I'll have to throw in FLCL. It is strange, over-the-top, funny, and very entertaining with an awesome soundtrack. I don't know what the production staff was smoking but it must have been potent.

Jigoku Shoujo (i.e Hell Girl)
the episodes may get a little repetitive, but i think the plot is rather unique.

All suggestions posted above are good ones.

I liked a Funimation soap opera titled Rumbling Hearts (aka KGNE or Kimi ga Nozumo Eien = The Eternity you Desire, loose translation). At first it started like other potential harem or triangular anime involving characters in high school. Initially I almost dropped it before end of Episode 1. But from an incident that came early in episode 2 I was hooked on this series all the way to the end. Even located and watched the Ova's which suggest an alternate outcome. Script writer Eric Vale did a terrific job making the main characters' actions and reactions appear realistic and believable. Without revealing the plot and creating spoilers the story revolves around 4 characters whose friendships and senses of trust are tested after the incident in episode 2 occurs. Post-traumatic stress disorder is examined thoroughly and you get to see how those friends around him are affected over time.

My main objection was the age of the characters, 3 years too young. With today's redefining of content that is considered art versus porn watching something like this series borders in the grey zone of legality versus illegality. Otherwise, it's a terrific slice of life series. One of my favorites.

I'd have to agree with pretty much everyone so far about unique titles... you can find a parallel to almost anything so I'd think of unique in this sense either something that has nothing like it, which for older titles they probably have something similar by now, or that it's one of the best in it's genre that it stands apart from all others and you forget about the rest lol.

I'll throw in...

Bartender - slice of life stories but they are told in unique way through cocktails in a secluded bar.
Planetes
Daily Lives of High School Boys - yes there are others like it, but it's told from the male perspective which makes it unique
Eden of the East
Rin - Daughters of Mnemosyne
Paranoia Agent
umineko no naku koro ni
Kurenai
Steins;gate
Trapeze
Pale Cocoon
Corpse Princess

I think all these shows have their own unique properties to them that make them very interesting to watch... it's not necessarily that the story has never been done before, but it's told in a unique way.

If you're looking for unique shows it's probably best to steer clear of romance-comedy/harem/ecchi stuff since most of it has been done to death and it's only a rare find like Toradora! or Kare Kano that really stand out. The list of unique anime is a lot longer than most would think in my opinion... I could certainly justify quite a few more titles being added to the list but this is probably a good mix of titles that won't have you saying "haven't I seen this before?"

From that list, are most of them psychological and which one would be your favorite? I do find most psychological/horror animes to be quite unique and hard to be predict. I guess I'm asking this as I've not seen any of those series before.

Note: I did edit that list you posted as I've seen some of the series originally like Steins; Gate and Uminkeo.

Well one I forgot to throw in was Kara no Kyoukai - Garden of Sinners... I'm still in the process of watching that but it's pretty amazing.

I think most would fall into the angst/psychological category, with the exception of Bartender, which is just literally some good stories shared over drinks at a bar.

Pale Cocoon is a really cool one shot sci-fi, it's available here http://www.crunchyroll.com/pale-cocoon

Paranoia Agent tops the list for classic just messed up psycho/horror where as Rin falls more into action/tragedy. Kurenai is one that I've heard people say they love it or hate it, but again it's more so angst/action/tragedy. Trapeze is just crazy and all over the place and I had a great deal of fun watching it. I've seen the first ep of Planetes and liked it, but I saw that back when the series was first released and figured I'd wait till all the eps came out before watching, and it just kinda got pushed to the back, but it's supposed to be a space drama with a pretty unique premise.

One I also remembered was Ga-Rei: Zero... action/sci-fi, really enjoyed it.

Uniqueness and originality are hard to find now, and again I think it more so comes down to what stands out the most even though it's somewhat been done before, or after... so i'm trying to keep my titles constricted to stuff that has some unique flair to it, which is also probably why they are falling into the tragedy and horror categories... even stories that are similar seem original due to good storytelling in those genres.

Kara no Kyoukai - Garden of Sinners is alright although not in my favorites. It is unique the fact that it's divided into long OVAs/Movies rather than a linear story arc anime.

Not sure if I can agree with you on Gai-Rei: Zero thou as I watched the first episode and was VERY confusing. A friend of mine recommended me the series even after I finished watching the first episode so I might give it a 2nd try. I heard the manga is completely different thou.

Also, I want to throw out that Shaft probably does the most unique animes with their unique word play ability and dialogues as seen in Nisemonogatari and Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Those are some interesting series thou as I'm a big fan of psychological series

Type-Moon stuff isn't for everyone... it has it's own strangeness to it that not everyone likes so that's understandable.

Zero is one that is very confusing, but it's also another one, like Garden of the Sinners which is aired out of chronological order... the actual order is 3-9, 1-2, 10-12, which is why those first two eps are completely confusing and out of place and it takes getting through a fair amount of the short series to start putting together the fragments from the first ep.

And yeah I agree Shaft is amazing... Madoka is one of my top series of all time, same with Bakemonogatari (haven't started nisemono yet)...

I've also kind of grown angry this season with Symphogear as it seems like it's trying to capitalize on the success that Madoka had with it's unique take on the Magical Girl genre, or rather the destruction of the very base of the genre... I can just draw far too many parallels to Madoka, and they seem intentional, and poorly done... but that's just my opinion.

Oh, I recommend Nisemonogatari. You can watch it here on CR and the art is amazing. I even find that there may be a storyline plot forming soon.

As for Senhime Zesshou Symphogear, I do plan on watching the series after it finishes airing. For some reason thou, I find the anime to be a bit similar to Macross Frontier judging by the previews I've watched. I agree with the part about Madoka thou. Her character in the series takes Magical Girl to an unique level that I've never seen before in anime till recently. Shaft again proves itself to be an epic studio.

It's gotta be Monster for me! It's dark, edgy, intelligent, plus unlike most anime nowadays it's meant for more of a mature audience!
