What if you've known them online for 5 years?

Then it's okay since you probably know each other really well by then ^^

Yeah I know that, I was curious as to what the person I quoted would say.

Oh yeah sure... give out your number to someone online you've ever met if you wanna get stalked. Of course I am being saracastic. I know some people do, but I would never give out personal details to someone online no matter how long I had known them. People are just ignorant of the dangers.

Stalked? Are you aware that you can block numbers? Besides, I'm talking about myself in the example. I know a kid the same age of me, proved to me he ain't a paedophile by going on skype, actually. What about then? Is it still a risk to give him a number? I think not.

I'd say it's weird to give your number to somebody online, but then again, I met my husband online, so it would be the pot calling the kettle black.

If you are underage, make sure you get the OK from parents/guardians. This way, if something does go wrong, people know who you were talking to prior to anything happening.

ROFL Do mates you met IRL kill you? Nope. And that's what it's currently like, this I regularly hang out with him. I'd like to take this time and point out that you are not in further education and you do not have a job. Therefore, you are a waste of space. Please don't criticize anything I do until you make something of yourself.

It is weird to give out your number in the very first conversation. Giving your number away is a show of trust, you don't have kind of trust so early. After talking a lot, and getting a feel of the person, it might be wise starting with skype if you wish to further develop things. Perhaps video after that, and if you ever decide to meet up with that person - do it somewhere safe with lots of people.

The good ol' warning sign from several years ago is pretty valid. Tell someone you know about the meeting and such. Better safe than sorry, so lots of precautions till you know for certain.

I don't think giving out a phone number is a big deal. Maybe just spare the number for the home phone if other people live with you. But a personal cell number is fine.
