Do you hide your anime enjoyment, or only let a few close friends share it with you?

or do you enjoy it openly and not try to hide it from people?

what about the people around you? does society in your area accept / tolerate anime as something to enjoy, or is it shunned and frowned upon? not by just a few people, but i mean would mostly everyone shun you for it

personally, i admit it freely. it's one of my major hobbies, and anyone who spends any amount of time around me will figure it out quickly enough anyways... so why hide it?

it's somewhat reasonably accepted in my area.. people who are into it are into it, and people who aren't just don't seem to care. mostly, people think of "cartoons" when you talk about it, like pokemon and the like.. aimed at kids. but seems to be somewhat growing in popularity among young adults. maybe just the early-adopters growing up?

I know for me it depends on the situation and the people. If they are in my age group then I am more likely to say it but I certainly don't start off with "Hi I'm XXXX and I am an Otaku." Basically if they get to know me they find out pretty fast that I like anime.
Also on family gatherings I don't bring it up much. For EX. Grandma "Have you seen any good movies lately?" Me "Yeah did you know that they recently had a collaboration with Lupin the 3rd and Detective Conan?" It just wouldn't make sense.
Yeah I guess in my area it all depends on who you meet. People who don't know it usually think of it as cartoons but with Adult Swim getting so popular that is beginning to go away.

for me i tell people i want to tell normally noone cares or just says you like anime what kind? for my parents they don't care i like anime so i can just tell who ever i want really lol

I'm 51 years old and I watch anime with my sons 20 & 17, hell I was the one to introduce anime to them well before they reached their teens. I am very open about my enjoyment of anime and tell those who will listen that it's the art, storylines, and the adult level violence that make me come back for more. I just wish that we as Americans would stop treating cartoons like it's only for kids.

From my perspective, it's kind of like music. If you come over to my place e watch anime, if I come to yours, maybe not.

Depends if the person in question is a jerk and thinks anime = porn somehow. sigh some people will never get it.

I admit it openly. Depending what state I'm in at the time, its known that I either love Japanese things, or "Chinese stuff" haha. I can't see a reason for hiding why I like it...I mean even when I was the weird kid in school (before I became popular) I never hid it, and it certainly didn't help me then.

I think when you treat something like its the norm, people minds won't have a chance to question your interests. You have to like your hobbies like they're pure concrete facts, and not leave room for others opinions. I don't know if that makes sense to others, but its how I treat all my interests and I'm never questioned or mocked.

If someone were to ask me about it, or I noticed that they have an interest in it, then I talk about it, but otherwise I just keep it to myself. I've always been that way about everything though, I'll give information on my interests if someone directly asks me about that certain interest, otherwise I wont say anything about it for no real reason.

I admit it freely. Anyone who walks in to my apartment or my room will notice it right away. I'm lucky I've always had friends who loved it as much as I do. Heck I've even gotten my Mom to watch some with me and she agreed it was really good.

I'm not afraid to tell people I watch anime, but I usually won't mention it unless it comes up in conversation. I agree with anybody who said that there is really no justifiable reason to hide it in most cases if you treat it like a normal thing.
