Yeah I agree and one thing that was a bummer to me. Was that one of my favourite anime Princess Lover!, the OVA was hentai and I was searching it up with my friends and tried watching not knowing it was. It was like OMG WTF, why!!!!!!!! Well, I guess you can never get rid of porn because I know god damn well that porn in the U.S. makes more money than Hollywood. True Fact.(not really, heard from my professor)
Edit: And in some countries too, porn makes more money compared to whatever.

As a previous poster said, every fandom has that type.

What I can say is that I remember the title that convinced me I was an "anime fan". I'd seen Dragonball: Curse of the Blood Rubies and liked it (then I tried the TV series and did not like it). I'd seen Cowboy Bebop and loved it. But both are just really good animated things. I'd also enjoyed stuff Disney had put out, and Fox animation, and MTV animation. All liking those made me was an animation fan (though a pretty particular one, since I won't watch the crap Nicktoons and Cartoon Network put out).

Then, one night, because I was bored and feeling adventurous, I put my roomate's Love Hina DVDs in... and sqee'd with inner delight. I'm pretty sure I also squee'd with outer delight. That's a bit of a genre switch from my previous titles (very safe action-adventure stuff), and I knew full well they don't make them like that out here. I also noticed stylistic similarities between all three titles that could only be accounted for by the fact that they were all Japanese animation.

That was the day I knew I was specifically an anime fan. It isn't about one specific title or another. It's about an enjoyment of anime generally, without genre restrictions.

I wouldn't think that you have to any specific anime to be considered an anime fan. However, I personally have many of those popular animes to thank for getting my once shallow self into anime.

Yes.

I hate DBZ, but I can appreciate its place in anime/manga as one of the most successful anime/manga in America.

Being a fan is overrated. Whether it's sports, anime, or any other amusing pastime, there are very few reasons to become fanatical over something so trite. Even with serious things like religion and politics, I can understand being a bit fanatic, but why limit yourself? Be critical of the things you support, and the things you don't. I would like to think that I'm not really a fan of anything, although there is quite a bit of anime out there that has made me excited, sad, angry, and generally emotional. I quite like much of anime, but am I fanatic about it? I don't see why everyone treats fanhood as some sort of badge of honor -- WHY DO YOU PEOPLE WANT TO BE ANIME FANS? I don't even care if you think anime changed your life, why support such a broad idea so carelessly? It just seems so reckless. I don't mean to troll so hard, but I can't think of an elegant way to put it. People that proudly call themselves "fans" are a slight bother to me. "Sports Fans" lie in the highest category of annoying fandom. Don't get me wrong -- I like sports, and I certainly don't mind people that like sports. I don't even mind if you're fanatic about a sport (I'm not convinced your fanaticism is in your control). Don't be so damn proud of it. It embarrasses me as a member of your species.

Edit: Sorry, I lost track of the question. If you don't watch a specific anime, are you not an anime fan? I watch any number of specific animes, and I'm not an anime fan. There fore, for all animes that I've seen, no.

Good for you? LOL I love it but I don't expect everyone who watches anime to love it as well. At least you tried it out for a few episodes and didn't just hate it because of the fans. :)

The idea that you are somehow not an anime fan because you don't watch certain series seems ridiculous to me. That being said, if you are my friend I might use the "You really don't love anime if you haven't seen Clannad and Cowboy Bebop." on someone ONLY to get them to watch it or at least try it out. I don't think I would ever use it seriously on someone ever ... especially a complete stranger.

I will say that you may want to give the series listed in the first post a try out because many of them I find enjoyable but even if you haven't seen any of them, if you enjoy anime you're probably an anime fan.

Hmm... well being that anime is on the fringe of society where I live, finding someone who is as crazy about anime as myself is quite exhilarating. Also, when you become a rabid fan you get to explore and see all the different parts of whatever your object of fandom may be. It also creates a sort of commrodery between the two of you. For ex: "We may have political and religious differences but damn do we both love Haruhi." Fandom for anime, like anything else, can be used for both good and evil. Will you choose to focus on the things you don't have in common concerning anime or be accepting of your differences? (that sentence was to remain on topic lol) I will say I am no saint. I have been known to be kinda imposing and fanatical when it comes to certain topics concerning anime but I do see where you are coming from with the whole "Fanaticism in general is bad". I just happen to disagree. When I see someone painted up at a Cowboys game (football), while I may say, "Man that guy looks stupid." another part of me is saying "I admire his courage and love for the team." IDK. I hope that made some sense to you.
