Back in the day, when there wasn't much anime available, I would watch whatever I could find. Now I'm much more picky. I check out the art style and read reviews, and if I can find some trailers or previews, I'll watch them.

In my case I have a list of "non-negotiables" (as that matchmaker lady calls 'em). To me a decent anime, regardless of genre cuz I watch 'em all from mecha/ action (generally what boys like) to yaoi (boys love) must have at least four or more of the following to keep my interest.

1. Varying character types (these are your over the top cliques like the busty airhead, the cool "genius", the joker, the delinquent, etc)
2. Decent "battles" (to include powers, human strengths, or intellect)
3. An easy to follow plot line with cliffhangers (no point if the show sums up every episode and doesn't give you a "reason" to want to know what happens next)
4. A sense of humor (be it slap stick or ridicule)
5. Some form of conflict (if all the characters are living happy perfect lives it's boring, right?)
6. A lesson that can be learned (teamwork, persistence, yada yada)
7. More mature content/ language (Lets face it I'm 23 I outgrew cartoons in the Spongebob rating a loooooong time ago)
8. Romantic interests (I'm a girl and it opens up a lot of room to piggy back some of the above essentials)
9. Fluid and clear animation (robotech the original gave me bad, bad headaches)

And I'm sure I'm forgetting some... Between the poster, the reviews and the first two epi's if I don't see more than two of the above that show is no longer worth continuing for me. Not to say they aren't good in their own way or other people won't appreciate it but there's oodles of anime out there I have yet to see so no sense wasting time on something that doesn't fit in my cookie cutter.

I usually go by genre and art. I'm the same way manga too. I almost didn't watch Usagi Drop because it sounded kinda boring but when i saw the art i totally fell in love, same thing with Bokura ga Ita too.

when i choose to watch an anime that was never recommended to me or i never heard or seen of before, i usually choose to check it out because of one of the following:

It either has a cool name, the characters look cool. or from the way its drawn it just looks like its gonna be a good one.

Sometimes i watch a few episodes and don't like it and move on,
other times i fall in love with what i watched.

i wont do anything more than look at the the name and the screenshot for the first video because i think the story is much better when u charge into it head on without knowing what your into. which also keeps me from watching an anime just because i'm expecting to figure out how something from the description happens and all the way to that point the whole anime sucked.

So next time u see an anime with a cool name and or a cool cover. give it a try.. you'll never know if u like it or not

Wow I seriously didnt post on this when I first seen it? I usually choose by the Voice Actors in the series. I really have three favorite voice actresses and two voice actors and I watch a lot of anime due to what they have done and branch off from there. I have seen a lot of Yoai and Yuri that way too and some where good and the others I didnt get halfway through. However I did watch Strawberry Panic all the way through because of the end theme videos.

I usually just go ahead and watch whatever is available. Even if someone told me it sucks, or it has negative reviews, I still wanna see what all the fuss is about. If it sucks, then I just stop watching it. I don't feel likeive wasted time, because now I know that it is indeed horrible, and it feels that much greater when you watch an anime that's really good lol.

When I was first starting out with my anime hobby, I would go to Hulu.com and browse the Anime section. I would then glance at the premise and reviews for the shows and just started watching. I found a whole PLETHORA of gems this way. Nowadays, I'm a bit more privy to many different anime series, and I keep my ears and eyes open for what anime fans are recommending.

I have a list with anime people talk a lot about that I find interesting. I also divided this list into 12 and 24 episode series and serious and funny anime. When I decide to watch a series, I watch the first episode and then I decide whether I will watch it or not.

How i choose anime on crunchyroll is that first i search whatever genre of anime i feel like getting into at the time, then i read the summaries to see whether or not it sounds like it would be particularly interesting, i put those animes which i think would be interesting into my queue. From my queue i put in order the animes i'm most interested in first and then i check out the reviews, i also factor in how many episodes in the series. I will watch the first episode then i will watch the second even if the first in terrible, in the hope that the anime might suck me in a bit more by the next episode.

I hate judging a book by it's cover and i hate doing the same thing with anime's so i'm grateful for the fact that my computer doesn't allow me to see the posters of the anime. I've stumbled across many an excellent anime that generally might not have been as good at the start but then gets extremely good as the story unravels so I always try and push through and watch a decent part of an anime before casting in aside.
