With the recent article about "Gravity Daze," "Gravity Rush" when it is released in the US, I've been wondering why they sometimes decide to change the titles of some games and anime for their US release. Sometimes it makes sense but other times as in the case of Gravity Daze/Rush it just doesn't make sense to me. Anyone have any insights?

If there is already a topic on this subject please point it out to me, I searched but didn't notice any in the first few pages of the search results.

Another one would be Beyblade Metal "Fight" changing to the title Metal "Fusion" in the states.

Sometimes it is simply marketing, at other times, it is to avoid negative connotations of a name.

There's an apocryphal story of the Chevy Nova. The story goes that the car wouldn't sell in Spanish-speaking countries since "Nova" sounded liked "no va" or "doesn't go". Obviously, you wouldn't want to buy a car that didn't work, right?

The story isn't true, but it is a good example of the kind of things that marketers worry about. They want to make sure that products entering new countries aren't sabotaged by silly things such as the wrong name. So, that's a major reason why we get renames like "Gravity Rush" and "Cat Planet Cuties" .

Seeing as 'Daze' and 'Rush' are two completely different words, it would make better sense for Gravity to 'Rush'...unless you're in space...then Gravity 'Dazes'...

Anywho, it's all about the marketing strategy.

There is no actual reason why they change the title to something different from it's original title. It's just a case on how things are in the business world.

As another example, one that directly relates to eclair-lumiere, a "bad" name can dissuade people from watching an otherwise good show.

Of course, I'm talking about "Kiddy Grade"

This is a good show. Like Madoka Magica, the initial episodes lead you to believe it has a lighthearted story, quickly changes starting in episode 3. It's good SF, and it really should have more fans than it does. Unfortunately, the name makes people think of pedophiles. I know plenty of people that have avoided "Kiddy Grade" because of the name.

you are referring to localization issues. Some times it comes up if game/anime is copyrighted here already or they change the name for selling point. I have done a small rant myself on the issue more on the side just to boost sales....

Sometimes the title doesn't make sense when translated into English as Japanese uses tottaly diffrent sentence formations. But other times when its a one word title i don't see a point in changing the title. Maybe they think the change would appeal to the US audience more?

Because corporations are stupid and don't have a real pulse on the anime fandom, just how much they can cash cow a title.

Case in point: Initial D.

plain and simple. Would you want the literal translation something like "DOG EAT PEE PEE FROM BUTT HOLE" or something more appealing like "The Last Battle of Space"?

At times a direct translation makes a title sound silly (or not making proper sense, kinda like translating a poem and making it not rhyme) , at other times changing it makes it sound silly.

More than the 'title' I'd be more worried about scenes that are edited out of the US version (manga too) and most of all the subtitles. For you westerners who do not speak Japanese, how shocked you would be to see even a licensed release is at times clearly misinterpreted for I guess sanitizing or political reasons. I've watched with english subtitles and had many a good laugh, and sometimes felt sick to my stomach.

That was funny anyway regardless of how it was meant. What I meant besides subtitles (the main point) is that I once got a licensed series as a gift labeled PG13 and the difference in every way from my 'real' Japanese version was staggering. And not the ecchi rubbish (I do not buy it) but even violent or horror content for one specific example. And no specials and few extras which can add everything to some series.
