Pft. He's the weird one for asking that to a random stranger that he just met.
Be careful with how much personal information you decide to share online and with whom.
I only give my number to online friends that I can trust and have known for a long time.

Don't let that guy's response bother you for even a second-- you did the right thing in being cautious. With the relative anonymity of the internet, all sorts of creeps and predators come out of the woodwork, and I'd say you can't be too careful and always need to be on your guard-- even while enjoying the forum experience and international communications and so on.

No one has ever asked my phone number before online, except for a few cases where I've already been communicating with the person for some time and/or have some other mutual trusted connection vouch for that other person. Except for official business-type transactions, I'd never give such information to a stranger.

I don't give my number to my boss or coworkers. They'd light up my phone just to harass me about work, so no thanks. No, he's the weird one.

Why would anyone give their number to a stranger online in the first place. . .?

I don't give out my phone number to people I've known over the Internet for years. So no, I don't think that's weird at all.
