I feel like anti fans exist just because the product is out there. Not everyone is going to like something. As consumers, we all have our different tastes, just because they don't like the product it just means they won't go out of their way to support it, other then that, It's impractical for them to do anything really serious against it.

I've seen many people take their fandoms to the extreme. But as long as they don't demand me to join in, I don't care. Why would it bother me? It's their life. I don't see how it would affect me or how I or anyone else have any right to be annoyed by it. unless of course they are fans of something really creepy and wrong like porn.
Even if people try and back up their hatred with the excuse that the fans are too much, it is still just an excuse at the end of the day. You can't justify hating someone because of their interests just because they have a really strong interest in it.

Okay. Justify? Hating?

It's called free speech, Someone else is free to say "Plan 9 from Outer space" is the Greatest Movie EVAH and dress up like Ed Wood even for jury duty.

I'm free to feel amusement or contempt or envy at his or her bravery. I'm also free to express those feelings.

When a bunch of screaming tweens have are having a group meltdown outside a record store and blocking the side walk that you have to share with them. I think you have the right express dismay or annoyance. When a DJ for a hard rock station constantly gets requests for 'beiber bieber beiber' They have a right to sound a little peeved. When you hear about someone making a religion out of being a Jedi, or wearing their star trek uniform to jury duty. Weather you are amused, contemptuous, or in awe you have a right to express those feelings. If someone hijacks a forum discussion about your elitist artsy anime with some rant about how DBZ in the best and how dare they care. People will respond.

Yes, sometime people are unnecessarily nasty. There are a lot of cruel people in the world, and the impulse to cruelty, I think, is suppressed rather than absent in many of those who aren't cruel.

But to say it's all a kind of bullying and trolling I think is an error. And nothing you said convinces me that if something annoyed me, that I don't have the right to say 'I'm annoyed'

yes you can be annoyed but you can not justify being an antifan, verbally abusing or trolling people, or hating a person for that reason only. freedom of speech does not mean it is ok to be cruel and insult people

It sounds like we have different definitions of what constitutes an 'anti-fan' and possibly 'verbal abuse' and 'trolling'. If you call any negative expression 'verbal abuse' then we are at a point of rupture and I cannot agree. If you are saying that only extreme verbal negativity and trolling constitute being an anti-fan then we might have room to agree as I suspect my definition of anti-fan is looser than yours.

If you're saying fans can do what they like free of criticism, or complaint then No again we cannot agree.

(edit, bold and PS)

Actually freedom of speech, sadly, DOES mean it's okay to be cruel and insult people. Speech laws differ from country to country but mine draws on british traditions. one place the protections of free speech do not extend to is slander and libel. Slander is if you say it, Libel is if you write print it it. In both cases 'it' is the crime of expressing an untruth that hurts the reputation or stature of another person.

In Canadian Law, like British law. The burden of proof is on the person who is alleged to have committed the crime. In a reversal of 'innocent until proven guilty'. So if I publish an assertion such as:

'Eclaire-Lumaire is a closet gay nazi who slept with Marilyn Monroe'

And you sue me for libel, I have to prove in a court of law that you really are a closet homosexual Hitlerite who slept with JFKs mistress. Else, I'm guilty and can face stiff damages depending on how much that assertion 'hurt' you.

If we were both american i'd be more free to be a dick. Because in the above example the burden of proof would be on you. you would have prove in court that you weren't any of those things AND THEN would have to prove that I knew your actual sexual orientation, political leanings, and love life and that I deliberately made false statements with "malice aforethought' (the intent to hurt you.)

Likewise the Americans don't care about Hate speech, they freely allow Nazis, White supremicists, Homophobes and haters from the other side of those fences to stage rallies and parades and speak publicly.

In Canada The Human Rights Commissions pursue 'Hate speech' which is NOT considered protected under our free speech and press laws. Nazi's don't get to talk about the world jewish conspiracy. National Magazines have to be careful about what they say regarding Muslims. etc.

But outside of those limits free speech unfortunately is freedom to be a dick. The only consolation is that you are protected from someone getting 'offended' about something YOU think YOU have a right to say. and additionally free speech means others are free to challenge your own assertions. and free to express their opinions.

So yes people have the right to be cruel and insulting. But ... we have the right to call them haters for it.

Internet trolls live under the bridge of popularity.

Not participating or looking to expand on the difference of trolls vs. just not liking something.

To simply hate something because of its fans is pretty stupid, people have their ways of expressing what they like, you should judge things about how you like it not the other fans

I think it's funny that most "anti-fans" actually watch whatever they are hating on more than the "fans." They seem to know as much if not more about their "targets." in some cases, such as Naruto, I find there are "filler haters" that love the show, but blast those who don't mind filler so much. In other cases, like Bleach, I find the hating well founded, cause the latest arc sucks. And it feels like the production team is just beating a dead horse. I keep watching though, to see if it will ever obtain its former glory. And I find that frustration builds after a while.

I also happen to notice this is more common among older, more well established shows that might have more than one series in the story.
Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball, One Piece. I find that the new eps just are not as epic as my memories of old eps that haven't been viewed in years, and it always seems like the series are going downhill, which in my opinion will also lead to frustration and the "hate" being thrown around at new fans who are feeling the love of the series for the 1st time.

For example, my fondest memories of any game I've ever played was for FF7. I recently downloaded a port of it for PC and was instantly disapointed cause the reality didn't live up to the memory. So I turned it off after 45min and deleted it rather than farther tarnishing the memory of a great game.

'Eclaire-Lumaire is a closet gay nazi who slept with Marilyn Monro
e'

What the hell is wrong with you? I just can't seem to have a reasonable discussion with someone on here. And for your information, freedom of speech does not mean you can be a dick. Ever hard of discrimination laws?
And if you think an antifan simply means not liking something then you are an idiot. An antifan is someone who goes around trolling everyone who likes whatever they have chosen to discriminate against. So for example, an anime antifan would call anime fans "weeaboo" and say that they should die just for liking anime. And probably use a lot of swear words too.

And FYI, you managed to spell my name wrong even though it is right in front of you.

Obviously, I have mispoken The statement to which you have taken to such offense that you apparently did not read the rest of the post was meant ( I thought obviously, since Marilyne Monroe died before most of us here were born). to be obviously silly and ridiculous EXAMPLE of a libelous or slanderous statement. I'm sorry that I failed to carry that off with you.

I'm willing to agree that we have different definitions of 'anti-fan'. There's no need to call me an idiot for it. At no time have I intentionally treated you with contempt or mocked your opinions. Since it's a made up word we are free to disagree on our definitions.

Discrimination laws do not challenge free speech. They challenge applications of policies such as hiring practices, legal enforcement, school admissions and the like which appear biased against certain groups. Discrimination itself is not a bad word. I discriminate against vanilla and caramel every time I buy chocolate ice cream. Coke and Pepsi eagerly encourage you to discriminate between them, claiming that they taste better (or make you more cool) than the other. Human rights legislation says there's certain aspects to people that you cannot discriminate against. In my country (I don't know how yours is worded) it's Sex, Race, Sexual orientation and Religion. Current practice on a federal level and more specific legislation in my province includes Gender expression under sex. Calling me a weaboo because I like anime is not a violation of those laws. Calling me a fag and suggesting that I shouldn't be allowed to work in my current job because I'm a member of the LGBT community IS such a violation. Where we get into gray territory is when free speech slides over into Harrassment, and Bullying. Most work places and public organizations have policies against such behaviour many of them are well enforced. But they are not laws. They are internal policy for a collection of people.

I pretty much agree with everything you just said. Here are some other things to add. People use their judgement to seperate what they like and dislike all the time. It is not necessarily a bad thing. I don't like coffee. I don't go up to coffee lovers and say "You like coffee? Why don't you go buy a 100$ gift card to Starbucks you hipster!!" However, if lots of people come up to me and say "Try coffee it is the greatest. Tea sucks." I am almost naturally inclined to go a-wol rambo style in their faces. Someone sees me going A-wol Rambo style and says "Yeah I hate coffee too" and joins in. Then we start hanging out and find we have more in common .... thus the anti-fan is born.
Hope that metaphor made sense.

On another topic - I like Naruto but even some of the Naruto fanboys piss me off. I dislike Vampire Knight. Seeing all the fangirls go on and on about it upsets me. Thus the backlash.

Btw I don't like coffee or tea :P

I really don't care what you say now. Yes it was just an example, but that statement you said is just mad so there must be something wrong with you for thinking of that.

It was a meme. There was time, when you were possibly non-existent and I was much younger that people complained that when they died the tabloids were going to post that they were really closet gay nazis who slept with Marylynne Monroe. Most of the men then smirk say 'only the last one is true' even if they were like, age 2, when she died. It was meant to be totally random and over the top. since we're throwing accusations around now instead of speaking civilly I counter that you must have issues to be so ready to assume everything is an attack upon you.

But since you don't care. I guess we are done. Have a nice life.
