Thank you CR because there's no way I would buy this the way Aniplex is selling it.

Now just get Bakemonogatari and Ano Hana and you'd be on top of the otaku world.

Its not licensed in many countries outside of Japan yet (if ANN or Wiki are anything to go by), unfortunately (and curiously, for something which seems to have been endlessly praised and is very popular).

Incidentally, if the series is being released in the US, how were CR able to stream it for free? Aren't the license-owners shooting themselves in the foot there? Especially if they're charging the best part of 100 dollars for the show, surely no-one who can access this site in the US - subscription or no - would bother forking out that much if all they want is to try the show out. Unless I'm misunderstanding something.

Hulu and Crackle will also be streaming Madoka. Coupled with the ad revenues from that and a chance for people to see the series and then maybe go and buy the DVDs, Aniplex probably figured it to be a decent move.

If everyone has already seen it, does that mean people here are still watching the unlicensed sites...?)

well duhh.. i mean, not to be a prick about it, but what did you expect? (technically, i imagine bittorrent is still the number 1 source, but that's splitting hairs)
i saw it like 6 months ago, and it was already "old" by then. it -finished- airing almost a year ago. i made this same complaint the other day in.. some other thread... that if the companies who license anime are just going to sit on it for a whole year, and then release it for like 40 bucks for 4 eps (price i heard quoted in this thread)... is there -really- any surprise that fansubbing has no end of supporters?
so like.. 120 bucks, give or take, for a half-length series. admittedly, a REALLY awesome series, but it's only one series. again, and they WONDER why anime has trouble catching on and making sales here. WTF..

I think they should offer a "per series" rate where you can pay one month's rate and get premium access to the first episode of each series and then ongoing access to two series of your choice for four months from the start of the season. That would make it easier for people with limited access to make the choice to subscribe for one or two series, and then the extra subscribers would make it easier for Crunchyroll to get more streaming rights for that country.

i like that idea. very clever. $7 or whatever, to get premium access for a series you -can- watch, plus it shows you support series X, and you're from region Y.

mind you, A; i'm from canada, so i do get to watch pretty much everything anyways.
and B; i think the whole idea of region-limiting for a service like CR is just stupid and dinosaur-ish.
i know it's out of CR's hands... i just wish that the companies in charge would pull their heads out of their butts.

If you decide to watch, do so at least through episode 3.

As I recall, that was the point where most people that viewed it when it originally aired acknowledged that it wasn't just another magical girl show.

episode 3... oh episode 3... eeehheeehehehehehee... *grins and giggles giddily*

yea.. Madoka Magika is NOT your typical mahou shojo series.

my interest in PMMM originally came from this little guy... /( ◕ ω ◕ )\ (lol, Kyuubei, the series' mascot critter)
and at first i thought it was just another cute mahou shojo type anime, with a bit of a trippy twist to it..
but then after watching the 3rd ep... yeaaaaa... things change.

I like the idea of the first three episodes of a series being free for everyone and then paying something like $7 for each 13 episodes. It still doesn't solve the root problem of region licensing but as mentioned it might help determine what is popular in certain areas. Then again, you don't know what's popular until you give people a chance to view it, first three episodes or none.

There are certainly many possibilities distributors and streaming companies like CR could take but I read an article on Netflix a while back that mentioned both consumers and companies like the ease of paying one flat rate per month because it's such a simple and hassle-free business model.

ehhmm...no i think we're going backwards now.
erm, being more conscious now, for whatever reason... i've realized that this is -downgrading- from what is currently offered.

for $7/mo you can already get premium access to -all- the anime available in your area.
as for "other" anime.. well, CR doesn't have the rights to decide which areas/users that they can provide an anime to.

which is too bad.. i've said it before and i'll keep saying it.. the anime suppliers really need to pull their heads out of their butts and stop saying "no, we don't want to make money all over the world."

yes Yes YES! I am definitely going to buy this one! Hopefully they will have a boxed set (yea, I know I'm dream'n), and I wish they had a DVD/Blue Ray combo pak - but at the very least, I'll get the 3 BDs. Can't wait for Godoka!
