So I haven't been on this site in... a while. The anime club at my middle school (I was too chicken to join, because I didn't want to be made fun of) gave me a brochure with this website on it and that's what got me into anime in the first place. Before, all I'd seen was stuff on Toonami.

Anyways, I finally made an account about 5 years ago after lurking for a year or two. Then Crunchy Roll pretty much got shut down and their entire library was wiped (for legal reasons). Now I see that they've stocked about about 1/10 of what they had, but all of it legit (and mostly popular shonen stuff). And there's a lot of other stuff too (there's tabs!).

For those of you who stuck with it, what happened between the time I left and now?

There were music (mainly kpop and jpop), amvs, manga, anime, dramas... These were all uploaded by users. Instead of premium membership, there was star membership. It was pretty much the same, but much cheaper. The forums were a lot more fun then. Chat was deleted, except for crunchyland. Oh, crunchyland was created. Although, nobody plays that anymore... There's also a gaming section on this site. I'm surprised it's still there.

To be honest, other than the whole legalizing ordeal, nothing has really changed. It's just the members. Almost all of the old members are gone.

mmmm, let's see...

been a member for 4 years now and haven't been active since 2 years ago so.....

yeah, I remember having all free animes, no anime membership?? (not sure for this one!!). but then shows start getting licensed so now it's a legal site! whoo! I can't pretty much remember how crunchyroll looks like before though....

but ah well, there used to have profile musics (there is still now but only for premium members something)
lots of animes, movies, and musics you can watch for free
forums spamming and trolling are quite okay (pretty much )
chatroom!
crunchyroll pulse!!
and there used to have a black menu bar at the bottom of the screen like at 2009 or 2010 I think

well, that's pretty much I can remember x)

mm... lots of people on the forum who cuss and say the most obscene things they can think of, all for the sake of getting a rise out of you ^_^

➽ Music on profiles for everyone, not just users with memberships
➽ A lot more trolls and blunt crude people, but at least some were funny
➽ The awesome toolbar >:/
➽ More anime shows and I think music videos, but they were here illegally unfortunately
➽ The chatroom. I never liked it that much, but it was nice to use it with some of the people I talked to
➽ I think the search engine was more dependable then than it is now
➽ The layout was simple and better (to me it was)
➽ CR groups were active more
➽ My attitude towards certain members lol

Trolls have always been here. They were a LOT cruder and more to the point than trolls now.

4chan was just rising every single guy who regularly frequented 4chan thought they qualified as troll.

There was a lot of hate for Naruto. You couldn't walk into the Anime forum saying you liked Naruto without a bunch of trolls flaming you to the ends of the earth.

Every single argument was compared to Hitler or the Nazis. Anyone who mentioned Hitler would be applauded as some sort of deity.

Twilight was cool back then. I remember being the only one on the forum who hated Twilight and composing an essay on why Twilight SUCKED, just to quell my hatred.

I remember Baka-God, and I was on here way before that dude. All the awesome trolls are gone.

Avatar/gfx making was so in back then? Anyone remember Avatar-Making Jenny Chan and Leilockheart? The latter seems to be back. For now.

And for god's sake, when I first came to CR forum games were so dead they didn't give a shit if you spammed the (*Q#$&(*$_(@_#$_ out of that place.

Bah good times. Now CR is lame because they took away all of the anime especially MONSTER which I did NOT get to finish watching and a lot of cool people disappeared. Forums are also incredibly dead.

A lot has really changed. General Discussion and the Anime forums were always so active; lots of banning, spamming, flaming etc. And I remember before that the gif was definitely not fucked up, animes and dramas were free (but illegal) and almost every user had a "CR Family". There was also chatrooms.

Ahh, nostalgia.

I think the best way to sum it up, is to say that some good things were lost, and some good things were gained.

As the posters above have already mentioned, the site seemed more alive back then, in a sense anyway. I miss the quality of certain fansubs, but mostly I miss the vast selection this site used to have, anime, jdrama, kdrama, films, music.
I think the changes that have been made in terms of legality and payment are most definitely a step in the right direction, but as yet it's not enough, not by far.

They've managed to get some quality stuff onto this site since the switch, and for that I'm terribly grateful, but I find myself unwilling to fork out for an anime membership due to certain titles being unavailable in for non-US members, despite whether or not they're paying members. Not CR's fault, I know, and I'm not holding this against them, but it's sort of like you and a friend ordering a pizza each, paying the same amount of money, yet you get a plain cheese and tomato and he gets all the meat toppings. Living outside a city in the UK doesn't really mesh well with enjoying and watching anime, I'm sorry to say. Sure there's DVD box sets and whatnot which you can get via mail order, but sadly I'm nowhere near wealthy enough to keep up with the amount of titles that I want to watch via direct purchasing (And I don't think many are).

I hope that one day CR will be able to fully partner with Japan's anime and drama industry, and East Asian cinema in general, and bring us a far greater library from which to choose from. Until then, I'll remain grateful that this site is even here at all.

I joined CR september 2010 because when I was in the 9th grade my friend invited me to the anime club, we saw shugo chara and I liked it. I asked her where I could watch and I joined CR to comment on the videos;then I started chatting here, don't watch anime here whatsoever anymore since CR has ads and other useless shit where I can get for free somewhere else.
