I love anime, I will tell anyone who will listen how much I love it. I always ask new people if they're into anime. The biggest response I have gotten so far is: "What's anime?" If you have to ask, you're not into it. I hate to admit it, but I have no anime friends in real life and very few online. : (

Like any other interest of mine, I don't particularly try to hide it, but neither do I make it a point to bring it up in conversation every time or otherwise wear it on my sleeve. If my memory still serves me correctly, the highschool world was more judgmental based upon irrelevant things, and civility was sometimes just a word on a vocabulary test as opposed to a thing to be actually practiced. I suppose those still in that world might be compelled to hide it just to survive in relative peace-- too bad, really, but perhaps a fact of life for some.

In the adult world (or at least in MY adult world-- others' personal experiences may differ, I'd guess), people are generally well-mannered enough that if they harbor ideas that anime is "porn" or "childish" or "deviant," they don't fling it in your face. But, it goes both ways-- I don't fling it in their faces either, or exude contempt on those who don't like or know anime as some sort of uncultured troglodyte. I try to carry myself in a manner worthy of respect (treat others well, do a good if not excellent job, help out the team, consider those around me, try not to be a schmuck etc...), and when the topic of anime somehow arises around the watercooler, the other person might then think this guy I'm talking to, who seems a pretty normal if not decent guy, likes "anime," and so maybe this "anime" thing isn't as bizarre as I thought. They might then ask a few questions, at least to make conversation, and I can then "share the gospel" a bit. More often than not, they decide it's not their thing, and the conversation turns to something else, but at least we understand each other a bit more. Among my friends and acquaintances, only my Japanese conversation partner enjoys anime enough to discuss it from time to time. My wife will at least tolerate me blabbing about it too.

I don't hide it at all! I walk around with my Izaya (Durarara!!) bag and have all my charms on my phone... but I'm an adult and I pay all my own bills so I don't really care if other people think it's weird. However I do sometimes get that random person that goes... ahh!! Izaya... omg.. you like anime too... awesome! Mostly this happens in the bookstore while I'm standing in front of the manga section.. but it happened the other day at the grocery store.. the checker was like.. omg is that Izaya from Drrr on your bag? I always go to her line now and we always chat about whatever anime we're watching at the time. But it seems like most people don't really care that I like anime... why would they?

I'm not yelling it from the top of my lungs or anything. People who first meet me don't usually think I'm a gamer or into anime. I dress really professional and am the quiet and shy type. Then when I make friends and they come over its like WHAM!, anime and games everyone. Posters, anime clocks, dvds, games, manga, I have it advertising my living room. Then they learn pretty quickly, but by that point they usually accept it for who I am. However if I'm asked bluntly, "Hey do you like anime?" I'll answer truthfully; no I don't like anime, I love it.

When I was younger and moved from an area that loved Pokemon to a place where you were looked down on for it. I hesitantly hid my Pikachu backpack, I was in Elementary school, I just wanted to make friends. Then I found some who were even more into anime than I was, it made me realize that it was stupid to hide one of my favorite hobbies; it was a part of who I was and making friends who look down on that aren't really friends at all anyway.

I'm 51 years old and I watch anime with my sons 20 & 17, hell I was the one to introduce anime to them well before they reached their teens. I am very open about my enjoyment of anime and tell those who will listen that it's the art, storylines, and the adult level violence that make me come back for more. I just wish that we as Americans would stop treating cartoons like it's only for kids.

i only admit it to those who actually know what anime is.
anime isn't really known in my neighborhood, so even if i DO admit it, i won't have anyone to talk to about it ):
