Years ago I was warned by a friend not to watch Evangelion. He told me it was horrible. I thought he meant the series was horrible but no it was the... the plot, I guess. After having watched the whole series and the movies the ending stuck with me for days. I remember the popping people, the skeleton Rei and watching the writers sanity slowly go from somewhat OK to totally insane by the end. Did I hate the series? No but could I sit through it again? No. I couldn't put myself through that a second time. Anyone else feel that way?

It was reported because your thread is a duplicate. http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-3057/neon-genesis-evangelion Anyway I've chosen to lock the old thread and keep yours open since that thread was made years ago. ![]() |

I have seen the series, and, in my opinion, you only really need to see it once :)
I have seen the movies more than once though |

Evangelion - add enough violence, mecha, hot chicks, and cryptic religious references to make a shit load of cash. Even knowing this, yes I have seen it 3 times. also stareye_pink is awesome for what she did.

The ending didn't bother me. You sort of have to understand what Shinji went through psychologically and the whole point of the human instrumentality project.
The ending was definitely different from most animes, but I could care less since new movies seem like they will be much better than the series. |

NGE is a classic - also my personal fav anime of all time. All the people I know who don't like it either don't like that style of anime or don't understand it.

A personal favorite. I've probably rewatched the series at least 8 times over the last 5 years.
Part of the fun is going through End of Eva frame-by-frame. You get goodies like this: ![]() |

I'm not saying the series was at all bad. It's not that it's a bad anime so you can't watch it twice. It's that it's so, so (see pic above)

Oh, I can certainly see that. It definitely pulls one's self worth into question, which easily leads to depression. But I think that's what makes it such a good series. It's disturbing on so many levels. Also, I'm a fanatic for religious symbolism - they use it so well!

I love Evangelion, it's one of my favorite animes of all time. It was the first show that scarred my adolescent mind, and I've re-watched it twice since then. After the first time you sort of get used to all the mindfucking and then you can really appreciate the symbolism inherent in it.
I used to think Shinji was a wimp, but after watching it again I could appreciate the realism of his character... And his many, many issues... his issues are what make this anime so great. |

My love for Evangelion flows like blood from a severed artery.
![]() It's what got me back into anime a couple years back when I finally got my hands on the series. It's so deliciously chaotic one minute, and very serene and slice-of-life the next. I love the cryptic plot and the psychotic characters and how they spiral into madness. I adore it's mythology and all the religious symbolism. I get gooseflesh when Shinji screams (Megumi Ogata is phenomenal) or when I'm assailed with a seizure-threatening myriad of images for several seconds. My humble opinion is that the English dub is limp and impotent when compared to the original Japanese voice actors, who bring so much authenticity and depth to their characters. For me, watching Neon Genesis Evangelion is like standing in the middle of a hurricane and being bombarded by the wind while watching everything around you be destroyed - and realizing that it's profoundly beautiful. |
