Synopsis:
Talk of merging the financially beleaguered Yume City with a neighbouring municipality is underway. Even the music hall which was a symbol of the once flourishing “town of music” has been slated for demolition to make way for a garbage disposal facility. On the other hand, legendary musical star Kurasaka Mio (Amami Yuki) who hails from Yume City finds herself out of luck when she suffers a setback in New York’s Broadway. Asked by her hometown teacher to make over the chorus group called the ‘Chansons’ which is now in a precarious position along with the music hall, the lofty Mio comes back to Japan. She teaches them to take a step forward and to never give up no matter what happens, but they are repulsed by her drastic teaching methods. On the other hand, Isaka Chuko (Ishida Yuriko), the daughter of the mayor responsible for promoting the merger and a key member of the ‘Chansons’, struggles to rally the group. Chuko comes from a family that has carried on the tradition of Japanese imperial court music. She has a younger husband (Koizumi Kotaro) and lives modestly but life gets eventful with Mio’s apperance … … Mio the maverick tries to redefine the notion of choral singing and introduce dancing to transform the ‘Chansons’ into a show choir. However, this meets with opposition from the conservative Chuko who tries to uphold traditions. Amami Yuki to star in upcoming musical drama ‘Kaeru no Oujo-sama’

Fuji TV has just announced that actress Amami Yuki will be starring as a legendary musical star in a new drama called ‘Kaeru no Oujo-sama‘.

‘Kaeru no Oujo-sama’ is going to be a musical drama about a “Mamasan Korus” (“Mothers’ Choir”) that is on the verge of breaking up. Many great songs are going to be featured in the drama and Amami will finally get to showcase her beautiful voice again since her days as a top star of the famous Takarazuka Revue. Another highlight is going to be the performance of actress Ishida Yuriko, who will challenge singing and dancing for the first time in her career.

Amami’s character is going to be that of a legendary musical star who just returned to Japan after several setbacks on the Broadway in New York. Back home, she’s going to use all of her energy and experience to help a Mamasan Korus called “Chansons” from having to break up. In order to do that, she modifies the concept of a chorus by adding dancing to their performance. Naturally, this idea isn’t going well with everyone in the chorus, especially one very conservative housewife (Ishida) aggressively opposes her unconventional ideas.

Every episode is going to feature one or two famous songs from the 1970s (such as THE BOOM’s “Kaze ni Naritai” or Kome Kome Club’s “Roman Hikou“), various enka songs, and of course many great pop songs.

The voice training for the members of the “Chansons” already began earlier this month at Fuji TV in Odaiba, Tokyo. Just like after school lessons, the actresses are coming together every day in order to hone their singing voices.

Amami commented, “There are going to be a lot of refreshing and songs suitable for our generation, but I think there are also a lot of great numbers that the younger people will enjoy. It would be great if everyone was going to sing them together with us in their living rooms or together with their friends at the karaoke.”

Fuji TV is planning to air ‘Kaeru no Oujo-sama’ every Thursday at 10:00 p.m.

Oshima Yuko, Katase Nana & more added to the cast of musical drama ‘Kaeru no Oujo-sama’

On March 7th, Fuji TV announced more characters of their upcoming musical drama ‘Kaeru no Oujo-sama‘ (‘Princess of the Frog’), starring Amami Yuki.

‘Kaeru no Oujo-sama’ is a musical drama about a legendary musical star (Amami) who has just returned to Japan after several setbacks on the Broadway in New York. Back home, she will be using all of her energy and experience to help a Mamasan Chorus, “Chansons”, from having to break up. In order to do so, she modifies the concept of a chorus by adding dancing to their performance. Naturally, this idea doesn’t sit well with everyone in the chorus, especially one very conservative housewife (Ishida Yuriko), who aggressively opposes Amami’s unconventional ideas.

Among the additions to the cast is AKB48 member Oshima Yuko, who will be able to fully utilize her versatile entertaining skills by combining acting, singing, and dancing. Oshima will be playing a college student who is currently hunting for a job but has already received 53 consecutive rejections. She’s also a member of the “Chansons”, but due to her timid nature, she has problems adjusting to the strict coaching of their new leader. Soon, she starts to think that she’s holding back the group, although she loves to sing more than anyone else.

The producer revealed that they picked Oshima because of her extraordinary expressive power when she’s singing and dancing. “There is no other actress with similar abilities,” he said.

Oshima herself commented, “Just like her, I do love singing, even though it’s not our strong point. She doesn’t lose to anyone with her love for singing, which is a feeling I can absolutely empathize with. I hope that her personal growth while she’s chasing her dream, as well as the great strength and unity of the ‘Chansons’ will reach the viewers. Since it’s the first time I have to sing as an actress, I’m going to be a lot more careful about my singing.”

More members of the chorus include Katase Nana, Tamayama Tetsuji, and Kikuchi Mika, who all play characters of the most diverse professions. Furthermore, Koizumi Kotaru is going to play the husband of Ishida Yuriko, while Kishibe Ittoku is going to disguise himself as the despicable mayor who tries to get rid of the “Chansons”.

Every episode will be featuring one or two famous songs, such as THE BOOM’s “Kaze ni Naritai”, and Kome Kome Club’s “Roman Hikou“, in addition to many songs from the from the 1970s, various enka songs, and of course many great pop songs.

Fuji TV will be airing ‘Kaeru no Oujo-sama’ every Thursday at 10:00 pm, with the first episode airing on April 12th.

On March 17th, it was revealed that singer-songwriter Fukuhara Miho will be making her drama debut in the upcoming drama, “Kaeru no Oujo-sama“.

Starring alongside actress Amami Yuki, Fukuhara will play the role of ‘Haneda Minami’, a former yankee and single mother who is a member of the “Mamasan Korus” (“Mothers’ Choir”).

The singer was added to the cast after Amami watched footage of her performing in a church in Los Angeles. Fukuhara expressed, “Everyday, I encounter new feelings that I’ve never felt before, but I won’t give in until the very end. I want to do my best while learning from my co-stars so that I can grow.”

After hearing that the drama aims to “brighten Japan up with music“, Fukuhara made her decision to participate. “I decided to take part in it because I wanted to become a part of that power with my music,” she explained.

Fukuhara made her major-label debut back in April of 2008 with “CHANGE“. In January of 2009, she released her first album, “RAINBOW“, then in June of 2010, she released her second album, “Music is My Life“. Fukuhara was also in charge of the theme songs for the films, “Shizumanu Taiyo” and “Akunin“, and just last year, she ventured out to Los Angeles for vocal lessons in order to further her music abilities.

Fuji TV producer Watanabe Tsuneya commented, “In order for the singing scenes to have persuasive power, we thought about having a professional singer as a member of the ‘Chansons’. I was drawn by Fukuhara Miho-san’s overwhelming skills and performance, that I needed her to participate.”

He shared that Fukuhara has already performed on set, and continued, “I feel that she is a very capable artist. Through this drama, I want her to further grow, not just in the Japanese music scene, but as an actress.”

“Kaeru no Oujo-sama” will air every Thursdays from 10:00 pm starting April 12th.
