There's a Korean movie, but then it was adapted to be an anime I think. Its about a dog, who poos, and the poo is the main character. Its genius. Otherwise it'd be Serial Experiment Lain-it was the first "unique" anime I ever saw Excel Saga-a parody of all Japanese anime and culture. The more you watch anime and study Japan the more funnier it gets.

It's a long runner and I've only seen the first two seasons. I would kind of compare it to Gintama in tone and style, but it's story and setting is different.

I found the screenplay quite unique because (not sure if It merits a spoiler tag but just in case) Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show It's different from most ghost animes. Instead of going for an exorcism, horror or ala Shinigami no Ballad approach, it deals with regrets and forgiveness. But I agree a close contender would be Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei!
