A previous poster mentioned they were good at math, and it got me thinking. Do all these grammar nazis remember all those algebraic formulas, scientific theories and laws, geographical locations? They devote much time agonizing and moaning over grammar mistakes yet I wonder how many of them are such experts in those fields. Isn't English a field of study? Does it matter especially on a forum full of teenagers, non-native English speakers, people who's English is not as good as their math, science, geography, etc? We all have our academic strengths and weaknesses. And I already believe that the English language is ridiculous to begin with. I can, and maybe one day will write a thesis on why I feel that English is a language made of error. So from what I am reading the why is because you feel like you can't take the person seriously? If you're an English Professor or an Editor than I can understand why it would "irk" you, but otherwise, really...why???? I think the reason depends on the person. For me, it just irks me when people don't use words correctly. The sentences stick out and just bug me. In other words, I don’t like it when things don’t flow. (I’m kind of obsessive that way-you should see the way I stack boxes. XD) But, in my case, I did say that I usually only correct my friends that I know in real life when they text me or send email. It's no use to do it online, since you do not know everyone's nationality and language. And on top of that, they’re my friends so they’re used to it, whereas people online tend to get mad at you for correcting them. And, for the record, I'm an English major. |

With you, I can understand it. And thank you for explaining it to me. I just feel that some people take it too far and are finding themselves less Grammar Nazi and more Cyber Bully. And an English major online. How does it not kill you???? I'm serious. Knowing your reasons behind it, it makes sense for it to drive you crazy ^_^ Why can't the rest of them be all tactful and reasonable like you? |

All I will say is:

If I can understand what the other person is trying to tell me then no it doesn't bother me. If however it is written as if it were in hyroglyphics or the grammar makes me uncertain on what I'm meant to be reading, then yes that does annoy me.

I do get annoyed a bit.. Occasional typos I'll overlook but if its constant, I'm gonna say something about it. IMO, how people type shows what kind of people they are. I won't talk to people who use qqqqqq instead of g.

Oh, I'm a major Grammar Nazi. I notice errors even in professionally written things. But on the Internet, people who speak correctly and go as far as to correct others on their English are seen as arrogant. I type properly at times, freely at others. I recognize that it's the same for everyone else. I ignore it in faith that they knew there were mistakes, and that any correction of their writing is unnecessary.

I only get annoyed if they keep doing it over and over and over but personally I don't care I just ignore them. I do correct people in my family though when I notice because its funny when look at me when they notice. Ha.

I don't mind it so much if it is once in a while. But if the person doesn't know the difference between "your" and "you're", it would bother me a whole lot more. http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/418123_317876464926235_175913989122484_789105_1193240412_n.jpg |

If grammar is a big deal to you, then I'd hate to see you react to real problems. Also, since when did "being ocd" become cool? It's a medical condition, quit being proud of it. Ignorant people who act like it's a superpower annoy me.
