I really hate it when some "Anime fans" tell you that your not a true fan till you watch a certain anime for example the following may have happened to you. " Your not a true anime fan unless you watch Dragonball Z, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Clannad, Death Note, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and the list goes on............ Surely if you support the release of the anime you watch, like purchasing the DVD's, Blu-rays and Subcription on Crunchyroll proves that you're a fan already by supporting the industry and if you enjoy watching them then who's right is it to deny you that you're not a "true fan" when you yourself know that you are as long as you watch Anime and support it and that is what makes you a true fan not the Anime you watch.

Well, I've never seen One Piece, Reborn, or D-Gray man before even though they are popular animes and I still consider myself an anime fan. It doesn't matter what animes you watch or not watch tbh.
For those who consider themselves true anime fan, people would spent time writing thoughtful reviews, purchasing DVDS (like the OP mentioned), and going to conventions etc. I'm not sure if I belong to that category yet but I enjoy animes and make discussion threads of animes that I've enjoyed. Hell, I'd buy the DVDs for collection and even consider rewatching animes from the "Big 3". I guess, "anime fan" is a term that holds a different definition depending from person to person.

I've been watching anime for over 30 year. I've never watched DBZ, Naruto, nor One Piece. If some moron claims that doesn't make me an anime fan, then I'll tell 'em to get off my lawn. |

It's more or less judging your "worth" as an anime fan by looking at the quality of the shows you watch. Don't get me wrong people can watch whatever they want to, but you'd be looked down on for watch (and liking probably) Naruto. But if you watched a show considered a classic like Cowboy BeBop you'd be ranked higher.
In my opinion if you consider yourself an anime fan there are some certain series you'd need to see, or at least see some of, considering yourself a "big" fan of anime. But that's just for the sake of judging other anime's quality. If you don't care about that then just watch what you want, but expect to be looked down on by other "big" anime fans if you have watched anything "classic".

lol just don't pay attention to those people. I'm actually a fan of those shows you mentioned but I would never make negative remarks to other people who don't really like dbz, bleach, etc. My advice?Just smile and walk the other way. There's no need to waste energy on those that talk down or belittle you. In addition, everyone has a different preference when it comes to certain things and that includes anime. As long as you like anime, even if just a a title or two, you ARE an anime fan. :-)

I think that's BS. I'd say an "anime fan" is someone with an appreciation of the medium in general, not just a specific series or movie.
