Oh, that sounds interesting.

I'm also going to throw in Steins; Gate as one of my favorite anime last year. It really surprised me about half way through the series when a particular someone decided to kill

The entire storyline involves much more than that thou. God, I can't wait for the movie and OVA to come out. ~tututu

It is quite awesome, I still have this image etched in my brain.

The series is fun, exciting, suspenseful and it's all subtly and brilliantly executed.

I'll throw in my vote for Denno Coil as well. I loved that show.

I'll have to also add Chihayafuru. From the description, there was no reason for me to like that show. But it works, and it works really well.

Love the Avatar BTW Greylurker.

hmmm...

Bodacious Space Pirates went from 'maybe I'll check this out' to "awesome space/naval adventure!!!'

Madoka -- was friggin' awesome though I saw some of it coming. once you realized you were watching a deconstruction you kinda got a clue as to the curve that was going to be put on the balls thrown at you. Madoka remains one of the best animes of it's season and nearly led to the lapsing of my CR account because CR had nearly nothing that season.

Special Duty Shinesman -- It was a silly send up of the Sentai type show but it was really funny.

C Cubed - cubed cursed and curious- Not sure why but this show somehow stood head and shoulders above the others of it's type. something about the delivery and the plot just really had me hooked.

Drrr - proved to be a lot more fun than I expected, and some of the surprises truly were... My reaction was often 'Why didn't I see that coming?" as opposed to 'Yawn, I knew it."

Sora wa Otoshimo - I suppose you could argue it was K-on in baggy field grey fatigues but there was something about it...

I think Madoka surprised everyone. One Piece surprised me and Fate/Zero surprised me, because I wasn't too fond of Fate/Stay Night.

In the early days of Netflix streaming, they had a rather small selection of anime, and many of them required renting the disc for the final episodes, which made me more hesitant to start some titles, especially if all I had to go by was the description.

One of those titles was Utawarerumono, which based on the description Netflix gave it at the time, sounded rather sedate, and possibly even boring. When I was running low on options, and decided to give it a try, and it turn out to be one of my favorites for that year.

Another one that surprised me was Twelve Kingdoms. The previews I had seen had done little to convey what makes this series good, and even the first few episodes had me concerned perhaps I had committed to a series that wasn't that great. Before I reached the end of the series, however, I was desperately wishing it had at least another 45 episodes.

Several animes' come to mind for me Touch, and Major were definite surprises for me since I'm not really a big sports anime fan, though I will say I have watched several that I wasn't sure I would like and got hooked on them. I may have to check out the boxing anime, who knows I may actually like it. I just finished watching Fruits Basket last night, I've heard people talking about it but it just never seemed to appeal to me then a couple days ago I found it so I figured I would give it a shot, I was hooked from the first episode. I really wish they would have done another season though.

12 kingdoms is one of my guilty pleasures too. It's slow at times and the heroine(s) some times you just want to slap them and shout 'Get a grip" but it's so good in the end. ... and feels unfinished ... like it could go another 45 eps and not get stale.

I finally bought Twelve Kingdoms and am really looking forward to watching it again! I paid $45 for the Complete Collection DVDs instead of having to fork over twice as much, or more, for the blu-rays. Which I'm certain would look great, but when it comes anime, I'd rather have a bigger selection than just a few in high-definition.

Anyway, NANA was another series that I wasn't too sure I would enjoy but by the end I was completely blown away and like Twelve Kingdoms, it left me desperate for more.

From what I've heard 12 Kingdoms anime kind of shot themselves in the foot. They cut some stuff out early in the series that turned out to be important later. Apparently it made it impossible for them to continue on with another season and still follow the books.

I have no idea why this was reported to the moderators unless they have proof it's a duplicate.

Anyway, House of Five Leaves, Denno Coil and Cross Game really swept me off my feet. I wasn't expecting them to bad by any means, I was just ultimately blown away with how impressive they were from beginning to end.

Finally, another Cross Game fan. I agree, looking at the trailer I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Cross Game, it looked like it might be a little dull, and I had never tried a sports anime up until that point. But once I got into it I was hooked, and I ended up watching it all the way through twice. It's now tied for my favorite anime. Definitely glad I gave it a chance.

If you liked Touch, you should check out Mitsuru Adachi's most recent work, Cross Game. For me it was much better than Touch. Granted, I'm not all the way through Touch yet, but the average Cross Game episode still seems better.

Also, what boxing anime are you talking about?
