Sooo, CR, what do you think of music & movie piracy? Have you ever done it? Why? Do you think it's wrong, or right?

ME: Mediafire is my best friend. I mostly download Korean & Japanese music that I cannot afford... I don't download movies...

I don't blame people who pirate crap movies.
(I saw those AVP and Scary(Scary movie 2,3,4 and all movies by those people) movies, crap like that made me support movie piracy ~.~

Can we have more choices than 'wrong' or 'right?'

As a person who has been paid in the past for writing...I want to get paid! Really! But if I write something for the public, something with real thought and a real point, I want it to be read. It depends on what I write, but in general I'd rather be paid $500 and be read by a million people than get paid $1000 and be read by a thousand.

But if I wrote something, some random editor snagged it while it was under review and published it without permission in his own little 'zine, even if it had my name on it I would probably be a little bit pissed. But I would also recognize that if it had my name, and wasn't modified, I might get some valuable exposure.

There are really very many potential viewpoints on this matter. I am rather certain that the various internet music services have publicized a lot of bands that might never have received national or international coverage in any other way. With that publicity comes opportunity. But a well-established band is losing a hell of a lot of potential revenue... if you were performing for 20+ years, everyone knew your name, and you were losing $500,000 a year because someone bootlegged your work...you can't tell me you wouldn't be a tiny bit annoyed.

Well, I think if these media companies would look at why people are pirating their property and maybe try to improve their products, then maybe that would help alleviate the problem a lot. The thing is, pirating will never, ever completely go away. I don't care how many laws you pass, how strict you make the punishments, there will always be someone out there willing to pirate your property. The point is not to try and eliminate it, but to make it so that people prefer to get it legitimately. In other words, be competitive. Of course, there will always be those willing to get it for free because they simply don't want to pay for it, but they will be much fewer because most people would rather have a better product. Of course, government regulation also adds to the problem, particularly in the form of censorship laws. If people can get their anime (as an example) straight out of Japan as is, without crap taken out of it, then they'll be more likely to go with legitimate ways of acquiring it, and even more so for anime or whatever that simply isn't allowed into their country.

If you steal the creative work of other people, and they are unable to profit from their ideas and work, then they will move on to something else. Becoming famous because everyone stole your work, if your name remains on it or not, won't pay the mortgage or put groceries on the table. Some person, most likely many persons, put time, energy, money, thought and life into those products and just because you think you're special and shouldn't have to pay doesn't make it so. Do you do your job for praise and accolades? Or do you do it for the money? Praise is nice, but cash pays for the booze you need after a long day at work.

My Dad wrote copyrighted music for Hollywood "back in the day" (1920-1936), arranged music for some of the big bands back in that era also and earned a ton of money while doing it (think of $35,000 USD annually buying power in terms of 1930's-era). He left the business because of the hypocrisy and pirating. It was impossible to enforce copyrights unless he spent 300% of his existence suing and harassing the perps. So, in almost 90+ years it appears pirating is still omnipresent, only the techniques for acquisition have gotten more pervasive.

I don't think piracy or copyright violations can be stopped, ever. Trouble is, the technological invasive attempts to intercede being created (ACTA, SOPA, PIPA et al) to protect copyrighted material is going to enslave us all: do-gooders and ne'er-do-wells alike. And it looks like it will even happen in my lifetime......bad, so sad.....not just for me but everyone. I don't know the right answer to prevent piracy but I do know the slippery slope we're on sacrificing freedom to choose for the "being fair" route re copyright protection is not the answer.

K-pop and J-pop. And also, some british/american music should be over here but it is just unbearbly hard to find. HMV has lowered its standards a great deal recently.

Please, I don't even know how to download videos and anime onto my computer. I'm terribly ridiculous.
