Let me preface this by saying I LOVE anime. I've been watching it
since before I was even aware that there was a thing called anime. I am not trying to say that anime is bad, or that its silly and shouldn't be taken seriously. However, I think many might agree that there are some specific themes, or tropes, that pop up occasionally(sometimes more than occasionally.) that tend to take away from the over all beauty of a story. I think that is a shame, because I do enjoy the genre of anime so much, and I want other people to like it too, but I feel that some of these "tropes" might be adding to the inaccessibility that plagues the anime genre. I will talk about just one thing that bothers me about anime below, you can respond to that if you want, but my original questions is still this: What aspects of some anime bother you, or do you wish were improved? FIllers I am not talking about the kind of filler in which the characters take a break from fighting evil to go on a date/picnic. These can actually be beneficial to the story, because they give us a chance to see the characters in a different setting, giving us an idea of depth in these characters. I am talking about what happens when an anime catches up with the manga and so, in order to let, the manga get ahead they throw in a ton of useless(as in it doesn't advance the plot), often badly written, and forgettable story. By definition these fillers HAVE to be useless and forgettable. This content is not written by the author in most cases and so the story in the fillers must not have any lasting effect on storyso that once the manga is ahead of the game by enough they can resume with the ACTUAL story as if nothing has happened, because after all nothing HAS happened. I believe this practice of turning a manga into an anime before it is complete is a mistake that represents a fundamental disrespect to the art form that is storytelling. |

Mmm, true, but you can say that about any tv production nowadays. ALL shows have some sort of filler at some point, an annoying but sad fact...I do agree about the don't-make-the-anime-till-after-the-manga's-finished thing though.
Something that doesn't really annoy me, but that I always roll my eyes at: The OBLIGATORY SHOWER/BATH SCENE! Ah, you know the one. Where one of the beloved main characters gets introspective while being naked...lol. |

One Piece is flawless and you will deal. And I can't believe you people are hating on an anime because it's "endless". Come up with a better reason and maybe I'll consider your opinion. |

Pokemon - I fucking hate this show. It never ends, it's the same thing all the time and none of the characters develop at all. The animation is really cheap, the theme songs suck ass. It's like a dying dog that no one will hit with a shovel.

full metal alchemist because the characters were cliche, they killed off barry the chopper (the best character) very early, the characters were almost impossible to relate too, too much angst and the story was completely cliche and completely predictable.

It isn't the fact that One Piece is long that makes it annoying. Length simply isnt a factor.
What IS a factor is what I think of as the Story to length ratio. How much plot are you getting per episode? or to be more generous, per arch? I watch anime or, any medium, for the story, the plot. The character development is a form of story so that is why i have no problem with a filler that is written by the author and has the characters talking about something meaningful. By my own, somewhat arbitrary definition, this kind of filler isnt a filler all, but development of a different aspect of the story. One piece on the other hand doesn't bother with these kind of fillers. I mean, sure normally they try to make it seem as if the characters in the fillers actually do something of meaning, but mostly its something they have already done a dozen times before. There really isnt any furthering of the plot. This irritates me for the very fact that I love the story behind One Piece, i really do. therefore, I want to actually see plot and character development and this does happen. There is plot development in One Piece, but only about once every 30 or so episodes. This represents and extremely LOW ration of plot to series length. Which to me makes the series unwatchable. THAT is my opinion. and that is also why, if given a choice, I would rather watch a 12 episode anime in which the plot and the characters make great strides forward in EVERY episode rather than a 500 episode anime in which the dilute the story to such a low concentration that it is almost beyond human perception. |

Yes, I believe you're right on the first front. but again I have to point out my distinction between the kind of filler that singularly "fills space" and the kind in which the characters take a break from their regular activities to do something else. In fast paced action stories this is almost essential. but they can also be done badly, and thank you for pointing out that isnt just a flaw that occurs in anime. I think I understand what you mean about the shower scenes, but would you mind terribly posting one of the scenes ur talking about? this thread could use some bumping, after all but seriously I do wanna make sure I understand what you mean. |
