Best anime series ever IMO. Watched it atleast 10times.
It would be a shame to NOT watch this legendary anime.

This best sums it up.
"If you're not a serious anime fan, the choice is simple: Does spending about 12 hours watching angst-ridden kids pilot giant, mysterious robots against the backdrop of political machinations, heavy Biblical imagery, and endless layers of psychological and metaphysical implications, wrapped up in a classy-looking mecha-action framework with an abstract, head-scratching climax sound like a worthwhile use of your time? If so, go get some."

For those who just refuse to rewatch it

When I first watched series it was definately hard to follow cause it wasn't like normal anime. It actually had super depth to suffering of the characters whether due to lack of love or family or heavy burdens of family obligation and what felt like real despair towards series end. Even though the series was plagued with bad comments and people who hated it to point they wrote death letters to writer; I myself liked it due to fact the emotion the writer put into this world and even reflected things that was going on with them in real life at similar time. It was definately an anime that made you think about a lot of stuff and open your eyes of stuff that could happen if our governments obtained anything on this scale. After all we'd be the guinea pigs for that research in N.E.R.V.

I watched the first few episodes in what must have been the late '90s, hate at first sight.

So I guess "I wouldn't even watch it the first time" is kind of an answer :p

~~~
I think its something you can't just be indifferent about though.
I always thought the original Eva was only a decent anime. I felt that the series did not become interesting until Asuka came in. I thought that the first rebuild movie was better because it was much prettier to watch, it got through the boring part a lot faster, and the voice acting was amazing compared to the original's, although it still suffered from the same problem as the original which was having a very slow start-up. It wasn't until I saw the second rebuild film that I came to the conclusion that the movie remakes were turning out much better than the original series (judging from what I have seen so far). This movie turned me into an Eva fan and now I love it. I currently own the original series, both movies, and now I am waiting for the next film and I can't wait.
I've watched the series and End of twice, and I don't know how many times I've watched the Rebuild films.
I prefer English-Dubbed Asuka over the Japanese, but Megumi Ogata's screen is a million times better than Spike's.
I love Evangelion, it's one of my favorite animes of all time. It was the first show that scarred my adolescent mind, and I've re-watched it twice since then. After the first time you sort of get used to all the mindfucking and then you can really appreciate the symbolism inherent in it.
I used to think Shinji was a wimp, but after watching it again I could appreciate the realism of his character... And his many, many issues... his issues are what make this anime so great.
BWAHAHAHAHA Absolutely mentally scarring!!! I was not right for at least a week or 2 after the first time I watched... maybe even a month! I don't even think at the time I knew what the hell I even saw... Correction, I definitely did not understand the ending... I remember grabbing D&R and EoE when they were on the new release wall of Blockbuster... and then... I think it scarred me WORSE because at the time, I misunderstood what occurred in a certain ...memorable... scene,even though someone corrected me immediately, it still didn't change the fact that's what I thought happened initially... *shudders* Adding to the confusion is the fact that I also might have watched it in English the first time because I was so dumb then I didn't know there /was/ a difference between dub and sub!!
Having seen it twice more in Japanese in the past 4 years, once was recently, while Shinji /seemed/ like such a punk brat, really, he's probably one of the more realistic anime characters, in that I find it a bit trite that upon being given these seemingly death sentence-like missions, the KIDS in these animes are always all like "Of course I will go on the suicide mission because you, [creature-I-thought-was-mythical-until-you-showed-up-and-told-me-I'm-the-chosen-one] told me to!!! ^_^" Shinji responded more like a /real/ person; real people fear the unknown, things that have traumatized them, and experience depression and sadness... a vast majority of anime characters do not react like normal people would. Doesn't mean I like them any less as characters, they /are/ fantasy stories after all! ^_^ But, for me, it sets NGE apart from so many others!
Definitely a classic, I don't care how mangled the ending is, I still love it!!!
And I was pleasantly surprised by how really well done the first 2 revamps have been!!! Honestly, I'm so glad they took Asuka down by like 90%, words can't express. They /might/ have gotten further than the 6th angel by episode 19 if they hadn't spent so long establishing "Asuka's a heinous bitch"!! <.<
Can't wait for the third part to come out!! ^_^
LMFAO did the certain memorable scene include Asuka, Shinji and a hospital bed? Or perhaps you were referring to the end where Shinji and Rei ended up in morphing together in an extremely convenient fashion. Oh, Shinji you silly lucky fucked up boy you.
Dub needs to die. That is all. I have watched many anime where people recommended "good, quality" dub like Nausicaa/Code Geass/Fullmetal Alchemist. I'm sorry but it's still not as perfect as the original.
I have a special place in my heart for Shinji. The first time I watched Evangelion I was a stupid kid back then and thought he was dragging down the momentum of the show, being stilted and boring. After becoming more mature and understanding the pain of depression I absolutely love him to bits. He is now my favorite character on the show. Watching scenes with him make me die a little inside, I want to hug him tight and tell him everything is gonna be fine and yet give him a good smack to MAKE him wake up and see that the WORLD needs you you stupid fuck! I also have respect for the boy. Wrestling with emotional/mental pain while trying to do stuff that only people lacking fear/a brain *cough Kamina cough* would do? He is nothing short of amazing.
Yeah I have always thought of NGE as not an inspiring show, but one that makes you feel with the characters. Plus of course there is the genius of Hideaki Anno who thought up half human/half robot mecha and... and making an art out of traumatizing his audience.
Ooh I have heard nothing but praise for the Rebuild of Evangelion, and even have it on my hard disk right now but I can't bring myself to watch it after hearing people talk about it. It seems like they have completely changed the characters into people who are more likable and less realistic (possibly making it more appealing to the general audience) just like any other anime. I have heard it is awesome though. But I don't want a badass Shinji, I want a moe Shinji who makes me want to carry him around in my pocket. I'll probably watch it with the mentality that the characters are completely different, and probably end up enjoying it, but for the time being I would like to bask in the original Evangelion that was written by a man plagued with depression and emotional issues rofl
OF COURSE certain memorable scene happened in a hospital bed with Shinji and Asuka!!!!!!!!!! Bwahahahahahaha I misinterpreted the scene initially, I thought that he, er, assaulted /her/ instead of himself. X_X I was corrected--clearly the look on my face spoke volumes--but the damage was already done!! haha
Yeah, ol' Shinji, surrounded by hot chicks, all complete with daddy issues (even the grown ones, he really wasn't thinkin clearly, was he???), and he does... nothing. <.< My husband's like yellin at the screen "Go Shinji, get it!!!!" "Aw hell naw, Shinji, come on!!!" ...I certainly don't think Shinji would have worked as an American boy, or at the very least, certainly not the vast majority of them.
As for dubs, I mean that's okay for /other/ people, bwahaha... I might preview something in English (if it's the /only/ option), and if I find myself pulled into even a DUB, well then, that's all the self-recommendation I need to find it in Japanese and watch!! I actually did that with FMA; I watched like 1 or 2 episodes in English streaming, liked it, and decided to just have Netflix send me the discs so I could watch it how I prefer.
Haha, I thought the same thing about the reboots of Eva!!!!!! Anytime something regarded as "classic" is redone, you can't help but be afraid it's going to be a complete and utter bastardization of the original ... but I watched it and I have to say, I really really enjoyed it... It's kind of like they rearranged, added, switched around, fixed the story's pace, as opposed to manic like the original series was. I'm not knocking the original, I still love it, but I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed a change on something I know so well and already liked so much! I don't recall thinking they toned it down... just cleaned it up.
ROFL it would actually be easy to misinterpret the scene seeing as how they did not actually *show* what was going on. And Shinji was so fucked up by that point you couldn't put it past him to do something truly horrifying.
Well apparently Hideaki Ano wanted to present Shinji as a girl in boy form so everything from his feelings, attitudes and reactions were supposed to mirror that of a girl's. There are guys out there who are very in touch with their feelings. XD
Okay, now you got me all excited about Rebuild LMAO I will watch it as soon as I get the time. MANRY Shinji, here I come~
Evangelion - add enough violence, mecha, hot chicks, and cryptic religious references to make a shit load of cash. Even knowing this, yes I have seen it 3 times. also stareye_pink is awesome for what she did.
Ok, what? Hot chicks? Other than Misato, the other female main characters are like 14 years old in the anime... I wouldn't focus on the mecha part too much either; they're pretty much playing second fiddle to the storyline.
Also, to the OP, did you watch The Ending Of Evangelion or are you talking about the original anime ending? As far as I understand, the original episodes 25 and 26 that aired on TV were what happened inside everyone's heads, psychologically. That might've just be a farfetched explanation to pacify the fanboys that went all murderlike once it first ended in Japan though.
