This is something that happens to me quite frequently. I see some promo art or a quick description of a show and initially think it's "meh" and then at some point I actually get around to trying it and it turns out to be a really well done show. Other times it's still not a great show but it turns out to be surprisingly addictive and entertaining.

It's because of surprises like that, that I have taken up a policy of always trying at least 3 episodes of everything that shows up

Hajime no Ippo for example. I don't like boxing, at all. My brother loves it and has spent years trying to drown me in it's awesomeness (I return the favor trying to expose him to anime. To date neither of us have taken up the other's hobby and now that we are older we are less aggressive about it...we still try though). Then at one point I tried this series and was blown away by it. I'm still not a boxing fan but Ippo is one of my favorite anime.

Even with the current anime season we have shows like "Bodacious space Pirates" which has turned out nothing like what the title lead me to expect and I love it.

and of course there is Madoka, one of the ultimate bait and switch animes I've ever seen

So I figured I'd open a thread to see what shows have surprised other people.

Might be some stuff I've missed that I should check out.

(of course sometimes a show turns out to be as bad as I thought it would be, if not worse, but for this thread I'd like to stick to the ones that people are surprised they enjoyed)

I don't think it was the promo but the first episode, but Majiko! Samurai Girls was the opposite for me, I loved the first episode and nothing more of the series.

Speaking of Hajime no Ippo I just finished the entire series recently and its a great anime. So much so in fact that it encouraged me to read through the manga.

HunterxHunter was another series. The manga was hard to get into because of the art style and quality but after going through the stories of the anime, its become one of my favorite series.

I have no idea why this was reported to the moderators unless they have proof it's a duplicate.

Anyway, House of Five Leaves, Denno Coil and Cross Game really swept me off my feet. I wasn't expecting them to bad by any means, I was just ultimately blown away with how impressive they were from beginning to end.

I think there's a thread called "Anime Which Surprised You Most" which may explain the report as a possible duplicate.

As for surprising animes, I would say that School Days, Phantom Requiem, Another (the current ongoing series), Vampire Knight, Death Note, and a few others.

Tbh, I like surprises

ah well if it gets locked it gets locked. maybe it could be merged with whatever thread it duplicates.

Denno Coil is a perfect example of an unexpectedly great series.

that one actually got my mother interested in anime. She doesn't watch a lot of stuff but there are quite a few she likes now.
The Gokusen is one of her favorites, and another show that I was really surprised by how much II liked it.

I'm actually holding this series off for a bit. Do you know if there's any cyberpunk themes in it thou?

lol It really shouldn't count. That thread is long dead. I needed the exact search terms to even find it anyway.

We'll need a moderator to join them together.

I wouldn't say Denno Coil has explicit cyberpunk themes because it's not based in a completely dystopian future but it does feature a society that is dependent on technology, well the story definitely is at least. I really hope it gets licensed here in the US at some point; it's highly recommended.

Not exactly Cyberpunk, kind of a near future where Augmented Reality has become the norm. Everyone wears goggles that overlay a virtual reality on top of the normal world.

Naturally kids come up with Hack Programs that let them shoot lasers and missiles at each other for fun.
there is a much deeper story in it but watching the kids interact with their reality is a lot of fun.
