I usually hear recommendations then watch an AMV that would pretty much tell me what it's about. Sure i could read the summary, but those never work for me. So, how do you choose yours????

For the last few seasons I watch the first or first few episodes of (almost) every new show to decide what I want to fully watch. The "Recommend Me an Anime" thread on these forums has been useful in the past, as well as a couple of other threads. Other than that I just check out stuff that I recognize the name of. Usually you recognize the name of an anime because it was at least half-decent. Bad anime isn't talked about all that much. Of course this is a very general rule.

The AMV method isn't a terrible way to go. In fact it was an AMV that got me to watch Air Gear. However in the same AMV there were clips from Noein, but I didn't watch it until much later when someone recommended it. I almost missed out on a great anime because the AMV just didn't get me interested enough. So don't rely on that alone.

You're right about summaries not being worth a shit. All those usually tell me is if it's something that is totally the opposite of what I would want to watch. In the end it only weeds out a few.

I compile a list of what to to watch based on it's subject matter, reading reviews/forums and a show's technical attributes (animation/staff/studio/cast). So more often than not I finish what I start and almost always enjoy the series to some extent. Some more than others obviously but I generally look back on every series fondly in some way. There are literally less than five shows I just couldn't immerse myself in or recommend to anyone.

I read reviews, watch trailers and see their ratings.

i have seen 4 series cuz of chromie_mist's anime battles. usually i just watch the first episode and go from there. i usually base it off of reading the summary and then looking at the genre before watching the first episode. but if theres a popular series i usually try it out.

sounds like ChronicAddict has the best method, in my books.

watch the first 2-3 eps of everything. i mean sure, ok, if you can barely stand to sit thru the first ep without gagging, stop.. but otherwise, give everything at least a couple of eps' chance. i've seen a few series where after the first ep i was kinda groaning and unsure about going on.. and then it was 7am, and i hadn't slept because i just couldn't stop clicking to the next episode.

plus, if you give everything a try, you never have to wonder if Series-X was really as good as all these babbling idiots keep yelling about, or if they're all just crazy.

step 1

look at the poster

step 2 decide if it is good

elaboration: well from the poster you'll usually see the plot ie 1 guy lots of girls, or lots of girls = harem

1 guy 1 girl, it is boy meets girl

step 3 say yes or no

Well several methods really. I keep up with current stuff by using the season charts that float around everywhere on the net. I also look up lots of random series if they pique my interest. After that the process is basically the same though. Put in my "Want To See" list and go look up a trailer on Youtube. If it's a new series and looks good or the plot sounds interesting I'll watch it., and if it's an older series not in the current season I either rent, buy, or stream it, later when I have free time.

Look I am one of the hardest people on earth to sell something on. It takes a ton to sell me in this case on an anime based on number of episodes and what genre it is in.

If it's something like Naruto where it has like 1000 episodes at this point then I just won't watch it. Though there was an exception with Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball. Also of mention is Inuyasha which I will start watching again soon due to the anime series finally having an ending.

Take a look at my list here to give you an idea of my tastes.

Well, I read reviews, recommedations, ratings, trailers, and stuff like that. Similar genres and previous authors also influences my anime choosing.

I personally do not think watching AMV will give you a good understanding of an anime thou. It probably reveals more spoilers tbh.
And yes, Chrome's Shōnen Battle thread is pretty useful as I've watched 2 or 3 animes from the series when it was running. Might find something good in the current Psychological Battle thread as well, who knows
