and have at least above average taijutsu skills.
Tokubetsu Jonin (特別上忍, Tokubetsu Jōnin?, literally "Special High Ninja" English "Special Jonin", sometimes known as Tokujō for short) are ninja who, rather than all-around Jonin training, have Jonin-level ability in a single area or skill, much like warrant officers of real-world militaries. They are elite specialists in their areas and are often assigned as subordinates to regular Jonin when their services are needed.
Those who have achieved the title of Kage (影, Kage? literally "Shadow") are the leaders of the five most powerful Hidden Villages and generally the most powerful ninja in their respective villages. The Kage stand equally with the rulers of their countries, oversee the activities of their villages, and are the leaders of ninja society. There may be exceptions, however, as a ninja may be the most powerful at the time of being installed as Kage, but may become less powerful upon aging, eventually being surpassed by a more youthful ninja. A Kage may retire and give the title to someone else; the title, once granted, is held permanently, creating a case where there are two Kage at the same time, with only one of them actually active. Their elite status is also attributed to the tendency for most Kage to have family members who were previous Kage, or be personally taught by a former Kage or student of a former Kage, or some combination of these factors. The anime introduced a sixth Kage, the Hoshikage (星影, literally "Star Shadow"?) from Land of Bears. However, this was a self-given title and not officially recognized by the five other villages but the village didn't accept that. Most Kage tend to be at S-Rank level. The five Kage have different titles depending on their village. Those titles are:
Hokage (火影, literally "Fire Shadow"?) Kage of Konohagakure.
Kazekage (風影, literally "Wind Shadow"?) Kage of Sunagakure.
Mizukage (水影, literally "Water Shadow"?) Kage of Kirigakure.
Raikage (雷影, literally "Lightning Shadow"?) Kage of Kumogakure.
Tsuchikage (土影, literally "Earth Shadow"?) Kage of Iwagakure.
S-class ninja have gained power far beyond an average Jonin and earned a legendary status. This title is merely a class rather than an actual rank; the ninja's official rank with a village will usually still be Jonin. However, it can sometimes be lower, or they can have no rank at all. The allegiances of these ninja range from being part of the village's own ninja to being wandering ninja who are still loyal to their village. Some ninja of this level tend to leave their villages behind to seek their own ambitions, thus becoming missing-nin. Ninja of this class are often noted in the Bingo book, a list of notable enemy ninja marked for assassination that each ninja village provides for its Jonin and ANBU squad members. Most ninja, even high-level ones, choose to flee rather than face someone of the S-class. Ninja of the S-class are often highly revered, and usually signified by nicknames allies or enemies give them. Such as the Legendary Sannin are all S-class ninja.
The ANBU (暗部, The ANBU? literally "Hidden Section", Viz manga "Black Ops", English TV "ANBU Black Ops") is actually short for Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai (暗殺戦術特殊部隊, Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai? literally Special Assassination and Tactical Squad), and is an organization of assassination squads that serves directly under the village's leader. The ANBU wear porcelain animal masks in order to distinguish themselves from normal shinobi and to conceal their identities, and also have standard uniforms consisting of black and gray armor, arm guards, a signature spiral tattoo on their left shoulder, and a Ninjatō strapped on their back (though certain ANBU wear black cowls over their uniforms). They know the layout of the human body in detail, and have developed several techniques to strengthen their job, such as paralyzing the target. There are also Hunter-nin (追い忍, Oinin?, literally "Chasing Ninja", English TV "Tracker Ninja"), a possible sub-group within the ANBU, given the specific duty of hunting down missing-nin, and destroying their corpses, so their village's secrets won't be revealed to foreign ninja.
Konoha is shown having two ANBU-like organizations, though are separate from ANBU entirely. The Konoha Military Police Force (木ノ葉警務部隊, Konoha Keimu Butai?, English TV: "Leaf Police Force"), or Military Police for short, is a unique organization in Konoha, though other villages may have similar organizations. Their symbol is the Uchiha crest because the Uchiha family founded the organization. The Military Police previously consisted of mostly Uchiha clan members, though now that most members of the clan are dead, this is no longer the case. The Military Police are in charge of law enforcement within the village, and their jurisdiction is virtually unlimited except in matters that are under the Hokage's direct control, though they also respect ANBU's own investigative system and inner-organization discipline. The Niju Shotai (二十小隊, The Niju Shotai? Twenty Platoons) is a task force created by Tsunade, the Fifth Hokage, created for the purpose of tracking down, attempting to capture, and, if necessary, eliminating Akatsuki members in the Fire Country. This force consists of twenty four-man teams.
Konoha ANBU are usually under the direct command of the Hokage, but several years before the start of the series there was an ANBU Training Department known as "Root" (根, Ne?). Root was created and directly controlled by Danzo, who trained and conditioned children intensively from a very young age. This was done to completely eliminate emotions and enable its members to complete missions without being held back. Root tends to go further in its belief that ninja must not show any emotion than most other ninja groups do, as they forbid any members to possess anything that may invoke emotion (though Sai somehow has a book that he claims was for his brother). It was implied that the department might have used methods similar to Kirigakure's graduation exam, including putting students against each other in fights to the death. Because Danzo is a war hawk and opposed the Third Hokage, Root was disbanded. However, many former members are still loyal to Root. Even though Root is shown to have been well-intentioned, both Jiraiya and Tsunade remain wary of the organization.
Medical-nin (医療忍, iryō-nin?) are ninja who specialize in medical treatment and use medical-oriented jutsu to heal others. Becoming a medic-nin requires an extreme level of intelligence and excellent chakra control, since medic-nin use chakra to heal injuries. Aside from their medical training, their combat training consists mainly of taijutsu skills, with emphasis placed on evading enemy attacks, as the death of the medic-nin could result in the death of the team, though medical techniques can also be used offensively. On dangerous missions, a medic-nin will usually be sent along with the team, to increase the survival rate of that team.
Missing-nin (抜け忍, Nukenin?, literally "Fugitive Ninja", English TV "Rogue Ninja") are ninja who have abandoned their Hidden Village, and as such can include ninja of every rank. These ninja are considered traitors and are hunted down because of the secrets they may hold. Other Hidden Villages would be interested in purchasing this information because it could be useful in gaining an upper hand in battle or obtaining a bloodline limit unique to a village. Villages create special units of hunter-nin to take care of this problem, although it's unlikely that every missing-nin has a team of hunter-nin sent after them. Also, some may be impossible to find unless they do something to attract attention.
He is known as "Gaara of the Sand" in the Viz manga translation, "Gaara of the Desert" in the Viz English anime, and "Sabaku no Gaara" (砂瀑の我愛羅, "Sabaku no Gaara"? Gaara of the Sand Waterfall) in the original Japanese (Sabaku 砂瀑 means "sand waterfall", but sabaku 砂漠 means "desert", thus the more common "Gaara of the Desert").
Gaara is a foil character to Naruto, having virtually the same childhood experiences, but reacting to it in a much different way, resulting in numerous comparisons and contrasts with Naruto. During an interview in the Uzumaki Naruto Artbook, Masashi Kishimoto says that Gaara is almost like a mirror image of Naruto; they're opposites, but they're very similar. "Gaara's upbringing was very much like Naruto's. He was universally rejected and ignored, living a superfluous existence. But Naruto and Gaara have different viewpoints on their backgrounds; that's why they come into conflict"
The first costume of Gaara was too difficult for Masashi Kishimoto to draw so he changed it during the Sasuke Retrieval Arc. The costume covers the neck, reminding Kishimoto of The Matrix
Prior to Gaara's birth, Sunagakure saw a series of budget cuts that made it difficult for the village to operate. As a result, Gaara's father ordered Chiyo to seal the One-Tailed Shukaku within Gaara during his birth in the hopes that he would become the ultimate weapon for the village. As a sacrifice was needed, Gaara's mother was used. Before she died she cursed Sunagakure, hoping Gaara would avenge her death. As with the other demon hosts, Gaara acquired a physical trait of the tailed beast inside him (tanuki, the animal which the Shukaku is based on). The dark rings under as well as above Gaara's eyes are from him getting no sleep. This is caused by the fear of having the Shukaku take over him when he sleeps, therefore he never sleeps.
Gaara was trained by his father, but raised mainly by his maternal uncle, Yashamaru. Because of the power of Shukaku, the villagers of Sunagakure hated and feared Gaara, seeing him only as the monster sealed within him. For a time, Yashamaru seemed to be the only person who cared about him, being the only person who understood that Gaara could not control his powers. Gaara's father, however, did not see him in the same light, and viewed his frequent attacks upon villagers as a result of a failed experiment that was a threat to the village. Because of the danger Gaara represented, the Kazekage asked Yashamaru to kill Gaara. Yashamaru complied though ultimately failed in the attempt. Although Gaara tried to dismiss this attack as an order of the Kazekage, Yashamaru corrected him by saying that he had willingly accepted the mission. Having never truly loved Gaara, Yashamaru hoped that killing him would avenge the death of his older sister, who had named Gaara after the phrase "a self loving carnage" (我を愛する修羅, Ware wo ai suru shura?), a sign of her hate for Gaara. In a last effort to kill him, Yashamaru blew himself up in the hopes that it would kill Gaara too. Gaara survived the blast without injury and lost the only person he thought had cared for him.
Shukaku, the one-tailed beast.While Gaara had initially tried to be friendly towards others despite their fear of him, Yashamaru's actions and words changed him. Realizing that nobody loved him, Gaara used his sand to create the kanji on his forehead (愛, "Love") as a symbol of a "demon loving only himself". He became emotionally withdrawn, all but silent, and consumed with a bitter loathing for everyone but himself. He learned to find pleasure and eventually a reason to live in annihilating the numerous assassins sent to kill him – and by extension, anyone who threatened his existence. Gaara's insomnia, forced upon him by the fear that the demon inside him would eat away at his personality if he were to fall asleep, only furthered his instability and desire to kill. In time, Gaara's father came to appreciate Gaara and the uses he could serve, and canceled all assassination orders in the hopes that Gaara would become an effective tool for Sunagakure.
While he enjoys the opportunity to kill others for much of the Chunin Exam's early stages, he is eventually pitted against Rock Lee during the preliminaries of the Third Stage. Gaara's sand allows him to survive each attack Lee throws at him and eventually gain the upper hand. Their match allows Gaara a change in ideals; rather than determine his own existence by killing anyone he meets, Gaara finds a drive to kill those strong enough to defeat him, and begins to long to find a formidable opponent.
Gaara's wishes are soon realized when he is matched against Sasuke Uchiha who is able to badly injure Gaara near his shoulder, so much so that Gaara ends up unconscious. Despite this setback, Gaara's wound magnifies his desire to kill Sasuke and the two soon resume their battle. When Sasuke is no longer able to battle and Gaara goes in for the kill, Naruto Uzumaki arrives to save him and defeats Gaara. Realizing that Naruto's strength stems from his desire to protect others, Gaara abandons his prior ideals and decides to acquire strength by caring for others. The first sign of this is that he apologizes to Temari and Kankuro for his actions towards them.
Gaara's new disposition is first seen when he comes to Rock Lee's aid during the Sasuke Retrieval arc. Upon seeing that the injuries Lee received during their last battle have yet to fully heal, Gaara repeatedly stops him from fighting, concerned that Lee will only harm himself further. These new ideals are seen again during the anime's filler arcs, where Gaara acquires a student named Matsuri. As the two begin training, Gaara worries that all of the potential training weapons might cause Matsuri injury, so he has her train with the least harmful weapon present.
Over the timeskip, Gaara's personality changes a great deal. While in the past he was fairly hostile to his siblings (to a point which they were both scared of him), he has since come to hold them in a higher regard, and talks to Kankuro about his problems and dreams. As a result of becoming the Fifth Kazekage (五代目風影, Godaime Kazekage?), Gaara now acts as the villager's source of protection and values their lives over his own. The villagers, in turn, have also begun to hold Gaara in a more admirable regard, especially amongst the younger generation and females. However, much of the Elder population, especially with the higher ranks, still holds malice towards him and call the younger generation fools for believing in him. This begins to change following the Rescue Gaara arc.
As the host of Shukaku, Gaara possesses the ability to manipulate sand, typically moving it through the air to serve various purposes. The amount of sand he can control at one time is fairly immense, as in Part II he is able to gather enough sand to cover Sunagakure as a shield. If sand is lacking in abundance, Gaara can use what little sand there is to break apart the minerals in the ground to create more sand. While he can control any dry sand, ordinary sand requires more chakra to manipulate it, tiring him at a rapid rate. As a result, Gaara keeps his own chakra-enhanced sand with him at all times in a calabash gourd (which is also made out of sand) on his back. Because this sand is already infused with his chakra, Gaara can control it more easily to perform stronger and faster attacks.
When first introduced his basic means of attacks is to capture, immobilize, potentially suffocate an opponent with sand and to crush the opponent with varying intensities. In time he is able to increase the scale of these attacks; by first using sand to cover a large area, and then compressing the sand and crushing all that it covers.
As the second element of his stationary combat style, Gaara has a number of sand-based defenses to be used in case an opponent gets too close. His primary defense is an automatic sand shield that surrounds and protects him from damage whether he wants it to or not. Gaara can control the shield to some degree, strengthening it to steel-like quality or calling upon it to completely encase himself. While an effective defense, the shield can be overcome with high speed attacks or simply be broken through with incredibly forceful strikes. Should this happen, Gaara has a layer of sand covering his body. Although it's a useful secondary defense, the sand armor requires large amounts of chakra to remain active and also has the side-effect of weighing Gaara down.
In addition to these basic methods of offense and defense, Gaara also has a number of miscellaneous attacks that, while capable of being an attack or a shield, are not limited to such purposes. Gaara can use sand as a platform to allow himself and others to float in the air. He can also create a floating eyeball of sand in any location that he can see through as a means of spying.
At some point in time Gaara begins to be able to form weapons in Shukaku's likeness. Because the replica is formed under extreme pressure and is built of the strongest minerals it is virtually indestructible, having yet to be penetrated by any force. The anime expands on the idea of having an "ultimate defense" by creating an "ultimate attack". Like the shield, this attack has yet to meet a defense it can't break.
In desperate situations, Gaara can take on the form of Shukaku by layering sand on his body, making him many times more powerful than he already is. Shukaku's personality grows more dominant during this transformation. Once finished, Gaara assumes a human-sized version of Shukaku wherein he relies on his brute strength to destroy everything around him. While in this sand-based form Gaara has the ability to use wind based attacks.
If need be, Gaara can almost instantly create a life-sized version of Shukaku should the human-sized form fail. In this form, he remains deep within the Shukaku copy safe from harm though unable to move. Gaara can also unleash the spirit of Shukaku forcing himself to sleep to allow the Shukaku copy to operate at its full potential. To do so, however, Gaara must emerge from within the copy, leaving him open to attack for the duration of the jutsu. While Gaara is initially dependent on waking independently or through someone else's intervention to regain control of his body, he begins to be able to suppress Shukaku by himself towards the end of the anime's filler arcs.
In Part II, the Shukaku is extracted from the body of Gaara by Akatsuki. While he no longer possesses the Shukaku, Gaara is still able to manipulate sand, as proven when he uses it to pull Naruto's hand towards his for a handshake, though greater degrees of control has yet to be seen.
Gaara is sent to the Chunin Exams in order to help in the invasion in Konoha. Gaara, Temari and Kankuro are organized into a team under the supervision of Baki. During his fight in the third stage of the exams, Sasuke is able to badly injure Gaara near his shoulder, so much so that Gaara is unable to participate in Konoha's invasion as planned. Despite this setback, Gaara's wound magnifies his desire to kill Sasuke and the two soon resume their battle. When Sasuke is no longer able to battle and Gaara goes in for the kill, Naruto Uzumaki arrives to save him. Naruto meets Gaara in battle and is eventually able to defeat him. After Konohagakure and Sunagakure make an alliance, Gaara is sent to protect the Konoha genin in their mission to retrieve Sasuke with his siblings. Gaara would fight against Kimimaro who dies before killing him because of his terminal illness.
In Part II, Gaara is captured by Deidara of Akatsuki and the Shukaku is extracted from his body, causing his death. Chiyo, regretting the life she gave Gaara when she sealed Shukaku in his body years earlier, gives up her life, using her life-transfer technique, to bring him back to life.
Temari (テマリ, Temari?) is generally overbearing, if not crude, toward those around her, often not being afraid to speak her mind. She seems to value peace, and questions Sunagakure's justifications for going to war with Konohagakure. This trait carries over to Part II where she begins acting as a liaison between Sunagakure and Konoha as the two villages prepare for the next Chunin Exam. Many of Temari's appearances are associated with Shikamaru Nara. The two face each other during the Chunin Exam in Part I, where Shikamaru forfeits his match instead of defeating Temari. Temari later comes to his aid during the Sasuke Retrieval arc and defeats Tayuya to save him. Shikamaru returns the favor in the last of the anime's filler arcs and saves her from one of the Shiitenshounin. In addition, the two are seen together in their Part II debuts. In this instance, Naruto Uzumaki asks if the two are on a date, though both state that this is not the case.
Temari is a keen analyst, and can deduce an opponent's strategies and weaknesses soon after a battle begins. For actual combat she uses her giant iron fan that, in addition to serving as a makeshift club, she can use to glide upon for short distances. The fan's primary usage is for performing Cutting Whirlwind Technique (カマイタチの術, Kamaitachi no Jutsu?, English TV "Wind Scythe Jutsu"), which creates guidable gusts of wind that she can use to attack opponents over long distances. The winds her fans create can also be formed into tornadoes that immobilize opponents and leave them open to attack. Particularly strong winds can also be used to manipulate the surrounding environment to her advantage, such as uprooting trees to eliminate any potential cover. Temari is able to use the fan as a medium for summoning Kamatari (カマタリ), a one-eyed sickle weasel that creates gusts of wind, akin to a storm, that are capable of decimating an entire forest
Kankuro (カンクロウ, Kankurō?) is initially characterized by his apparent dislike for children, as seen when he is noticeably irritated while in the presence of someone younger than him. Though, this seems to have gone away as time passed by. This is most evident when he is with Gaara, who Kankuro is forced to put up with due to the fear his younger brother imposes on him. Despite their apparent differences, Gaara and Kankuro become very close over the timeskip as Gaara begins to confide in Kankuro and shares his dreams of wanting to risk his life to protect Sunagakure. As such, Kankuro has become very protective of Gaara, willing to challenge anyone who puts Gaara down in his presence. When Gaara is captured by Akatsuki, Kankuro rushes to his brother's aid in an attempt to save him and even after being nearly killed as a result he does not falter in his resolve to find Gaara.
Kankuro has shown to be a rather violent and brutal opponent, often leaving his opponents in extreme pain after battle. He is a talented puppeteer, and with each of his appearances in the major arcs is seen with a new puppet in his arsenal. The three puppets that have been introduced were all originally created by Sasori, and came into Kankuro's possession some time after the former left Sunagakure. Karasu (烏, Karasu? "Crow"), the first of Kankuro's puppets to make an appearance, has been heavily modified by Kankuro. Because of this it is highly offensive, having numerous concealed weapons and being able to detach any of its limbs for separate attacks. Kuroari (黒蟻, Kuroari? "Black Ant"), the second of Kankuro's puppets to make an appearance, is used to capture opponents for assassination purposes. Once an opponent is captured within it each of Kuroari's arms convert to saw-blades and slice through the confined opponent.Sanshouo (山椒魚, Sanshōuo?, "Salamander"), the third of Kankuro's puppets to make an appearance, is not seen in action in the manga. In the anime, Sanshouo is shown to have a hollow body that Kankuro can take cover in to defend against attacks. These puppets seem to be designed to work together to some degree, as Kankuro frequently uses them in tandem to increase their effectiveness. Karasu, for example, can blanket an area in smoke while Kuroari fires weapons at the blinded opponent.
In the anime and manga series, Naruto, there exist tailed demons with an unimaginable amount of chakra called Bijuu. .Their are a total of nine demons that exist scattered throughout the Naruto world. Each Bijuu has a different number of tail, starting with Shukaku, the one-tailed demon going all the way up to the nine-tailed demon, Kyuubi. While only two of them have been revealed to us it has been stated in the manga that Akatsuki currently holds four of the nine demons. They have captured Gaara and extracted the power of Shukaku from him, and hold Yugito, the Jinchuuriki of the two-tailed demon cat. It is yet unknown what the other Bijuu are exactly. Other than the Three-tailed demon turtle, the rest of the Bijuu that have been revealed to us are based on creatures from Japanese mythology, so it is speculated that the rest of them will be from there as well.
A person within whom a Bijuu has been sealed at birth is called a Jinchuuriki, and grows up to exhibit extraordinary chakra. According to Akatsuki members, the Jinchuuriki are typically lonely people who hate humanity. This is probably because everyone is afraid of the Jinchuuriki and either run away upon seeing them or try and kill them (the same way people of the Hidden Sand Village treated Gaara). Before Gaara, when Akatsuki captured the two Jinchuuriki villages no one from their villages seemed to care, and in fact were thankful to be rid of them. The known Bijuu and Jinchuuriki that we have seen are below.
Shukaku, the One-Tailed Demon Racoon-Dog, in Gaara
Sasori's grandmother, Chiyo, had the demon Shukaku sealed into Gaara.. Shukaku comes out when Gaara goes to sleep. As soon as Gaara awakens, however, the Shukaku disappears. This was first seen in the battle Gaara had with Naruto when Naruto was trying to protect Sakura from being killed. The powers Shukaku gives Gaara are the ability to move and levitate sand at will, as well as the ability to be protected at all times by the sand, regardless of his will (even self-inflicted injuries are prevented by the sand). He suffers from a side effect of lifelong insomnia and the black circles around his eyes show that. Later on in Naruto (this has only been shown in the manga thus far) Gaara was defeated in battle by Akatsuki member Deidara and Akatsuki removed the Shukaku demon from Gaara leading to Gaara's death. Luckily for Gaara, he was later on to be revived by Sasori's grandmother who gave her own life energy and sacrificed her life for the sake of Gaara's.
Nibi, the Two-Tailed Demon Cat, in Yugito
Nibi is seen to be a two-tailed, flaming cat in the Naruto manga (It has not appeared in the anime yet). Other than the ability to breathe fire, we are unsure of what kind of powers the Demon Cat possess. Yugito is a female Jinchuuriki. She was first seen in chapter 313 of the manga, and is a ninja from the Hidden Cloud Village. She refers to herself as the second strongest ninja of the village. Despite transforming into the Demon Cat's true form, she is quickly and easily beaten by akatsuki members Hidan and Kakuzu. At the end we see her pinned to a wall by a kunai through her hands. Later on Akatsuki member Zetsu arrives to take her off their hands, and Akatsuki eventually extracts the bijuu out.
Sanbi, the Three-Tailed Demon Turtle
The Sanbi is first seen in the Naruto Manga, chapter 317. We see Akatsuki members Deidara and Tobi trying to bring down the Sanbi, which Tobi says is a turtle. The Sanbi retaliates against the attacks of the members and Tobi runs from it while Deidara molds his explosive clay into a fish then throws it into the water. The clay fish swims close beside the Bijuu before detonating. Deidara and Tobi end up defeating and capturing the Bijuu very easily. Tobi gloats about how he defeated the Sanbi, and Deidara scolds him by saying that he had helped and that Akatsuki members are not supposed to act like that. Deidara adds that Tobi should not be that excited because the Sanbi was weak because it did not have a Jinchuuriki to control its power.
Yonbi, in an Elderly Man
The four-tails Jinchuuriki was an elderly man who was first seen in chapter 353 of the Naruto manga. It is unknown where he was from or what animal the bijuu was because Kisame had already defeated him when he was shown in the manga. Although he was seen defeated, Kisame said that he had a difficult time with this Jinchuuuriki because of all the elemental fusions (combining different types of attacks like fire, wind, and water) that the old man could perform. It is hypothesized that the dark mark seen around this Jinchuuriki's nose and cheeks is an influence of his bijuu (like Naruto's whiskers and the dark circles around Gaara's eyes).
Kyuubi, The Nine Tailed Demon Fox, in Naruto
The Forth Hokage sealed the Kyuubi, the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, within Naruto after its attack on Konoha twelve years before the start of Naruto the series. It is said to be the most powerful of the tailed-beasts because a single swipe of one of its nine tails could raise tsunamis and flatten mountains The Kyuubi gives Naruto the ability to heal from wounds at astonishing speeds, as well as give him an immense amount of Chakra. It is also the reason why Naruto has those three lines (or whiskers) on each side of his face. The Kyuubi is activated in times of extreme rage (like when Naruto saw Sasuke take a hit for him and thought that he was going to die) and times of near death (like when Naruto is about to drown after being heavily wounded in the battle between him and Sasuke). As the Nine-Tailed fox is activated, Naruto becomes more and more like the Kyuubi. The Third Hokage and Kakashi Hatake have said that if Naruto loses all control of the Kyuubi's chakra, than the seal which keeps it inside Naruto will break and the Kyuubi will be freed.
Fortunatley, this has not happened, so Naruto still has the Kyuubi within him. He has been trained by one of the three legendary Sannin, Jiraiya, so that he could control and call upon the power of the Kyuubi at will.
Legend of the Tailed Beasts
In the ancient Japan, according to the legend, each elemental god was sealed into an elemental shrine. Out of the 9 Bijuu, 5 of them were elemental gods, those being Shukaku, of the Wind; Kyuubi, of Fire; Isonade, of Water; Raijuu, of Lightning, and Kaku of Earth.
In the Legend of the Tailed Beasts, the 5 elemental gods were sealed with instruments called “The Tools of Power” (法器). Not all of them are known, and their translation may be not accurate, but all resemble a type of varied container (kettle, prison, altar, etc.)
After researching for a while, I’ve discovered that the “Tools of Power” descend from the “Eight Immortals” from the Chinese mythology. They’re deities who transfer their individual energy to each “Tool of Power”, that is able to give life or destroy evil. Together, the eight tools are called "Covert Eight Immortals" (暗八仙); (Though only five appear in the Legend, and it may be a varied version of it). The Immortals are: Immortal Woman He (He Xiangu), Royal Uncle Cao (Cao Guojiu), Iron-crutch Li (Li Tieguai), Lan Caihe, Lü Dongbin, Philosopher Han Xiang (Han Xiang Zi), Elder Zhang Guo and Zhongli Quan.
Personal Notes: For a moment I associated the Immortal Woman to Sakura <insert snicker> and Iron Crutch Li to Lee, and even some of the others to characters from the Rookie 9 + Gai Team; but everything is too vague.
Continuing the Elemental Shrine story:
There were respective shrines dedicated to these elemental Bijuu scattered through Japan’s territory, being the Fire shrine the strongest. Though, the shines keep releasing spiritual energy even while the Bijuu are sealed within sleeping, and this power from the 5 shrines goes to the Five-Tails: Houkou.
After Yamata no Orochi got the legendary sword Kusanagi no Tsurugi from the Kusanagi Clan, it defeated Nekomata and Houkou (Check Yamata no Orochi’s tale).
Yamata no Orochi then proceeded to release a tremendous amount of dark power to awaken the five elemental Bijuu, that were sealed in the 5 shrines, with the purpose of bringing chaos between worlds.
It ended up fighting the one deserving of the title “King of Bijuu”: Kyuubi no Youko. It has an unending amount of chakra, and because of that, Yamata no Orochi was defeated.
