The real question that should have been asked is why 589 marbles? That's some serious swallowing.

I had a teacher in Jr High who explained positives and negatives as a gang war. It was pretty funny and easy to understand.

"Mary was in a gangbang with 74 guys. If 32% of the men carried a STD, with a 4% chance of spreading, and she had sex with each men at least twice, what are her chances of contracting an STD?" Please express final answer in form of a percentage.

Also, I think it's better for children to know and understand death at an earlier age and before it's more glorified form from when you hacking people up with swords or mowing them down with guns in games. Japan seems to feel the same way given how a lot of kid shows, anime and live action, still deal with death and when it's often a main focus for an episode or story. Honestly I think that's the issue we have with kids right now in the states. Not the fact we have a lot of death in our media but with how casual we treat it.

Math is always violent. like:

8 Elephants jump from the cliff from a velocity of 86/kph and lands 10 seconds .. what is the height of the cliff?

FUCK? WHY DO ELEPHANTS BOTHER TO JUMP A FUCKING CLIFF!?

Death is something that shouldn't be hidden from reality, but at the same time something that a person grows to accept. Telling children about death will only result in them realizing their parents will die one day and might lead to depression later on. Never a good idea.

"John's father gave him 1359 marbles on his birthday. John swallowed 585 marbles and died. 9 of John's friends came for his funeral the next day. John's grieving father gave the remaining marbles to John's friends in equal numbers. How many marbles did each friend get?"

Its obvious the teacher was just killing two birds with one stone... Teaching third graders not to eat marbles and math at the same time.
